                    Cassie’s POV
“You okay?” Tessa asked, bringing me out of my thoughts.
“Yeah, yeah!” I mumbled, trying to shrug off the itchy feeling in my eyes.
“You don’t seem as cheerful as you were. Did I say anything to offend you?”
“I’m sorry!” She added, looking guilty already.
“No, no, it’s fine. She doesn’t attend events anymore?” I reiterated.
Tessa nodded. “Stella used to be very outgoing. Always present at high-class events, but it changed when she got married. She wasn’t even at the company’s anniversary last month.”
I arched a brow at Tessa.
She smiled shyly. “I work at her Father’s company.”
“But you are cool. Very pretty and nice. I like you for Shawn. Even though I don’t really like him.” She said,
I don’t know if it was the tone of her voice or the distaste in her eyes when she spoke about not liking Shawn that made me chuckle. I think I was grateful for that as it eased my tension from what I saw earlier.
“Why?” I asked. “And here I was, thinking he had so many fans.”
“He does, and I can tell you for a fact that they love you so much because I’ve got a cousin as a fan. I admire his work ethic so much, and the success he has achieved is so mind-blowing. I met him when he came for a meeting at our office. I spilled coffee on him that day, and he almost got me fired despite how much I apologized.”
“Kelvin said Shawn was probably on his period that day.” She said, and I couldn’t help with the chuckle that escaped me.
“Was Kelvin also at the meeting?”
Tessa shook her head. “We met months later at a friend’s party. I was really reluctant, but here we are.”
“You are jovial, matching Kelvin’s personality. I’m happy for you both.”
I saw Tessa trying to hide her blush. “Thank you! I guess when you meet the one, you just know.”
“Same way you and Shawn wowed us. Donald couldn’t believe his eyes. Same with the rest of us. It feels so good seeing someone we’ve known to be so cold, displaying affection to the person who means a lot to him. Because of that, I’ll consider forgiving him.”
“What did I miss?” Kelv mumbled the moment he approached us. There was a waiter behind him who held a tray filled with various desserts. He served us, we thanked him, and he left.
Kelvin took a seat beside his girl.
“Nothing. Just telling how sweet she and her husband were .”
“Yeah! She’s the only one who has that power over Shawn. We are happy she’s an Elias! I’ve got the most gorgeous sister in law in the world.”
Tessa smiled at her man’s words.
She whispered something to Kelvin that got him chuckling.
“I’m definitely going to be the flyest uncle ever!” He mumbled at her.
I arched my brow at the duo.
“We know you and Shawn are going to make gorgeous babies,” Kelv said.
“Ohhhh!” I mumbled, trying to stop my cheeks from burning up.
“Well, I can say the same about you both.”
Kelvin and Tessa stared at each other for a second, then chuckled.
“You all don’t want to have kids in the future?” I asked, surprised at their reaction.
“Can’t say for later, but for now, we just want to have so much fun.”
I nodded slowly. If only Tessa and Kelvin were married already, then maybe Shawn wouldn’t be on my neck for a child.
“Shawn’s not back yet?” Kelvin asked.
“He must be so busy!” I mumbled, picking up the spoon before me, getting ready to dive into my dessert.
“You know it’s just business, right?” Kelvin stared at me intently.
I nodded, taking a scoop of the ice cream before me.
……………..
We engaged in more interesting conversations until I felt a familiar presence behind me.
He leaned over and placed a kiss on my cheek from behind.
My eyes got itchy with tears for a second as I smelled a perfume on him. It was a feminine scent mixed with his cologne. It wasn’t mine, so I knew it had to be hers.
Shawn occupied the space beside me. Hardly was he seated when Kelvin spoke. “Do you remember her?” He gestured towards Tessa.
“She looks familiar.”
“Nice to meet you.” He said to Tessa, who waved at him.
Shawn brought his hand up, placed it on my lap, and started caressing my thigh through my dress.
I took my right hand off the table and shrugged his hand off me.
Shawn stared at me with concern, but I ignored him, sipping on my drink.
“You okay?”
I said nothing, staring at the random guests at the party.
“Babe?” He called out in a whisper, placing his hand on my lap once more.
I rose to my feet.
“Where are you headed?” Shawn asked which was the right thing to do since I barely knew anywhere or anyone. I ignored my husband once more and started walking away. Tessa and Kelvin were so engrossed in their talks that they could hardly notice what was going on.
I took my leave. I had no idea where I was headed, but I knew I needed to be away from him. I swallowed painfully at the glances I received. Smiles and stares of admiration were thrown my way, unlike earlier when Shawn and I arrived.
That made me quite nervous, and I felt the urge to go back to the table. I was almost taking a U-turn when I sighted the ladies' room. I helped myself in, but nothing prepared me for who I saw.
Stella.
She was drying her hand by the sink.
She saw me before I could turn around. No, I wasn’t scared. I just disliked confrontations. Especially with people that I had no direct business with.
“Hey!” She voiced out as though she didn’t just throw herself at my husband.
Wait. Did she just smile at me?
Does that mean she recognises me to be Shawn’s wife?
Remembering I was here to clear my head and not to deal with another shit, I decided to focus on my business and get out of here.
The door to the second stall was empty and open. I was on my way there when Stella put a leg in my way. I didn’t see it on time, so I tripped, fell forward, and crashed against the door.
I felt a sharp pain on my wrist, which instantly made tears roll down my cheek, probably due to the fact that I landed forward against a non-stable door and had used my hand to hold my weight, which prevented me from landing on the floor.
I could also feel a burning sensation on my arm.
The last time I felt this much physical pain was when I was still with my stepmom.
“Sorry! I didn’t see you coming!” Yeah, an apology, but in a very mocking tone.
“I can’t believe Shawn would stoop so low to make a NOBODY his wife!” She spat, glaring at me.
“Well, you must be a retard to think that you could ever be a perfect wife for him!”
“I know Shawn more than anyone! I groomed him into being wild when making love,” She smirked at me as I wailed, my back rested against the door while I held on to my wrist. At this point, I had no idea which was more painful. The pain I was feeling or how she trashed me with her words.
“The point is, you would never be able to satisfy him. The other girls couldn’t, and I can bet you are just another failed story. Shawn doesn’t want a family. If he did, we would still be together. He’s not going to abandon his billion-dollar empire just to play the role of a doting husband to a woman that isn’t even up to his standard.”
“Don’t get too comfortable. He’s going to kick you out once you bear his Son.”
Stella picked up her purse from the counter. She gave me a final glare, then stormed out of the restroom.
With a very heavy heart, I managed to drag myself into the stall, and sat on the covered toilet seat.
I wailed but in silence because I didn’t want anyone to overhear me. I felt abused. Physically and emotionally.
I had no idea how long I sobbed for, but I heard the door of the rest-room open, followed by footsteps and a familiar voice.
“Cassie?”
“You in there?”
It was Tessa. I was about to respond to her, but my lips quivered, and instead, loud sobs escaped me.
“Cassie??” Tessa called out, coming close to the stall.
She opened the door, and her eyes went wide at my appearance.
She came in as fast as her legs could carry her and crouched before me.
“What happened? Shawn is worried sick about you! Your arm!” She gestured towards the bruise on my arm. “How did that happen?”
She looked down and noticed me holding my right wrist carefully. She tried to touch but I instantly pulled back.
“You sprained your wrist?”
“Please take me home!” I whispered in between my tears.
“Okay. Just wait here while I go get Shawn.”
“No!!!” I said before she rose to her feet.
“I don’t want to see him. Just take me home!” I pleaded.
