"EAST HIGH, GO! East High, GO!"
The stadium was packed. Every corner you'd turn, there was an entire herd of excited audiences sitting in the stands. Not just high schoolers. No, there were also adults. As loud as a professional soccer match, the opening match with Shermer High versus East High got wild. It was to no surprise that this was the single most exciting event that ever took place in the city. Considering the vast amount of popularity that the match received, it was no doubt that the ticket prices would skyrocket.
When Ricky and Big Red had entered the stadium, they too were caught off guard. They could feel the adrenaline from the pitch to the stands and flowing right around the stadium. It was the tension people craved because it came right before the elation... maybe... There was something about that, the possibility of joy rather than the certainty that made it all so much fun.
"Some say it's more popular than the state's football team," Red announced, growing wide-eyed at the crowd that surrounded all around him.
Ricky furrowed his brows in disbelief. "Really? But this is just a game, that's an entire team, dude."
"Exactly my point."
The two best friends had taken the short but exhausting trip to their assigned seats on the bleachers. Knowing Red, he would spend as much money as he could for a sports match, so it didn't surprise Ricky to learn that he had opted for some of the best seats in the entire stadium: the very front.
"I'll go grab us some snacks, want anything?" Ricky asked, standing up as soon as he sat down in his seat.
"Get me some cotton candy," Red answered, fully immersed with the game that had yet to begin. "And some Pepsi."
"Gotchu." And with that, Ricky had started towards the food vendors, and much to his dismay, a bunch of students who waited impatiently for their food to be prepared too packed it.
After what felt like hours of waiting in line, he was finally next to the order. Heading up to the vendor, he ordered some popcorn for himself, cotton candy for Red, and two Pepsi drinks for both of them. Paying his due, he stepped away momentarily as he too waited for his food.
What he didn't mean to see was a girl, someone who looked way too different from he ever saw her before: Julia.
He held onto the receipt that had his order number written on it (number 11). From the distance that he was standing, Ricky couldn't register much of the way she looked, and he didn't realize that his gaze set on her for a fraction longer than it ever did before.
But...she wasn't alone. Julia was talking with some boy, one who Ricky had never seen around before. The man was fit looking than he expected. His face told of a lean body beneath his red and white soccer jersey, and his expression was serious but not unkind. He had that salt 'n' pepper look to his hair, against his still youthful skin it was better than catnip to Ricky. Who is that? Ricky unwillingly wondered to himself as he studied the way Julia put her hand on the boy's broad shoulders.
Not a moment later, the unknown boy had sauntered off to another direction - one that Ricky knew to be the team's change rooms. He let himself read the name on the back of the jersey and frowned slightly; it said "MacLeod #55" in large font.
Mustering up all of his courage, Ricky approached Julia who now stood alone with two drinks in both of her hands.
"Uh, hi," he greeted, smiling at her with a genuine look, one that he probably never gave her before. "I didn't know you were coming today."
She looked startled a bit, but quickly regained herself when she realized that it was someone she knew who spoke up. "Yeah, I am," she replied, smiling. "My friend -- he's playing today."
"Oh, that's--" his eyes unintentionally landed on the red and white scarf that wrapped warmly around Julia's neck. It had the initials "A.M." written on the exterior and Ricky couldn't help but grimace. "Nice... scarf."
"Thanks..." she trailed off awkwardly, tap-tapping her foot against the pavement and suddenly feeling the heat get to her.
"Number 11!" The loud man standing behind the counter of the vendor called out. "Food's ready, number 11!"
Ricky gave a small pleading look to Julia, muttering out that he would be right back, as he went the few steps away to retrieve his packaged food. Grabbing the snacks and waving a small "thanks" to the man, he hurried back to the girl but frowned when she was nowhere on site.
Shrugging his shoulders in embarrassment, he made his way back to his seat, as the game was about to begin at any moment. It was only when he reached the place that did Ricky realize just how lucky he got. In the seats directly beside him and Red, sat Nini and Julia.
He leaned in towards Red's ear to whisper something in his ear. "Dude, I don't like my seat. Can we switch?" In all honesty, the seat that Ricky had was perfectly fine, but he would do anything to have time to sit next to Julia - even if it meant giving up the best seat in the stadium.
"Sure." Red shrugged his shoulders, and the two switched spots, settling down in their new seats just a second later.
As the game had begun, Ricky was more-or-less paying more attention to Julia than he was at the actual match. While she was focusing her mind on the game, not realizing that she was being spied.
Ricky thought Julia was always quite the beauty, but seeing her up close only reinforced that truth. She was of fair complexion, long wisps of umber streaked with highlights of ginger that always seemed to gleam when they captured the light just right. She had the kindest pair of coffee brown eyes trimmed by long gorgeous lashes. Lovely eyes, yet somehow gentle, that always held a tiny warmth within them. Florid cheeks and flawlessly sculpted lips, as if crafted by angels themselves; sitting this close to her, he could see them clearly, glistening attractively with a cherry lip balm that added further rosy color. All these features were set together on a delicate almost, angelic face.
Why's she so dressed up today? He wondered. Even more so than at the dance. This unfamiliar look makes her so--
Ricky had unknowingly wrapped his arm around Julia's seat, and she didn't notice. Or if she did, she didn't really care. And the second thought was something that had him growing all weirdly giddy inside.
SCORE! The commentator yelled out, as the audience all clapped and cheered in unison, a whole mix of them also standing up to cheer on the — winning team?
Much to the surprise of everyone in the audience, East High had won the first seasonal soccer match of the year for the first time in over fifty years. The crowds roared in excitement and glee as the team members held up their captain in the air on the field. Chanting out loud, "Aaron, Aaron, Aaron!"
After the excitement that the game offered, Julia sat quietly on one bench that was located near the exit of the stadium. Nini was dragged away by her other friends, so Julia waited by herself. Aaron too said that there were preparations for an after-party, so he probably couldn't catch up to her so quickly. Little did he know though was that she didn't really have a ride home. The crowd too had dispersed, except for some friend groups and other audiences that had stayed behind for a little longer.
"Hey," a voice said, and Julia looked up. "Need someone to drop you home?"
Ricky.
