                    Lauretta’s Pov
My hand didn’t land on Cassie’s face because a hand held me. The hold was strong, possessive even, and blood stopped flowing in that area.
“Who the fu……” I tried to wriggle myself out of the hold, then took a glance at the face of the hand that held me.
The furiousness on my face instantly faded away and was replaced with a smile. “Sha…..aw…..n Hi baby.” I smiled even bigger, even though staying polite right now was the most difficult thing to do because of how tight his grip was on me.
I swallowed painfully at the glare he threw my way.
“What baby?” I almost jumped on my feet at the tone of his voice. Do I disgust him that much?
“Please let go of her, my son. She was only trying to defend herself against this pornstar.” my mom said, coming to a halt beside me.
“She is right, honey. She’s a fraud. You shouldn’t be with her.” I said with pleading eyes.
I took a glance at Cassie who stood opposite me. My anger increased seeing how confident she was. “You bitch! Shouldn’t you be ashamed of yourself and begging for mercy?”
I yelped in pain the moment I felt Shawn tighten his grip on me. “One more nasty word about her and I’m going to do to you what I’m never going to regret” He commanded.
I frowned. “You don’t even know her and yet you are protecting her..” I responded, trying so hard not to embarrass myself with my tears. His grip was killing me.
“Please baby, believe me. She’s nothing but a liar and a thief.”
Shawn scoffed. He took a step closer to me. I would have been excited about his gesture if he wasn’t mad at me but right now, his glares were making me scared as hell.
“One more terrible word and you would spend the rest of your life in jail.” No, this wasn’t a threat. Nothing hurt me more than the fact that he thought I was lying about my step-sister.
“Only one woman has the right to call me sweet names and it’s definitely not you so fuck off!!” He said, then finally let go of my hand. I couldn’t help with the tears that rushed to my eyes while I massaged my wrist to ease myself from the aches. I had no idea which hurt more, the pain in my hand or the words he said to me which caused my heart to ache. I don’t care if only one woman had the right to call him sweet names. But I hoped it wasn’t that witch!
Regardless of the pain I was feeling, I was relieved he let me go as people were slowly starting to stare.
Shawn joined Cassie where she stood and placed an arm possessively around her waist. She had the guts to lean into his hold, witch!
“Don’t be fooled by her act, Shawn. This woman here is of no good.” Mom pointed at Cassie. Her calmness worried me so much. It was almost as though she felt my mom and I were making a fool of ourselves. It hasn’t even been up to a month that mom sold her to that cripple and yet she has become so pompous.
“You shouldn’t have let go of her, Shawn. The silly guy who was flirting with Cassie earlier spoke as he came to a halt beside Shawn. “She needs to be taught a lesson. She and her crazy mother humiliated your wife while you were away.”
I had no idea what triggered me. The word ‘wife’ used or the fact that they were all trying to make me look stupid when in fact I had done no wrong.
“Look, I didn’t want to drag you into this but since you are being too blind to see the truth, then I’ve got no choice but to open up this way.”
“Sweetheart, please don’t say anything silly.” My mom pleaded but I shrugged her hand off my shoulder.
“Cut the act, Shawn! You are single as fuck! I know this party requires you to come with a partner but come on, you can do better than renting a whore for a fake wife just to belong.”
“A whore!” He reiterated.
“She’s married to a cripple. Didn’t she tell you that before taking on the job?” At this point, the hall was a bit lousy, people were talking loudly and there was soft music playing in the background. I could feel a few eyes on us but they probably couldn’t hear what we were discussing.
“That’s her father-in-law over there.” I pointed in my opposite direction at the man who prevented me from spilling a drink on Cassie earlier. If he had not interrupted, I would have been the one that Shawn would introduce to the world and not Cassie because I would have ruined her clothes.
He stood still, watching us while sipping on a glass of champagne. I scoffed in disbelief. There was no doubt that Cassie got her shitty confidence from him.
“And this asshole.” I pointed at the flirting man, “had his lips over Cassie’s mouth before you showed up on the stage.”
“Oh really?” Shawn mumbled. The tone in his voice revealed that he was mocking me. My heart bled in so much pain. What does that fucking bitch have that I don’t?
“What if I don’t have a problem with that?”
I scoffed. “Of course, you should. She’s not who you think she is.” I pointed at Cassie. “I am the one who should be by your side right now. I have always loved you afar and I deserve to be your woman. Not this lowlife who has slept with more men than you can ever imagi……..”
Hardly was I done with my words when a hand landed on my face. A resounding slap with a huge force that made me lose my balance. Before I knew it, I was on the floor, with my hand against my cheek. My fall caught the attention of everyone in the hall. All eyes were on me. It was quiet and even the music in the background stopped playing.
Tears welled up in my eyes. I had never been this embarrassed in my life.
Cassie!!!!
