The moment Chase saw Sophia, his face turned pale.
He had clearly already gotten rid of that troublesome woman earlier, but now she was back again.
Zoe looked in her direction. With just one glance, she recognized Sophia as the woman who had clung to Shawn outside the camp gate the other day.
When she heard Sophia calling herself Shawn's fiancée, Zoe smiled mischievously.
She hadn't forgotten the agreement she made with Shawn—to pretend to be his girlfriend and drive away the women bothering him. She fully planned to stick to that deal.
But Zoe wasn't doing this to help Shawn. She just wanted to get close to him. Once he completely trusted her, she would strike and kill him.
It was all part of the mission.
Thinking that, Zoe casually flipped her long straight hair over her shoulder, then confidently walked forward.
Sophia was still whining sweetly to Shawn, saying, "Shawn, I brought you some soup. I made it myself. Look, I even burned my hand while cooking it."
"My hand still hurts... Can you blow on it for me?" she said as she tried to hold her hand out to Shawn.
Right as Shawn's face turned dark, Zoe stepped in and took Sophia's spot without warning. She moved fast—so fast that before Shawn could react, she threw herself into his arms.
Then, in front of everyone, she tiptoed up and gave Shawn a loud kiss on the cheek, the sound echoing in the silence.
"Shawn, didn't you promise me?" she said, her voice soft and sweet. "After the promotion ceremony, you were going to take me to watch the sunrise. You already said yes in bed last night—don't back out now."
Zoe looked deeply into Shawn's eyes, hiding a flicker of killing intent behind her loving gaze.
She played the role perfectly—more charming, more seductive than Sophia had ever been. And the moment those words left her lips, everyone around them gasped in shock.
"Whoa! Zoe just kissed Shawn in front of everyone!"
"Oh my god, did she say they slept together last night?"
The other soldiers completely bought it. They stared at the couple with wide eyes and whispered in awe.
Sophia, who had just been pushed aside, turned pale as a ghost. She looked at Zoe still wrapped in Shawn's arms.
Then she pointed a trembling finger at Zoe and angrily demanded, "Shawn, who is she?!"
"Why didn't you push her away? I thought you didn't like women touching you! I'm your rightful fiancée—you can't do this to me!" Her voice cracked with rage, and her eyes turned sharp with fury.
Sophia suddenly rushed forward, trying to rip Zoe out of Shawn's arms. "Get away from him! Who said you could touch my Shawn? Go to hell!"
A cold glint flashed across Zoe's eyes—she was about to strike back. But then something happened that completely caught her off guard.
Just as Sophia was about to reach Shawn, Zoe noticed something—Shawn wasn't staying still like he had when she got close. Instead, he lifted his leg and kicked Sophia hard in the left knee. His move was quick, precise, and ruthless.
Even though Sophia was a woman, he didn't show her the slightest bit of mercy. She dropped to the ground like a frog, landing right at Shawn and Zoe's feet.
Cold, violent, and heartless—that was the real Shawn. Zoe had already seen that side of him on the battlefield. But even now, she was still a little surprised.
The next second, Sophia curled up on the ground and started crying in pain like she'd just been deeply hurt. "It hurts! Shawn, how could you do this to me?"
She couldn't understand why he treated her this way.
The White family and the Ludwig family were the two most powerful families in all of Jelonsburg—maybe even all of Clusia. They were close allies for generations.
Sophia and Shawn had grown up together, and the families had decided long ago that the two of them would marry someday.
Sophia had always seen herself as Shawn's fiancée. But what she couldn't understand was why he never looked at her the way she wanted him to.
Back then, just to show how serious he was about refusing the marriage, Shawn had left home to serve on a foreign peacekeeping mission. That was how he eventually became Clusia's legend of war.
Sophia believed that a man like Shawn could only belong to her. She couldn't stand the idea of another woman taking him away. She was sure that Zoe had done something to seduce him.
"You bitch, this isn't over!" she shouted. "Shawn, I'm not giving up! I'll make you love me with my own true heart!"
Sophia said it loud and proud like it was some kind of dramatic love story. Then she got up, wiped her tears, and ran off sobbing and yelling.
She made up her mind to destroy any woman who dared come close to Shawn. No one was going to take her place as his wife.
"You'll regret this, Shawn!" she screamed back at him, then turned to Zoe and shouted, "You bitch, I'll make you pay!"
