I stared at Shawn intently, not wanting to miss his reaction.
After being silent for almost a minute, he spoke. “It depends and why did you say so?”
“Depends on what?” I reiterated.
“Your statement confuses me. You said what if you are unable to give me a child. Does that mean you have agreed to start a family with me?” I could see the hope in his eyes and that made me roll my eyes instantly.
“At this point, we’ve got to be sincere with each other so we know where we are headed.” He spoke, bringing me out of my thoughts.
“You do not need to pretend as though you do not know what I’m talking about. My step-family said so to your sister, I have no doubt they mentioned the same to you.”
“They did,” Shawn answered, making my heart race.
“And you are not disgusted?”
He arched his brow. “Why should I be?”
I scoffed. “I don’t know how you met me or heard about me but are you aware that I’ve been married before.”
“Does it matter?”
“It doesn’t bother you?” It was my turn to frown.
“I have a past as well just in case you’ve forgotten. One of which is the reason why you are still mad at me. Life happens and we’ve all done crazy things. Some of which I’m proud of and some of which I am not proud of. So I’ve got no right to judge you for past experiences.”
“You are mine now so no one dares to mess with you.”
I swallowed painfully, trying not to get lost in his words. “What if they are right?”
“About you being barren?” I saw fear linger in Shawn’s eyes for a while before he masked it up.
“They confirmed you’ve been with different men and done things that affected your womb but I didn’t think it was true.”
Even though this was a lie, I was torn between going with the flow of his statement or debunking the truth. Should I debunk it, then maybe he would finally give up on me, divorce me, and find himself another wife. But the thought of Shawn touching and fucking another woman like the way he does to me was making me really crazy. I hated him but at the same time, it was so difficult to let go.
And going with the flow meant that I had indirectly consented to carrying his heir. I had no idea why that didn’t sit well with me. Maybe because I couldn’t see myself yet being a mother. Besides, I had no idea if Shawn and I would be good partners when it came to parenting. We fight and argue lots of times soooo.
“Did a doctor's report prove it?” His voice brought me out of my trance.
“What?”
“I want to know if any of what Rhoda said is backed up by any medical evidence.”
I shrugged, still not knowing how to attack the situation.
“I’m your husband so you need to open up to me.”
“Please.” He added while staring at me intently.
“I don’t know what you are talking about.”
“Have you ever gotten pregnant? Did you ever get rid of a child?”
One of the things I hated about Shawn was his bluntness.
Remembering lying at first instance would lead to more lies being told, I decided to play safe.
I shook my head.
In a fash, Shawn moved closer to me. He brought both hands to my cheeks, caressed them, and looked deep into my eyes.
“For real?” He mumbled. Not only could I see the relief in his eyes. I could also hear it in his voice.
“No! They were more concerned about using me as a debt repayment. You are the only one who has made love to me and has refused to give me any sort of after pills.”
Shawn heaved a deep sigh, then rested his forehead against mine. “Those bastards scared me.”
“You shouldn’t rejoice yet. What if they are right?” I voiced out.
Shawn pulled away from me. “But you just confirmed you never got pregnant or got rid of any baby.”
I shrugged. “Yes, I haven’t. But the words of my step-mom and my step-sister always find a way of coming through.”
“I don’t know how but they always do. I mean, what if I can’t have kids?”
“I understand how important this topic is to you. You’ve got large investments and you need an heir to oversee it all but would you rather place all your bets on me?”
“I don’t know what’s going on in your head but I do not see you as a babymaker.”
“I didn’t make you my wife just so you could bear me kids and I would divorce you after. I am making this clear just in case that is where you are heading at.”
“Your response made me relieved because I don’t want to imagine that you have gone through something very traumatizing.”
“I don’t want you to lose out all because you chose to be with me. You can always let go.” I warned.
“I’ll pretend as though I didn’t get that. I know what I want regardless of what anyone says.”
“Thank you for opening up to me. Yes, I don’t deny that it’s my desire to have kids who would take over all that I’ve worked for. But that doesn’t mean that you are any less important.”
“This conversation seems to put you on the edge. Maybe we should talk about something else.”
“Yes, please!” I voiced out as I was starting to feel nauseous.
“So what’s going to happen now? I know Rhoda and her daughter wouldn’t stop at anything to get you. I know I’m speaking like a coward, but I’m just talking from experience.”
“I have them followed and I’m in talks with my lawyer. You are safe as long as you are with me.”
I nodded slowly even though it felt really foreign to have someone care for me and assure me of my safety.
“Eran gave me updates on your episode this afternoon. He didn’t say much though. He just told me to keep an eye on you for any further symptoms and if we notice anything weird, we might have to run a test on you.”
“You’ve been sore and really sensitive lately. We should probably discuss that with him”
My eyes went wide.
