My heart raced at Kay’s statement. The look on her face changed to that of a furious one as she got lost in the memory of the encounter.
My eyes became itchy with tears. If it was Shawn or his father they confronted, I wouldn’t be bothered about anything. But it was Kay who had no idea of my past or my background.
“W…what demeaning stuff?” I stammered, staring at her intently.
She shook her head. “You are not well. I don’t think it’s wise to discuss stuff like that with you now.”
“No, It’s fine. I want to know all of it. I had no idea they knew Shawn’s home. I’m sorry for any inconvenience they caused.”
“You need to stop apologizing when you’ve done nothing wrong,” Kay warned. I swallowed painfully, not knowing what to say.
“I met them arguing with the guard because he didn’t let them in. She was all about you not being good enough for my brother and that Shawn was meant to marry your sister and not you.”
I looked away from Kay and stared at my lap.
“Sorry if that made you upset. That was why I didn’t want to say anything.”
“No, you don’t have to.” I looked into her eyes again.
“I was surprised that Shawn wanted me too. I thought he would go for Lauretta. She’s the prettier one and probably the better one. Since you are here, Maybe you can speak to your brother on my behalf. It’s not too late. He can divorce me and get married to her.”
Kay stared at me as though I had grown horns in my head. “Are you freaking serious right now?”
“I won’t joke about something so important. No one knows Rhoda and Lauretta more than me. They would do anything to get what they want. If Lauretta’s eyes are on Shawn, then I think it’s best that I let go. They were at the event last night and today, they’ve come to his home. They are not going to stop until they get what they want.”
“Okay, I understand you but I hope you don’t do this or say this before Shawn.”
“Why do you say so?” I asked, staring curiously knowing that I challenge Shawn almost every time.
“He doesn’t like to be challenged on his decisions. Shawn is no fool. Everyone close to him knows that and that is why for the most part, we trust his judgement so much. We thought he was never going to get married because of his very high standards. But then, he found you.”
“If Shawn says you are the best woman in the world, then so be it. I’m sure he has done his checks and every other necessary thing to decide that he wants you.”
“I know for sure that Shawn is fond of you and if you feel the same way about him, I see no reason why you should give up your happiness out of fear. Shawn hates himself already for what Stella did to you and I’m sure he wouldn’t allow such or something similar to repeat itself again.”
“You like my brother, don’t you?”
I stared at Kay for a couple of seconds, not knowing what to say.
“Why do you ask?” I whispered. If Kay wasn’t listening attentively, she would have probably missed my sentence.
“I wanna know if karma finally caught up with Shawn. That means, he finally finds a girl that he’s crazy about but she doesn't feel the same way about him. Plus, I feel if you love him, you would not even think about giving him up.”
“Or maybe, he’s not just doing enough as your husband. It’s going to be so painful if he loses you.”
I shook my head. I had no idea if I was in love with Shawn. All I knew was that he made me feel all of the emotions that I had never felt before. One minute, it felt as though we were each other’s best friends and that we had known each other for so long and another minute, it was as though we were our worst enemies.
“I don’t mean to sound ungrateful. I just got nervous. I know how terrible and dangerous Rhoda and Lauretta could be.”
“It seems Shawn is lacking in showing you how capable he could be. I give you my word that you can trust him. Your stepmom and sister are only going to try. They cannot take you away from your husband. Please have some more faith in yourself. Do not let anyone mess with your head. Not your stepfamily or any exes, including Stella. You deserve to be Mrs Shawn Elias.”
“Thank you for rooting for me. But did they say anything else?”
“Why? You think I’m going to see you any differently?” Kay asked.
I shrugged. “I can’t blame you if you do.”
“Your step-sister mentioned you’ve been married to different men. They said you cannot bear Shawn a child so he is just wasting his time being with you.”
My heart fell. “After hearing all of that, you still helped me in the bathroom?”
“Okay. We need to make certain things clear.” Kayla was saying, and then she sighed. “I don’t know how you see yourself but the truth is that none of us are perfect. This is life, we can’t be too careful; mistakes are bound to be made and the only thing we can do is to learn from them.”
“Shawn’s not perfect and neither am I. I’m sure there’s nothing they told me that he has no idea of. If your husband loves you for who you are, then who am I to interfere? No one has the right to call you a barren. God is the one who gives babies. I believe in destinies, I also believe that those who have good hearts will definitely get their rewards.”
“You and Shawn are definitely going to have kids and they are going to be perfect and raised with so much love,” Kay said confidently.
I burst into tears where I was seated.
