Shawn’s Pov
“I thought it was my secretary.” I mumbled.
“Your secretary? Don’t tell me you left your sick wife at home when you can clearly work from home.” Kelvin scolded.
I let go of the paper I was holding so I could focus on the call.
I said nothing.
“Come on, Shawn. What’s more important than your wife’s health?”
“I’m busy, Kelv. Why did you call?” I spoke, knowing I had no strength left in me to engage in any banter.
“Why are you this rigid? I called to ask how Cassie is doing. I thought you both were already getting along pretty well?”
“The pain has subsided, and I’m following up with the doctor. Doreen will keep an eye on her while I’m away.” I answered.
“That’s not the trait of a good husband. She needs you now more than ever.” Kelv pushed.
“No, she doesn’t,” I responded.
“Did she tell you that, or are you just making up stories for me so I can let you be?”
I heaved a deep sigh. “We are presently not on good terms, but that doesn’t mean I do not care about her. I’ve got people taking care of her and reporting to me.”
“I respect your decision, but at the same time, I know how hot-tempered you can get. It’s for better for worse, remember? You are her husband, so remember to always be the bigger person. She’s your baby regardless, and I hope you all clear up this misunderstanding real soon.” Kelvin pleaded.
“Hopefully,” I mumbled.
“So did she say anything about the accident?” My brother asked.
“It was Stella. She also said some silly things, too, that turned Cassie’s mind against me.”
“I thought she had two kids already? Why the hell is she trying to cause trouble? You had better tell Dad. You know he’s good friends with her father. So that he can tell him to warn his daughter.”
“No.” I interrupted. “I’m not bringing Daddy to this. I will handle it myself.”
“Shawn, please. I’m afraid you are going to do something crazy. Besides, I still think it’s a terrible idea to be with her alone. I don’t trust her. You can get revenge against her through a third party or, better still, reach out to her over the phone.”
“Thanks for your concern, but nothing is going to stop me from seeing her shortly. Her secretary informed me that she’s in a meeting. I can’t wait to give her a piece of my mind.”
“Do you want me to come with you?” I could hear the worry in Kelvin’s voice.
“I can handle her alone.”
“I know. But don’t do anything stupid.”
“Of course I will. She sprained my wife’s wrist and inflicted bruises on her. She has to get a taste of her own medicine.”
“Careful, Shawn. You know how biased the law can be towards women.”
“I don’t care. She has to know what it feels like to hurt someone so dear to me.” My eyes met with the portable clock on my desk, and I saw it was almost time. “I have to go, Kelv. Thank you for checking up on Cassie.”
……………………………..
“Shawn!” Stella’s eyes lit up with the moment I walked into her office. “Good to have you here. I almost couldn’t believe it when my secretary told me you were here.” Stella was comfortably seated on the chair behind her desk.
I made my way over to her.
The smile on her lips slowly faded and was replaced with worry. Probably due to the rage she saw in my eyes.
“What’s wrong?” She whispered. I would have missed that if my eyes weren’t on her and if I weren’t paying good attention.
Thankfully, Stella was putting on a collar shirt, so I grabbed her and pulled her against the wall, choking her.
She struggled to breathe. But I didn’t care. She tried taking my hand off her neck, but I didn’t let go. She was the first woman I was doing something like this to.
Seeing that she was starting to choke, I let go. But before I could take a step back, my mind flashed back to the dried tear stains I saw on Cassie’s face last night, and my hand landed really hard across Stella’s cheeks. She instantly placed her hand on that particular cheek and massaged it to ease the pain.
“What the hell?” She screamed as her eyes were instantly filled with tears.
At that point, it took all the strength in me not to move an inch from where I stood. I was prone to getting angry easily, and at the same time, I had never attacked a woman. I was careful not to do something that would make me feel disappointed with myself.
“How dare you lay a finger on my wife?” I said at the top of my voice, glaring at her.
“That liar! Is that what she told you? So you are treating me this way because of some poor fellow whom you picked up from the streets?” Stella spoke, trying so hard not to let those heavy tears fall.
I balled my hands into a fist. “Call her that once more and I give you my word that I’m not going to regret what I will do to you,” I said with gritted teeth, and for a minute, I saw fear flash across Stella’s eyes.
“You’ve changed so much because of her. Isn’t it fair that you listen to my side of the story?”
“I was finishing up in the bathroom when she walked in on me. She kept gawking at me, then she slipped. How is that my fault?”
I scoffed. “What do you take me for? A fool?”
“So you trust her more than me? Despite you knowing me your whole life?”
“Why am I going to trust you over my wife?”
Stella continued to stare at me in disbelief. Her hands were still against her cheek. “What the hell did she do to you? What has come over you? You were not even this possessive over me when we were together, and neither did you ever scold me or lay your hand on me. Your fucking wife is turning you into a beast. She’s evil!”
