                    Cassie’s Pov
“How dare you lay your filthy hands on my…….” My mother challenged, about to hit Cassie in the face but Cas held Rhoda’s hand halfway, stopping her before she even finished making her sentence. She pushed my mom and soon enough, my mother was on the floor beside me.
I was confused as to how she had the power to toss us away like we weighed nothing.
“Don’t you dare call me names in your life anymore!” Cassie warned, pointing at us as though we were some piece of shit.
“You all, don’t mind her, please.” My mom started to defend us because truly, the situation was embarrassing. Being treated like this before the cream of society means we were done for good. I brought my finger up to my face and wiped tears away from the corner of my eyes.
“She’s an ungrateful child. Ever since she lost her parents, I have been the one taking care of her and fending for her but just look at how she repaid me for all the love that I showered on her?” my mom sniffled. “I loved her even more than I love my biological daughter but she never even regarded me as her mother.”
“Her heart is filled with so much hate towards me and my child. She is always after our downfall. She stole her sister’s husband and only wants him for his money. She’s a witch. She’s not who you all think she is.” My mother pleaded.
“My love.” Shawn’s voice came through. He intertwined his hand with Cassie’s own and pulled her closer to him.
He initiated a long passionate kiss with her. The kind that got the crowd drooling.
The type of pain I felt was unbearable. It was as though my heart was stabbed into a million pieces. I had no idea when a tear rolled down my cheek.
“I have no idea how they got in here! Security!!!!” I recognised that voice to be Don Travous.
“I told you their dresses were fake. She is definitely the real gold digger.” Admits the loud mumbles, I clearly heard this statement from behind me.
“She bewitched him. That’s what she does for a living. Trust me, I’m her stepmother. I know her better than anyone.” My mom explained but no one was having it. The guests were throwing glares and judging looks our way.
Before we knew it, the guards approached us and shooed us away as though we meant nothing.
Cassie smiled in victory as she watched us being dragged out.
…………………….
The moment we were out, heavy tears started rolling down my cheeks. At this point, I didn’t care if my makeup was ruined.
“What the hell, Mom? What the hell?” I screamed, crying my eyes out, and letting out all of my bottled emotions.
“We lost to that bitch! We lost to that fucking debtor! We were disgraced in there. How are we supposed to walk on the streets with our heads up high? What if someone had recorded us and put the clip on the internet.”
“Are you seriously blaming me?” My mom said with creased brows.
“When all is well, you praise me but when something goes wrong, you instantly find who to put the blame on. I told you to take it easy in there but you reacted the wrong way. See where your lack of patience has landed us!”
I grumbled, shaking my head. “I had to say something. Cassie was making us look like fools. I couldn’t stand it. I couldn’t stand her bitchiness.” I responded, hoping my mom was going to understand.
“You should still have calmed down. You never listen to me!” Rhoda scolded.
“That’s now in the past, mama. What’s the way forward now? I sniffled. There’s no way I would allow that debtor to take away my man. Shawn is mine and it’s either me or no one else.”
Rhoda heaved a deep sigh. It was chilly out here and we were still standing right outside the hall.
“I’m still confused as to what is going on. Do you think Cassie’s husband sold Cassie to Shawn?”
I rolled my eyes in frustration. “How am I supposed to know, mama?”
“You need to stop being a brat because the only way we can get what we want is by first understanding what the hell is going on. We can’t make any plan based on assumptions.”
I knew my mom was right but the victory smirk on Cassie’s face while the guards dragged us out was messing with my brain. I needed to strike back and it had to be now.
I was almost saying something else when the door opened and Joel stepped out.
“Joel.” I ran towards him and instantly held his hand. “You came?” I sniffled.
“You are here to take us back in, right?” I stare at him with hopeful eyes. He was related to the celebrant so I knew he had the power to do so.
“My uncle is really mad at you. He doesn’t know you all. He is making investigations as to how you all got in.”
“Come on Joel, don’t tell me you believe that fake woman’s words over ours?”
“Shawn is respected by everyone, we know him so we will definitely believe his words over that of some stranger.”
“Sorry if that sounds rude but it’s the truth. We’ve known Shawn for years while none of us have seen you before.” Joel tried to take his hands out of my hold but I didn’t let him since he was our only hope right now.
“That woman is not his wife.” Mom intervened. I was tired of hearing that too. Cassie does not deserve all of the praise that she was getting.
“How do you know that?” Joel asked.
“Because she’s my step-daughter and I gave her hand in marriage to a crippled man. She and Shawn are definitely hiding something.”
“I think you are the one who’s confused. They are legally married. The property documents given to my uncle have their name in them as the Donors. Why in the hell would Shawn put that billion-dollar property in the name of a stranger if the marriage is fake?”
I was still struggling to understand what was going on when my mom’s voice came through in regret.
“Fuck!!! I think I was tricked!”
