Shawn’s POV
I stared in confusion because all of this was just so hard to comprehend.
I shook my head. “We were cool, but when I came back to the table, she seemed pretty upset. Then she excused herself.”
“This is probably not the right time to say this, but I don’t think she was happy seeing you with your ex.” Kelvin voiced out.
I arched my brow. “You know it’s work, right? I would not have called Cassie to the stage and then gone running after another woman moments later.”
“I know! So it’s best to appoint someone else to take over your negotiations with her.” My younger brother advised.
“I’m sorry to interfere, but I don’t think this conversation is important. At least for now. As much as I would love to believe that she had an accident, I know it’s not. I have a feeling she was attacked, but she wouldn’t say anything to me. She just kept crying because she was in pain.” Kelvin’s Girl said.
I ran my fingers through my hair while letting out a very loud puff. Cassie had very soft and smooth skin. Very tender like that of a newborn. I knew this, and that was one of the reasons why I was always careful with her. My heart was very heavy. I feel terrible for not protecting her.
“And you didn’t see anyone when you got into the restroom?” I asked Tessa.
“No. No one was there.”
“Could it be her stepmother and sister?” Kelvin suggested.
“I’m not sure. They were thrown out, remember?” Tessa reminded.
“I know, but those people are dangerous. I think they are capable of anything.” Kelvin added.
“Only Cassie can tell us who it is. I wonder why the doctor is taking so long,” Tessa sighed.
“I swear I’m going to kill whoever is behind this!” I said with gritted teeth.
After what felt like forever, I raised my head and saw the family doctor walk down the stairs.
“Finally!” I mumbled in relief, making my way to the end of the stairs to wait for him. Kelvin and his girl followed suit.
“How is my wife?” I asked Eran the moment he got down from the last step. He was dressed in casual clothes but had a briefcase with him.
“She’s better.”
I sighed in relief.
“She sprained her wrist, and that caused a lot of pain to her. I’ve administered painkillers, treated the wrist as well as the bruise on her arm”
“She’s asleep, and I plead with you all not to disturb her.”
“We can’t talk to her tonight?” I asked out of curiosity since I wanted to kill the culprit already.
Eran shook his head. “If she wakes up on her own and decides to talk to you, that’s fine. But bear in mind that she needs to rest. It will help her heal fast.”
“You will be here to check on her in the morning, right?”
“Yes, I will be here as early as I can.”
“Do you think it was an accident or a push?” I asked, not caring if I sounded silly. Someone had to be held responsible for causing so much pain to my wife. The person has to pay tonight. There’s no way I’m going to go to bed with such a heavy heart.
“It could be any. Either way, force was applied that led to the injuries. It might take a while for her to completely heal, but she will be fine.”
“I have to head back to the hospital. I’ll see you tomorrow!” Dr Eran said after which he helped himself out.
“I’m glad she’s fine,” Tessa said in relief.
Kelvin took steps towards me, placed a hand on my shoulder, and gave it a light squeeze. “We will find out who is behind this. Leave that to me while you focus on your wife.”
I know Kelvin meant well, but I shrugged his hand off my shoulder. “This is all my fault.” I voiced out, then walked back to the couch area where I stood. Kelvin followed me.
“How?” He asked.
“She didn’t want to attend this party. I should have respected her decision instead of insisting. I feel so terrible right now. First, it was her fucking family who sneaked into party and now an unknown attacker.”
“Don’t be too hard on yourself.” My brother pleaded. “She’s your wife. It wouldn’t be proper if you left her at home. Despite her stepmom trying to ridicule her, you did the right thing by protecting her. And as for the culprit, I know we will find him or her. It’s sad it happened in the restroom where there is no CCTV.”
“Kelvin is right,” Tessa said. “Though your wife is a strong woman, I’m sure she needs you now more than anything in the world. So you need to let go of your anxiety and anger and just focus on her. Travous is aware of what happened. I’m sure he won’t let this slide.”
I heaved a deep sigh once more, tucking a hand in my pocket.
“I would have taken my leave the moment Eran left, but I don’t think I am comfortable doing that. You hardly give two fucks about people. I have never seen you this way.” Kelvin confessed.
He was right. I had no idea what was going on either. All I knew was that I was feeling a very deep pain in my heart. I felt like ripping someone’s head off as well.
“Just not happy with the way things turned out tonight. But I will be fine. You all are right. Cassie needs me more. Any other thing can come later. I should go to her.”
……………………….
After Kelvin and his babe left, I proceeded to the room. I gently pushed the door open and made my way to the bedside. Cassie was sleeping soundly. The makeup was off her face, but there were dried tears on her cheek. I arched my brow when I saw that she had changed into a lounge dress. I was almost getting jealous when I reminded myself that Tessa was here earlier and would have been the one to help her out of the elegant dress she had on.
I leaned close to Cassie and placed a soft kiss on her forehead. I was almost taking steps backward when I noticed the bandage wrap over her wrist.
I heaved a silent sigh. The thought of Cassie being in pain earlier and I was not even there to help her feel better made me feel like a dickhead and a failure.
I know I needed something to ease the ache I was feeling in my chest, so I made my way out of the room. I was almost by the bar when my phone buzzed in my pocket. I reached for it and it turned out to be my father.
“Yes, Dad,” I answered, approaching the bar. I reached for a glass cup while my other hand held my phone against my ear.
“How’s Cassie?” I could hear the worry in his voice.
“She’s asleep, but Eran assured me that she was going to get better soon.”
“That’s good news. Please take good care of her.”
“I had someone get me the footage of what went on outside the restroom. Stella was out of there shortly after your wife made her way in.
I frowned, putting the glass cup on the counter before me. “Stella?”
“Yeah, we had no idea what happened. But Stella was the only one there, then a couple of minutes after she left, Tessa went in.
“What the hell?!” I cursed. “Stella did that? But I never even introduced her to Cassie. How was she able to recognise her? I thought she arrived at the party after my speech?”
“Unfortunately, she left the party after you left, so I can’t confront her about it.”
“I will be on my way to her.” I placed the bottle of whiskey on the table and was almost moving away from where I stood when my father’s voice stopped me.
“No. Don’t go.”
“Come on, Dad, you do not expect her to disrespect my wife and go scott free.”
“Have you been able to talk to Cassie? To know if Stella is responsible?”
“Are you defending her because you are friends with her father?”
“No.” He answered almost immediately.
“Irrespective of whether she is guilty or not, you cannot leave your wife all alone to go confront Stella. You are a married man now, so there are just certain things you need to let go of. I don’t think Cassie would be happy to let you visit your ex late at night. It doesn't matter if you went there to fight for her. Take care of your home first, then revenge can come later. Cassie is your home.”
I hated to admit it, but my father was right.
