Cassie’s POV
“Don’t you think all of this is too much?” I mumbled.
Shawn shook his head immediately. “I’ve got only one life to live. If I don’t spoil my woman, no one is going to do it for me.”
“Besides, seeing you happy makes me happy. It’s your birthday, but I’m the excited one.”
“I’m excited too, don’t get me wrong. I just feel overwhelmed. A little bit.”
“You are not overwhelmed. You are just shy.”
I nudged Shawn, making him chuckle.
“I will make a wish first.”
Shawn nodded. He let go of my arm and picked up the lighter just right beside the cake. He lit the candle and let me do my thing. I smiled as I moved my face closer to the cake. I stared at the light for a few seconds, wondering what I was going to wish for. It has been forever since I did this, that I almost do not remember how it is done or what was usually wished for.
I eventually shut my eyes for a couple of seconds and made my wish. I opened my eyes, then blew out the candle.
“Happy birthday, sweets!” Shawn whispered behind me, placing a kiss on my earlobe.
“What did you wish for?”
I chuckled, facing him. “Isn’t that meant to be private?”
“It is, but I want to know if I’m part of what you wished for.”
“Why should you? I have you as my husband already.”
Shawn scoffed. “You are so uptight.”
“Well, I made a wish along with you.”
I chuckled in disbelief. “Is that even proper?”
Shawn shrugged. “I don’t know, but I made a wish with you. This time next year, we will be celebrating in doubles.”
I arched a brow at Shawn. “In doubles?”
“Yes. You and I with little Shawn and little Cassie.”
I had no idea why, but I burst into a peal of satisfied laughter.
Shawn smiled shyly. “I had no idea what I said was so funny.”
“It’s not. I just….” I was saying, then paused, trying to think of the right words to convey my feelings.
“You’ve always mentioned ‘a baby’. I guess it just felt so weird hearing little Cassie and most especially little Shawn.”
He chuckled, “Why?”
“The baby talk has always scared me, but never for once did I envision having one and it being a boy that looks like you.”
“Why? I’m not that terrible.” Shawn said with a small smile playing at the corner of his lips.
“Or are you a fan of little Cassie?”
I shook my head. “I’m not a fan of any little one. I haven’t thought deeply about the fact that the baby could either be a girl or a boy. You are strange, Shawn. I’m not sure if I want your personality in a child.”
“I’m not that bad.” My husband groaned.
I tried to fight the smile on my face. “I didn’t exactly say that.”
“There’s just some part of you that I can’t deal with. You can be bossy, controlling and silly. I’m not sure what it’s going to be like dealing with a kid like that.”
Shawn smiled sweetly. “You are talking as though little Shawn is going to exhibit such behaviour the moment he is born.”
I shrugged, ignoring the fact that he was right.
“He is going to grow up with so much love, so I know he is not going to grow up grumpy.”
I said nothing but kept staring into Shawn’s eyes. We started off very badly, but lately, we’ve been getting along so well. I couldn’t help but wonder what the fate of our relationship would be if we ever had a child. If we did, would I still get all of this attention from him? But most importantly, was I capable of taking care of a little one? Was I ready to form a family with Shawn Elias?
“You can always voice out your worries, and if the thought of having a younger version of me scares you, then we can start with little Cassie.”
I arched my brow. “Who says female children can’t have their father’s attitude?”
“Okay!!!” Shawn chuckled. “I think I’m the issue here. I guess you still don’t trust me enough to want to make a family with me.”
Shawn and I continued to stare into each other’s eyes. It was as though we could read each other's minds.
I wanted to defend myself, but at the same time, I didn’t want to put his hopes up, nor did I want him to feel bad.
Shawn caressed the back of my palm, bringing me out of my thoughts. “That was what I wished for, but let’s focus on you.”
“Are you mad at me?” I asked.
Shawn smiled. “No. I have you for the rest of my life, so whatever will be will be.”
“I know it’s going to happen when you are ready.”
“You have so much faith in us,” I mumbled.
“I do.” He said almost immediately.
“And whatever you wish for, I hope it comes true!”
“Now let’s cut your cake.” Shawn reached for a knife that was the right size for the cake, then carefully handed it to me. Shawn’s possessiveness was something I hoped I was going to get used to very soon. Once I had the knife, I pierced it into the cake. I was still on Shawn’s lap, so he whispered against my ear from behind. “Thank you for letting me spend this special day with you. My wish is for you to remain happy for the rest of your life.”
I couldn’t help with the smile that crept to my lips. It wasn’t just the statement but the sincerity in his voice melted my heart.
“I should be the one thanking you,” I answered, cutting a piece of the chocolate cake, which I transferred to a saucer nearby.
I reached for a fork on the table and filled it with some cake. “You literally reminded me of what today means and how special I am.” I turned to Shawn, positioning the cake at the entrance of his mouth. “Thank you for all you do for me and, most importantly, for being patient with me.”
“Don’t you think you should taste that first?” My husband said,
“This is my first time feeding you. You are not going to reject me, are you?”
Shawn chuckled. “Wouldn’t it be rude to taste the cake before the birthday girl?”
“No! This is just a way for me to say, "thank you.””
“Open up. My hands are getting tired.” I commanded. Shawn did, after which I fed him. I leaned my face against his and kissed his lips.
