"Be honest with me," Zoe said.
Walther quickly reassured her, "I mean it! I just want to hire you as chairwoman with the highest pay. All I ask is that you watch over the big stuff and help our business grow."
Walther just wanted to make more money. As long as the company ran well, he'd get rich. Businessmen never make bad deals, and they never think they have enough.
Zoe didn't agree.
Walther started to panic, thinking maybe he hadn't shown enough sincerity. He quickly added, "I see. Making you the boss of a branch is beneath you. How about this—be the boss of Apex Investment Group, and I'll be your assistant."
Zoe shot him down right away. "Not interested. I don't have time to play your games. If that's all, I'm hanging up."
"Hey, don't hang up! We can still—"
The call ended with a beep. Zoe shoved her phone in her pocket and got in the car with Henry, heading back to the club first.
Unlike Zoe, who didn't care about Marlowe Group, Eunice and Clara were busy calling favors all over town, trying to get a spot at Marlowe Group—even if it was just an entry-level job.
But Marlowe Group was at the top now—everyone wanted in. A company this big, way above the Evans family, wasn't the kind of place Eunice could sneak into just by connections.
"Mom, how did it go?" Eunice asked quickly as soon as Clara hung up.
Clara shook her head. "No luck. I reached out to everyone I know, but they all say it's nearly impossible to get into Marlowe Group. Unless you have real talent, no amount of connections will help."
If one did get into Marlowe Group, their future was set. In Jelonsburg, they'd instantly be someone everyone looked up to.
"There's gotta be a way," Eunice said, her face dark as she clenched her fists.
This was her one shot to turn things around. If she missed it, she might never get another chance.
Not willing to give up, Clara picked up her phone again and kept trying to pull strings. No matter what, she couldn't let the daughter she raised for so many years have her whole life ruined like this.
She fumed inside, 'If it weren't for Zoe, would I really have to humble myself like this for Eunice? But that's okay. Once Eunice is back on top, I'll make sure Zoe pays for it.'
Clara made call after call, reaching out to every contact she had. But the moment those ladies heard she was asking for Eunice, they hung up right away. No one wanted to help Eunice.
After all, Eunice's reputation was already in ruins. No one would dare get involved with her.
"Don't worry, Eunice. I'll definitely help you get into that company," Clara said to try to comfort her, but Eunice didn't feel better at all.
She headed straight upstairs and dialed a number she hoped she'd never have to call.
"What for?" The voice on the other end was cold and robotic, full of contempt that made her skin crawl.
Eunice said, "I know your rule—you help me once, I owe you one. I want into Marlowe Group. Can you help me?"
The voice scoffed, "You must be joking. With the mess you're in now, what could you possibly give me?"
"I have the Evans family and all my powerful brothers. I can still be useful," Eunice shot back, her voice rising in frustration.
A low, mocking laugh came from the other end.
Eunice felt so humiliated that she wished to disappear, convinced the person on the other end would never help her.
"I can help you. But it all depends on whether you're willing to pay the price. If you are, I can make you the center of attention again. The Evans family's most precious heiress can still be you."
