Julian Valentin was equal parts stunned and oddly amused by the revelation. Out of habit, his arm reached for the woman beside him—only to close around empty air.
The sheets next to him were cold. She'd been gone for hours.
Julian swung his legs over the edge of the bed, his sharp eyes scanning the room in an instant. Empty. She wasn't just out of bed—she was out of the hotel entirely.
Then he spotted the bills on the nightstand.
He picked up the two crisp banknotes, momentarily at a loss.
What the hell was this? Not only had she vanished after their one-night stand, but she'd left him what could only be described as a tip?
If she thought she could humiliate him like this, she'd better pray he never found her. Otherwise— His jaw tightened as he shoved the covers aside, but then he froze.
A faint crimson stain on the sheets stopped him cold.
Had she been a virgin?
Julian snatched his phone off the nightstand and dialed the front desk. "The woman I brought here—when did she leave?"
His tone was razor-sharp, and the receptionist's voice wavered. "S-she left just after seven, sir…"
He glanced at the clock. Ten AM. He exhaled sharply and hung up before she could finish.
She'd been drunk. He didn't even know her name.
Julian stared out the window, his expression unreadable. For the first time, a one-night stand had left him… unsettled.
Of course, this was all something he told me much later.
Five years passed in the blink of an eye.
Now, alone in the quiet faculty office, I was prepping for my next class.
After that chaotic night, I'd gone back to my hometown and thrown myself into teaching.
Then came the shock—and the quiet joy—of discovering I was carrying a baby. At the time, with nothing to my name, it felt like a miracle.
I ignored the whispers and raised my son alone. The irony wasn't lost on me.
The door clicked open.
I glanced up and nodded at the man stepping inside. "Director Hill." I gathered my books, ready to head to class.
Zachary Hill, the school's dean of academics, usually kept to himself. If he was here, it wasn't for small talk.
With the office empty except for me, a knot formed in my stomach.
Sure enough, he gave a tight nod. "Vivian, hold on. There's something you need to hear."
Outside, the bell rang. Students shuffled into classrooms. I tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear. "Can it wait, Director? My class starts in five minutes."
A room full of kids was waiting.
Director Hill frowned. A flicker of sympathy crossed his face, but his voice stayed firm. "You won't be teaching anymore. You've been… let go."
There was no denying I was good at my job. But I'd become a roadblock in someone else's climb up the ladder, and now I was being shoved aside.
He sighed.
"What?" My grip tightened on the books. "Why?"
I'd worked my ass off. Just last month, the principal had hinted at a promotion. How could they just fire me?
Even after five years, I still had that same soft, warm charm. Director Hill knew about my struggles as a single mom, but all he could offer was a helpless shrug. "Don't ask why. We all have our pressures. Some things are better left alone."
Ice shot through my veins. His words told me everything I needed to know. But in places like this, just like in politics, some fights weren't worth starting.
Unable to meet my eyes, Director Hill turned away. "I'll send your replacement soon. Hand over your materials, then collect your final paycheck from accounting."
When I walked out of the school, I was still numb.
Just like that, I'd lost my job. How the hell was I supposed to take care of my son now?
