Kay’s POV
I knew my family wasn’t a perfect one. Before now, we were just three siblings who hardly got along with each other. Despite that; the thought of making an outsider a part of our family didn’t sit well with me.
I was indifferent when Dad told me Shawn got married. Cassie was a sweetheart and I’m grateful we have her here. Just one thing though. I hope Shawn doesn’t screw this.
I stared in confusion when Cassie covered her mouth with her hand. She got down from the bed and walked as fast as her legs could carry her into the adjoined bathroom.
I rose to my feet and went after Cassie. I could see the worry in Doreen’s eyes but I ignored her and made my way to the bathroom. I saw Cassie’s face buried in the toilet bowl, followed by the sound of her puking her guts out.
I froze for a second, trying to comprehend what was going on. Then I rushed outside the bathroom, bumping into Doreen. She had tossed the tray of food she was holding away and still had a worried look on her face.
“Go call the doctor and please take the food with you.” Doreen nodded after which I made my way back into the bathroom.
I approached Cassie as fast as my legs could carry me and knelt behind her, gently patting her back.
After what felt like forever, I helped her to her feet and cleaned her up, including the surroundings.
Even after I splashed water on her face, I could still see tears in her eyes. At this point, I started to get worried. If she was in pain, then it was probably not what I was thinking.
“Are you okay?” I asked Cassie while she leaned against the bathroom counter.
“I’ve asked Doreen to call the doctor. But is there anything I can do to make you feel better?”
Cassie shook her head as though she didn’t trust herself to say a word.
I passed her a towel, She wiped her face. I also passed her a toothbrush, she cleaned her mouth and we were out in no time.
My sister-in-law sat where she was previously seated and I placed a pillow behind her for comfort.
“Thank you.” She mumbled while I sat opposite her in return.
“You’ve got nothing to thank me for. I’m just confused as to what went wrong.” I mumbled and she began to look around.
“The food.” She mumbled.
“You want it? I’m so sorry, I had Doreen return it. I thought the aroma made your stomach churn.”
Cassie nodded. “That was embarrassing. I’m so sorry. And yes, It was the aroma. I don’t know what happened. It made me really nauseous.”
A sad smile crept to my lips, I leaned close and gave her hand a small squeeze. “You don’t have to thank me and nothing was embarrassing about that. I’m glad I’m present to be of help.”
“Have you ever felt this way?” I couldn’t help but ask. Yeah, I knew She and my brother were a couple but my thoughts were dying with excitement.
“Just a few times when I’m under the weather.”
“Ohhhh!” I mumbled, trying to hide my disappointment.
“It’s a bit crazy that so much is happening at the same time. I’m so sorry, but the doctor should be here soon.”
“I don’t think that’s necessary. Since he will be here to check up on me at night” She said and I shook my head.
“Your wellbeing is very important. You will be attended to whenever the need arises and you don’t have to make it seem like you are bugging anyone. As long as you are with us, we are going to take great care of you.”
“What did I do to deserve such?” She mumbled and I shrugged.
“You are Shawn’s wife. That makes you an Elias. You are my Dad’s first daughter-in-law. And just in case you don’t know, Shawn is his favorite kid and that makes you extremely special to him.”
I didn’t miss the small smile that crept to her lips, lightening the mood on her tired face.
“How’s that even possible? He looks at you all the same way.”
“Oh please!” I smiled. “Ignore that and trust my word. I’m not saying Donald doesn’t love us but Shawn is his favorite. I’m not sure if lots of people know I’m Donald’s daughter because I’m rarely seen with the family outside. Kelv isn’t that involved in business, so that leaves Shawn to it all. He’s got his companies and he’s actively involved in the family business. I do admire his work ethic but I don’t envy him.”
“Oh scrap that! The only thing I envy about him is you.”
She chuckled. “What is it about me?”
I shrugged. “I honestly don’t know. You think my family is nice and all, but the truth is that; it’s just you. You are warm, polite, kind, and sweet. That being said, I’m not trying to say that we are bitchy in my family but you just make it so easy for one to like you. It’s easy for someone with a genuine heart to identify you as a REAL one. No wonder why my brother is head over heels for you.”
I saw Cassie trying to hide her blush. “Thank you, but I don’t think I am all of that.”
“Of course, you won’t see yourself that way. That’s why I’m being honest with you.”
“I never cared about Shawn until you appeared. This is my second time in his home and all thanks to you. And it feels so good to see him care for somebody other than work. It makes me look forward to our Christmas event. Now that he has you, I hope he’s going to want to participate.”
“Christmas event?” She said with creased brows.
“Yeah! We’ve got a vacation home in different places. Last year was in the Bahamas. Kelv, Dad, Me, and a few cousins and aunts.”
“Shawn never participates?” She asked in shock.
“No. He’s always too busy. But now that you are here, let’s see if he is going to take it slow. I don’t know where we will be spending Christmas this year but I will let you know once it’s been decided.”
Cassie nodded.
“Finally, It’s my family’s responsibility to protect you even from your enemies in disguise.”
“Enemies in disguise?” She mumbled, looking a bit confused and that was when it hit me that I hadn't mentioned it to her.
“I met your stepmom and sister at the gate. They said a lot of demeaning stuff.”
