The call was from Daniel. On the other end, his annoying, mocking laugh came through. "Surprised? Mad? Scared? This is what you get for crossing me."
Zoe's voice was ice-cold, her tone full of disdain. "You shouldn't have killed anyone. I'll make you pay for that."
Her voice was so calm, but anyone who knew Zoe would recognize this as the warning sign before she lost her temper.
Daniel burst out laughing, like he'd just heard the funniest joke. "Make me pay? That's hilarious."
He added, "Your guy's still with me, but he won't last much longer. If you want to save him, come to the abandoned parking lot on the east side. I'll be waiting for you, Zoe. I have to see you."
The call ended, and everyone in the room looked grim.
"Damn it!" Henry slammed his fist on the table.
"This is just too much! Henry, what do we do now?"
"We have to go get him out, right now."
As everyone spoke, they all turned to Henry, hoping he'd have a plan. But Henry looked at Zoe instead.
Zoe snapped her laptop shut and walked straight out of the room. Henry asked, "Zoe, where are you going?"
The Clusia Racing Team members were stunned for a second, then rushed out after her.
Calling the cops was pointless. Daniel's dad was the top arms dealer in Yaniston—he basically ran this place. No one would dare cross him.
Henry rushed ahead and blocked Zoe's path. "Zoe, what are you trying to do?"
"Save him. And get revenge," Zoe replied, her voice icy.
Henry frowned. "No way. You're just a girl—how can we let you go? If anyone's going, it should be us."
He was dead set on this. None of them really knew what Zoe was capable of; they just thought she was a racing prodigy, but when it came to fighting, she probably didn't stand a chance.
If she went alone, she might not make it back. Worse, those guys might rape her.
Zoe just let out a cold laugh. "They're after me. Even if you go, it won't help."
She was right. Daniel had made it clear on the phone—he wanted to see Zoe. If she didn't show up, their teammate's chances would be even worse.
"Fine, but I'm not letting you go alone. If you're going, we're all going," Henry said firmly.
Before he'd even finished, the others all spoke up too. "We're coming with you."
"Yeah, we came here together, so we'll face this together."
"How could we let you go by yourself? It's always safer to stick together."
Zoe just shrugged. "Suit yourselves."
This whole mess started because of her, so of course she'd see it through. If they insisted on tagging along, so be it—it didn't make any difference to her.
About ten minutes later, the group caught a cab and headed for the abandoned parking lot on the east side. As soon as they got close, the two taxi racers who'd brought them refused to go any further.
This wasn't just any lot—it was where the city dumped its junked cars, and a shady spot for sneaky deals. Zoe and her crew had no choice but to get out at the edge of the lot.
The place was super dark, with rows of old, abandoned cars all around. The group hesitated, not sure what to do next.
"Where are we supposed to find Daniel in all this?" someone muttered.
A henchman swaggered up, looking confident. "Daniel has been waiting for you. Follow me."
There was no point fighting with a lackey. Zoe stepped forward and followed him.
"Zoe, are you sure it's safe to just go with him? What if it's a trap?" one of the racers asked nervously.
Zoe turned her head, her eyes cold as ice, like a judge passing sentence. "If you're scared, you can leave."
They had come this far; there was no turning back. No one said anything else as they hurried to catch up. They walked right into an ambush. Suddenly, about a dozen men appeared out of nowhere, surrounding them.
Henry tensed up right away. "What's going on?"
The henchman grinned. "Daniel only wants to see Zoe. The rest of you aren't invited."
It was obvious—they were being split up on purpose, and Daniel was aiming to get Zoe alone. Henry and the others looked grim; they knew if Zoe went alone, the odds were against her.
But unlike the rest, Zoe's face didn't change.
She stayed calm, almost like she knew this was going to happen.
Henry leaned in close and whispered, "Zoe, they're after you. You can't go in there alone."
"Fine for me," Zoe's voice suddenly cut in.
The henchman let out a sneering, mocking laugh. "Right this way."
"Are you out of your mind?" Henry's voice sharpened, furious that Zoe decided to go on her own.
"You're just a girl. How could you go up against those tough guys? They're criminals. Going in alone is basically suicide!"
"Exactly! We all have some racing training, so we're not completely helpless. But you? What can you do to help anyone?"
In Henry and the others' eyes, Zoe was just a regular girl. Even if she learned a few tricks, she couldn't stand up to those guys. Walking in there was like walking straight into their trap.
Zoe's tone was cold. "I have to go. You're in this mess because of me. I'll see it through."
Whether she could handle it or not, she didn't owe them an explanation. As Firefox, she never explained herself to her team or anyone else.
She walked forward. Henry and the others didn't even have time to stop her before Daniel's men cut them off, blocking their way completely.
Just as Zoe was led away by her guide, one of Daniel's men made a call. "Daniel, everything went just as you said. Zoe is here."
"Good job," Daniel said happily, hanging up the phone.
He straightened up and told everyone behind him, "Stay alert, everyone. No matter what happens tonight, I want Zoe dead."
"Don't worry, Daniel. We'll do whatever you want."
Daniel looked toward the back of the crowd, where Sophia was standing.
She was all in black—cloak, pants, shirt, even her shoes. Her face was hidden under the hood, making her look like a shadow in the dark, impossible to see her age or who she really was.
Only her eyes showed, fixed on the scene, burning with impatience and wild excitement.
Daniel smirked. He wanted those Clusians to see for themselves—the killer he had hired was no ordinary person.
He thought, 'Zoe, unless you're the legendary mercenary queen Firefox, you're not making it out of here alive.'
