He pulled out a carefully prepared plastic bag and slipped the strands of hair inside before dialing a number. "Boss, got the DNA sample you asked for. Should I bring it to you, or take it straight to Mr. Valentin?"
The voice on the other end crackled with satisfaction. "Just bring it to me. No need to loop in Mr. Valentin—he delegated this to me. Once I have his sample, I'll send both to the lab for analysis."
By evening, Julian Valentin held two test results in his hands, along with a detailed medical report.
The boy named Gavin Roland was, without question, his son.
Julian poured himself a glass of chilled white wine, took a slow sip, and let his gaze drift toward the city lights outside his window.
So, it was true. Which meant he needed to have a very serious conversation with her.
The CEO's office of Valentin Corporation was thick with tension, two figures locked in a silent standoff.
I stole a glance at Julian's expression, my guilt swelling into a tidal wave of dread.
How did this happen? When we'd met before, he hadn't shown a flicker of suspicion. I'd been running my little shop in peace—until his assistant practically dragged me into Valentin Corp's towering headquarters.
And, of all the rotten luck—who knew my shop was right next door to his empire?
But the real gut punch came when Julian cut straight to the chase: "Is Gavin my son?"
How the hell was I supposed to answer that? "Hey, remember five years ago when I borrowed your genes for two hundred bucks and ghosted you? Surprise—we made a kid!"
My mind raced, but my mouth stayed shut, frozen like a deer in headlights.
With a quiet thud, Julian slid two sheets of paper across the desk. "Even if you won't say it, the proof is right here."
One glance told me everything. A paternity test. Game over.
"Relax," he said, his voice oddly calm. "I'm not here to blame you. But if he's my son, I have the right to bring him into the Valentin family, don't I?"
Just like that—no negotiation, no hesitation. As if he could snap his fingers and rewrite our lives.
"Absolutely not!" The words burst out before I could stop them. "He's my son too!"
Did he seriously think he could waltz in and claim Gavin after all these years? After I was the one who raised him, loved him, wiped his tears?
Julian's lips twitched, almost amused by my outburst. He steepled his fingers. "Fine. If I can't take him, at least let me see him. That's fair, isn't it?"
I narrowed my eyes. On the surface, it was reasonable. But something about the way he said it—like he was already three moves ahead—set off every alarm in my head.
When I didn't answer, he played his final card. "Think about Gavin. Doesn't he deserve a father?"
My resolve wavered.
Damn him. Gavin had asked about his dad—more than once. And every time I told him the truth—that his father was a stranger we'd never see again—his little face fell.
If Julian was serious about stepping up… maybe it would be good for Gavin.
After a long breath, I finally nodded. "Fine."
