                    Cassie’s POV.
This was the first time I was sobbing about this issue, and I got some sort of comfort from a fellow human. One would have thought the pain should be less because this was what I used to wish for, having someone to cry together and share this pain with or generally just someone to hold my hands and let me know that everything was going to be fine.
Rather, I felt even more ache in my heart. My position on Shawn’s body just reminded me of how pathetic my life has been, and so many issues I have had to deal with and figure out on my own.
I cried for a long time against Shawn’s chest. This might probably be the last time we would be in this bodily position, so I might as well want to savor the moment as much as I can.
I had no idea how long I cried for, but I only pulled away from Shawn’s chest when I had no more tears left to shed.
Shawn brought his hands to my face and wiped my tears away with his thumb while I sniffled.
“I never left my mother’s side after the accident except for days I went to clean up and beg people for money. I was positive all through, but it got to a point that my heart couldn’t take it anymore. I watched her tear up in pain, and I started to feel bad for always encouraging her to fight for her life while I found a means to gather the money. On most days, we spent hours crying together.”
“Even though I prayed as though my life depended on it, at some point I started to lose hope. Then I had just one wish. To spend my birthday with my mom, do the stuff she loved. We promised each other we were going to be happy on that day and fight every pain together.”
“But the situation got worse the afternoon before my birthday. The doctor informed me that I was going to lose her if she didn’t get the surgery done in a few hours. I promised my Mom to stay strong for me and that I was going to be back with the money.” At this point, my eyes were too tired to even shed any more tears, but the pain in my heart didn’t get any better. I continued to stare at Shawn with a blank expression as I spoke. I could feel his hand gently caressing mine.
“I had no choice but to go back to my Dad’s friends and surrender myself.” I puffed out, not knowing where or how to begin that part of the story.
Shawn’s hands were still caressing mine. “No need to force yourself if you don’t feel like talking about it,” Shawn assured me, but it didn’t make sense to stop at this point when I’ve come this far. Besides, I was willing to let this all out, so if he was going to get disgusted by me and divorce me, then he should do that right now.
“I returned to my father’s friends to take up their offer. Of course, they ridiculed me first. They made me lick their shoes, they hit me, even before they began touching me.”
I was seated on Shawn’s lap so I could feel his raspy breath.
My lips quivered for a few seconds. “It was terrible, one of the darkest moments of my life. They touch me in the worst and cruellest manner. I was glad they didn’t put their cock in me, but they forced me to suck.”
“I’m going to find them and make sure they pay,” Shawn said with gritted teeth. Inasmuch as it was heartwarming to come across someone who was ready to fight for me, his statement almost did not move me. Maybe that was because nothing could bring back my sweet mom.
“I was refusing some of their demeaning behaviour, and they threatened they weren’t going to give me the money if I kept that up, so I had to comply to the best of my ability.”
“After what felt like forever, the traumatising moment came to an end, and it was time for them to pay me. I was only given a check worth 30 per cent of the surgery cost.”
“30%????” Shawn said in disgust.
“I wept even more than how I did when they touched me. I tried challenging them, but they mocked me even more, telling me how useless I was and that if not for the fact that they pitied my mom’s condition, they wouldn’t be giving me a dime. I felt used. I felt broken, I felt dirty, I hated the world, but I hated myself even more.”
“I decided to beg my father’s friends to at least make it up to 50%. With that amount, I was sure I could get the hospital to start the surgery, but they refused and threatened to collect the 30% check if I did not take my leave.”
Shawn scoffed in disbelief.
“I had no choice but to obey, and I remember them cussing me and my mother on my way out.”
“I remember not being able to walk well for the rest of that day.” I sniffled.
“I got to the hospital and headed over to the reception to hand over the money and plead with them to get started. I felt they should consider it because 30% was better than nothing. But I was given the worst news. My fears finally came to pass before my eyes.”
“The doctor approached me; he praised me for being there on time, then broke the news that my mom only has a few minutes left and would like to have a word with me.”
At this point, I released my hand from Shawn and fiddled with my fingers as I continued to recollect the past.
“I refused to accept the news. I remember pleading with the doctor that I had gotten some money and that they could start the surgery. He told me that nothing could be done and I should go speak to my mom with the few minutes she had left.”
