Lauretta’s Pov
Tears clouded my eyes the moment my husband started to take steps towards the door. My lips moved to say something to stop him, but words failed me. Was that it? Was this the end? Did I just lose to my bitchy sister? No, this can’t be true.
My heart sank when the door came to a close before my very eyes. “What are we going to do, Mom? Is this going to be the end for us?” I said to my mom, who looked devastated as well.
“I….I…. We told him about all of her flaws, and he is still picking her over us?” I said in disbelief. I was about to say something when the door flung open. My little happiness was replaced with sadness and disappointment when two hefty guards approached us. Before my mom and I could say anything, they approached my mom and me and grabbed each of us by the arm.
“Let go!” I struggled with the guard that held onto me. He turned his deaf ears and pushed me out of the office. The other guard did the same with my mother. Once again, we received judgmental looks from people as we were thrown out of the building.
“Not only were we embarrassed, but our names have been struck out as eligible visitors. She ruined us, mama. It’s over for me. Where the hell am I supposed to get a man richer than Shawn fucking Elias.” I cried. At this point, I couldn’t hide my pain, and I didn’t even care if people were watching.
Rhoda closed the gap with me and held my shaky hand. “We will fight until we can fight no more. I know things are hard and confusing right now, but we are going to laugh in the end. I give you my word.”
I shook my head, not believing my reality. “She got it all. The daughter of a debtor won me. I can’t believe he still wants her after hearing that she can’t produce an heir.” I sniffled.
“I’m tempted to say she filled his head with lies. But he seemed to know some things about us, that’s why I was reluctant to challenge him. You heard him. He must have known about our affairs, that’s why he came disguised. You can see that all of this is not my fault. We were tricked. But I promise we will get to the root of this. Cassie’s parents are dead, the more reason why she should suffer. But I am alive and with you, so you are definitely going to get the best of what life has to offer.”
“I’m tired of being positive, mama. I just want my dreams to come through. I’m tired of waiting.” I sniffled.
Rhoda placed both hands on my shoulders. “It will. Delay isn’t denial. We will get to the root of this, Shawn will be yours and that bitch is going to regret taking what belonged to you in the first place.”
“Please don’t cry. The world is watching.” Mom whispered.
“Who cares? We lost already.” I brought a hand to my face and wiped tears off the corner of my eyes.
“It hurts me when you talk like this. You don’t have faith in me.”
“What are we going to do now?” I said in exhaustion.
“I will find out what Shawn and his father know and to what extent. I will try to get close to his father and seduce him if I can, so I can get information from him.”
I arched my brow at my mom. “You are not trying to sabotage me, are you?”
“Since I cannot tame the son, you are trying to tie yourself to his father.”
Rhoda scoffed and rolled her eyes in exhaustion. “For fucks sake, why would you even think about that? All of my life’s decisions were made with me putting you first, and you think I’m going to stab you in the back this way?”
The disappointment in her eyes made me start to feel ashamed of my statement.
“I’m sorry. I was just scared. You are the only one I’ve got, and I was just scared you were going to get tired and give up on me.”
Rhoda shook her head. “You’ve always been selfish, and that is why you are thinking this way. What do I gain if I seduce Donald? He’s got three kids already, and I’m sure he’s going to leave you with nothing if I pierce into his life as a mistress.”
“But if you are Shawn’s wife, you are going to be the mother of his kids. Do you know how much of an honor that is?”
“You know what? Now that you’ve mentioned it, I should probably force myself on Donald and leave you to your misery.” My mom was about to take her leave when I held her by her hand.
“I’m sorry. I will be positive and do whatever it is you want me to do.”
“You know I cannot stand you being mad at me. Please forgive me.” I pleaded.
Rhoda heaved a deep sigh. That was why I loved my mom. I was her weakness, so I knew she couldn’t stay mad at me for long.
“We need to pay that witch a visit!”
I frowned. “How? Shawn warned us not to go close to her, and I don’t think that was a threat.
“I know. But we have to. While we try to find out what Shawn has against us, we need to put her in her place.”
“How?” I frowned at my mom. “Do you think it’s possible to harm her without Shawn putting us behind bars? Please, Mom, I don’t think I’m going to survive that place.”
“We are not harming her. I can’t suggest something that silly. The best way to get through to her is through her emotions. Cassie suffers from low self-esteem. So anything we say is going to have an impact on her.”
“We need to remind her of how pathetic she is and how she would never fit in as Shawn’s wife. You know how much of a nervous wreck she can be when she is emotionally disturbed? We are going to use that to our advantage. Even if Shawn is unwilling to divorce her, he would have no choice but to let go since she’s usually a wreck when she’s blackmailed.” My mom said, and my lips curved into a beautiful smile.
