“I would be careful with my speech if I were you. You are aware of the crazy checks we passed through before we came in here. I wouldn’t be shocked if they had cameras everywhere with microphones. We were thrown out of Shawn’s company, the same shouldn’t repeat itself.”
“I know you’ve got so many doubts and questions but please try to remain calm. We will discuss when we are out of here but please let’s just focus on what we are here for.” Mom whispered to me.
Even though I still had so much to rant about, I knew she was right.
“I know things suck but only the fittest survives challenges. We are not going to give up until we get what we deserve.”
I slowly nodded at my mom’s words. “I hope Donald would be much calmer than his son.”
“I think he is. He is calm and likewise, a pretender.” Mom whispered.
“What they did was absurd. If it were to be someone like us who did that to him, I’m sure we would be in jail right now, paying for our sins. But unfortunately, we cannot do the same to them.” I explained.
“That shows how unfair life can be, my love.”
I scoffed. “They are already letting us wait too long. I wanna see his damn face.”
As if my cries were heard, a lady in corporate attire and matching heels approached us. “Mr Elias will see you shortly in the visitor’s room. Please come with me.”
Mom rose to her feet and I did the same.
“Visitors room? In an office setting?” Mom whispered for me to stay quiet and I obeyed.
In no time we came to a halt in front of a door. The lady who I think was one of the receptionists opened the door and ushered us in.
Mom thanked her as we made our way in. The meeting room was similar to a lounge area. The only difference was that it was enclosed. Once again, my mom and I occupied the double couch.
“Would you like me to get you anything while you wait? Water? Te….?”
“No, it’s fine, thank you.” Mom interrupted before she could even complete her statement.
The lady bowed, then took her leave.
I scoffed the moment the door came to a close.
“You seem really cranky today?” Mom said to me.
I shrugged. “I can’t promise that it’s going to get better, until the world gives me what I truly want,” I grumbled.
Rhoda was about to say something when the door flung open and a familiar face came into view.
Donald was just a step away from the door when he stopped in his tracks. “What are you both doing here?” He stared at my mom and me as though we had horns in our heads.
My mom instantly rose to her feet. I wouldn’t blame her because Donald seemed like someone who was going to call the attention of the security to throw us out anytime from now.”
“We are in-laws, Donald.” I wonder what Mom was thinking by starting a conversation with that statement.
“What are you both doing here and how did you even…..”
“We booked the appointments with our middle names. That’s probably why you didn’t detect. Sorry if this has caused any inconvenience. If it isn’t important, then we wouldn’t be here.”
Donald didn’t look convinced.
“What do you all want? Don’t you feel embarrassed enough at the event?”
“Well, if you are here to talk about Cassie, then you are at the wrong place.”
“Why do you all trust her so damn much as though you know her better than we do?” I stormed to my feet, approaching my mom. She was just a few steps away from Donald.
“Sorry?” Donald stared at me with creased brows.
“Please ignore her. We are just here to talk to you and we promise not to take too much of your time.” My mom pleaded. She was almost taking steps towards Donald when he stopped her with his glares. “You moving away from there means you are going straight out of this office. If you’ve got any other motive apart from that; then do not come close to me.” He warned.
My mom swallowed painfully. “How about we all take a seat so we can talk?”
“About what?” Donald asked as though he had no idea why we were here.”
“Come on, Donald, are you going to turn blind eyes to the fact that your son is with the wrong woman?”
“If that’s the case then why are you worried on behalf of my family?”
Mom was about to defend us when he interrupted. “And don’t think I’m going to stand here and watch you guys speak silly about my daughter-in-law.”
“You all still wanna keep her even after the world knows she’s the daughter of a debtor?” I couldn’t help but interfere, ignoring the warnings my mom had given earlier. “Where’s the reputation and dignity of this family?” I completed my last statement, throwing my hands in the air.
Donald folded his arms and stared in between my mother and me. “Where is this conversation heading to? For you to be here I am sure you all saw the broadcast. Shawn made it clear that whoever wanted to separate him from his wife would be waiting forever. Did you both miss that part?”
I was about to say something but mom beat me to it. “You can’t keep turning a blind eye to an obvious situation. Cassie isn’t worthy of your son. It sucks that you are here defending her when I can bet that she collided with his ex to ruin him.”
“Shawn has dated so many women in the past. Why did this public disgrace have to occur when Cassie is present in his life?”
“Besides, you and your son tricked me and you don’t even feel sorry about it. My daughter is here to take her rightful place and that is to be Shawn’s wife.”
“Feel sorry? After you lied that you had only one daughter, Cassie!”
“Oh please, stop being silly, Donald. If you had told me who you were, then I would have done the right thing. Shawn is being ignorant about this and so are you. You should be calling him back to his senses and not supporting him.”
“How do I make this clear to you?” Donald said, then paused for a while, probably searching for the right words to use. “My son knew who he wanted as his soulmate before we approached you. And we know you both are doing everything right now to tear Shawn and Cassie apart.”
My eyes went wide.
“The only reason you both are not in jail right now, especially after that terrible scene you caused at Travous's party is because Cassie pleaded that you both be left alone.”
“She did?” Mom uttered in disbelief and at the same time, trying to hide her anger.
I scoffed, “So what is she feeling like? An angel? A fucking goddess?”
“We don’t care but as far as I know, Cassie is whoever the fuck she thinks she is.” Donlad defended.
“I’m aware that you both have approached my son and my daughter to speak evil about my daughter-in-law. Silence from us doesn’t mean we are fools. We are only keeping calm for Cassie’s sake.” Donald said, then turned his eyes to me. “You were questioning the dignity of this family. It’s crazy because you all don’t even have any to begin with.”
“You don’t even know us to say such. We are here to protect you but you are making us look like bad people.” I said with a heavy breath, trying to stop my eyes from itching with tears.
“Your trick is not going to work on me. It’s crazy how you think you both can come in here with your ridiculous outfits to seduce me and I’m going to listen.”
Mom stared down at her outfit in shame while I scoffed. Her dress was extremely tight, short and her cleavage was quite exposed. I, on the other hand, was in my signature two piece. Something my followers would die to see me wear. But If I was being honest, my mom and I looked a bit decent compared to the outfits we would have worn.
“How else should we look when coming to see our in-law?” Mom voiced out.
“In-law? Your daughter is not my son’s wife so I am not related to you.”
Nothing prepared me for the pain I felt in my heart.
“Or do you now want to claim to be Cassie’s mother after speaking bad about her?” He challenged my mother after seeing the reactions on our faces.
“You don’t know this woman you are defending, Donald. It seems that she has told you so many lies to make us look like bad people. Cassie is a fucking gold digger” My mom said at the top of her voice even though I knew she didn’t intend to.
“It doesn’t matter if she’s genuine or a gold digger. My son loves her and whether you like it or not, She’s the first daughter-in-law of this family and she wouldn’t be disrespected. Especially by you all.”
Hardly had Donald completed his statement when two guards appeared in the room.
“Mom, do something.” I sniffled, knowing this was our last chance to fight for whatever was left.
