Cassie’s Pov.
From the corner of my teary blurry eyes, I could see Kay’s expression turn to that of worry as she stared at me.
I had no idea why I was tearing up too. I brought my other hand to my face and wiped tears off the corner of my eyes while my sprained hand stayed glued to the bed.
I sniffled.
“Did I say anything to upset you? I’m sorry, Please don’t cry.”
I shook my head, finding the courage to speak. “You are so polite and you speak with so much faith. I don’t see myself the way you see me. I’m not used to people attaching my name or personality with something so honorable.”
I saw a sad smile creep to Kay’s lips. “Shawn and I may not have many memories of doing things together as siblings but I respect him so much even from afar. I know he could be an asshole sometimes but I keep tabs on my siblings and I would be lying if I said I wasn’t proud of him. I respect him so much and I feel the same way about you.”
“I am saying this to you not because you are my brother’s wife but because you earned it.”
“And all that I said, I didn’t just say them to make you feel better. I said them because it’s the truth. “I don’t mean to pry but I’m excited to be an aunt.”
I swallowed painfully at her words.
“No pressure! You all can take your time, but I’m just letting you know what my heart desires.”
“I don’t know,” I mumbled, still unsure of what to say. Shawn wants a baby but I don't think I’m ready for that. I could hardly protect myself from his ex. How the hell was I supposed to care for a tiny human?
“How can I tell if I’m barren?” I found myself whispering.
Kay stared at me carefully. “Don’t let their words get to you.”
“I will try but I just want to know.”
Kay shrugged. “I guess when you are trying and it’s not forthcoming.”
I heaved a deep sigh.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t be talking about this.”
“No, it’s fine. I just got worried for a moment. Living in the same house with them, they’ve always said things that came to pass. So I was wondering.”
“Did they ever talk about you marrying a billionaire?” Kay asked.
I shook my head slowly. “Bu……”
Kay shook her head, stopping me from completing my statement. “They only said that so we could throw you out of this house.”
“As I said earlier, Children are gifts from the almighty. Your stepmom and sister have no right to declare anyone barren. Who knows if your step-sister is capable of birthing a baby?”
I shrugged. “I have no idea.”
“See! Then what makes you think you are what they say you are?” Kay challenged, her words piercing deep into my heart.
“It’s not intentional. Because of my late Dad, I’ve always done whatever they told me to do. Folks believed them over me so I guess their words do have power over me.”
“Seems like you had it rough living with them,” Kay said and I could feel my eyes get itchy with tears all over again. This was exactly why Shawn and I were not on good terms. He was tired of me thinking so low of myself. I want my confidence back but I don’t even know how to.”
Kay gave my hand a light squeeze once more, bringing me out of my thoughts. “You are finding it hard to believe that all of this is real right? You being Shawn’s wife and being a part of this family?” She asked and I nodded.
“If you lose all of this today, won’t you regret not making the most of your life when you had it all?”
I let out a small sigh but something weird happened. I felt a pain in my heart. The thought of not seeing Shawn again. Who am I going to fight with? Who was going to take care of me? Who would make love me like he does? We hadn’t even explored the red room yet.
“I don’t mean to scare you but you really need to start living. Time waits for no one and don’t let all of these pass you by.”
“I will try. Thank you.”
Kay nodded, with a small smile plastered on her lips. “Do you feel better now? I wonder why the doctor isn’t here yet. I will let Shawn kno…..”
“No please.” I interrupted.
Kay arched a confused brow at me.
“You don’t have to tell him anything. It was just a stomach upset. I’m fine now.”
“Are you sure?” She asked; not looking convinced.
I nodded.
“It’s okay if the doctor cannot make it now. He is still going to check up on me tonight anyway and I don’t want to trouble Shawn. Lately, it’s been about me. He’s at work and I just want to let him know that I can take care of myself.”
“I hope you are not thinking you are a burden to him?”
“Am I not? I don’t know if my stepmom and stepsister are still out there, making trouble. They did the same yesterday, causing unnecessary attention for Shawn. I don’t know but I think the guards would have informed Shawn of their presence.”
“You just confirmed my statement but No, you are not a burden to him. And in his absence, it is my duty to make sure you are fine. And No, I don’t think they are still there, except that they want to be arrested.”
I heaved a deep sigh and that helped in pushing my tears back behind my eyes. “Thank you for your kind heart towards me.”
“Stop! You don’t have to.”
I shook my head. “I have to.”
“You’ve got every reason to treat me like trash but you are the sweetest feminine figure I’ve had in my life. I wasn’t sure I knew what I was doing when I signed the marriage papers but you and Kev's love towards me makes me think it’s all worth it.”
“Makes you think?” Kay said with a small smile on her face.
“Stop making me blush.” I chuckled, sniffling at the same time.
“No, we all love it when you smile. You should see Shawn’s gallery. You would think it’s your phone.”
My eyes went wide. “What???!”
