“I had seen my mom in pain for days, but none could compare with the kind of pain I saw her in that moment. We held hands and cried together. I told her to forgive me as I could only raise 30% of the money. She warned me that it wasn’t my fault, but of course, I didn’t believe that. She had just me to rely on, and I failed her.”
I thought I was done crying, but at this point, the tears started flowing freely down my cheeks. Shawn wiped them off with his thumb, but it was as though he was wasting his time because the more he wiped off tears from my eyes, the more tears rolled down my cheeks.
“I never knew my mom to be a very religious person, but she spent her last minutes praying for me. She prayed for me to be happy, to live a good life, and be with a good man who was going to take great care of me, unlike my father, who made false promises to her that he couldn’t keep up with it.”
“At that point, Rhoda was just his mistress, but my mom knew they were going to get married after she was gone. Despite all she went through, she made me promise her that I wasn’t going to disrespect my Dad, Rhoda, or Lauretta, and neither would I try to seek revenge for her death.”
“That’s why I oppose you every time you decide to attack them.” I looked into Shawn’s eyes, then continued speaking. “I don’t know what I was thinking, but I agreed to everything she said. She told me not to fear and that she would keep watching over me. Since she knew I would be staying in my father’s home and wouldn’t have anywhere else to go, she told me to be obedient to my father and, of course, to Rhoda. That’s why I’ve always done all that they’ve asked of me since I didn’t want to end up in the streets.”
“We spoke some more until the pain took over. There was a loud scream, and I saw her take her last breath.” I sobbed as I came to the end of my story.
I brought my hands up and wiped tears off my face with the back of my palm. “It’s okay if you want nothing to do with me anymore, but you and your family have been kind to me, so sometimes, when I act bitchy, it’s not that I’m sour. Life has just been so unfair in so many ways that it makes me question my existence.”
“I don’t like the way Rhoda and her daughter treat me, but I still haven’t gotten the balls to stand against them. I always do everything they command in the hope that one day they would see the good in me, show me love, but up to date, all they feel is hate towards me.”
“I cried myself to bed all my life, missing my mom and hoping I don’t die soon. I won’t lie that I wished for death at some point because the thought of going to see my mom in heaven made me feel much calmer than being a slave to Rhoda and her daughter. The torture got even worse when my father died and I had to marry different men just so the debt could be off Rhoda’s name.”
“I’m not used to all of these that I’m experiencing with you. When you buy me jewelry that costs so much, it brings back the horrible memories of when I literally begged everyone I knew for money to save my mother. I’m filled with guilt that sometimes I don’t know what to say or if I deserve all of this. I wish I knew you then. If I did, my mama would still be with me, and I wouldn’t have to go through so much cruel stuff.”
“This is very thoughtful of you.” I gestured towards the cake and the gifts. “The last time I had a celebration was when my mom was alive. No one cared, and I wasn’t freaked out about it either because of the painful memories that surrounded the date.”
“Thank you for trying, but I don’t think I’m worth all of this.”
“You now know of my dark secret, so it’s fine if you want nothing to do with me. I will stay out of your way while we are here. And when we get back home, we can proceed with the divorce, and we will go our separate ways.” I said with a heavy heart. I’ve received so much care staying with Shawn and his family, and the thought of leaving felt like leaving a part of me behind.
Since Shawn said nothing, I decided to help myself up from his lap, but he pulled me back by my arm, staring into my eyes intently. “Where the hell do you think you are going?” He said sternly.
My lips quivered before words finally came through. “To give you some space.”
“Who said I need space?” He asked, causing me to arch my brows.
“I want to meet her?” My husband said, Well, he still was; even though I knew the title was going to disappear real soon.
“Meet her?”
“Your Mom.” He clarified.
“Were you listening to all that I said at all?” I couldn’t help but ask.
“You recall where she was buried, don’t you?”
I nodded slowly, even though I wasn’t sure where Shawn was headed with this conversation.
“Good. You will take me to her when we get back home.”
“Why?” I asked again. A part of me was starting to get nervous that he didn’t believe all that I said.
“You don’t want your Mom to meet your husband?” He asked, staring into my eyes intently. I continued to stare in confusion, probably because I wasn’t expecting this kind of response from him.
“I can ask my Dad and siblings to come with me if you want, so she can meet the whole family.”
“Why?” I asked because Mom was dead already, so why was he this bothered when no opinion could be passed across?
Once again, Shawn took me out of the blue by wrapping his arms possessively around my waist. “It’s only proper that I introduce myself to her. I need to let her know of my intentions towards you and, most importantly, that her prayer for you to have a good man eventually came to pass. And now that you have me, she can now rest peacefully while I do the hard work in ensuring that you have a peaceful, happy and beautiful life.”
