In that instant, everyone in the room gasped. They thought, 'Zoe actually claimed that Marlowe Group invited her to be their chairwoman a couple of days ago? No way—how could that be possible?
'That's not just some regular company. Marlowe Group is on a whole other level—even above the White and Ludwig families. It's the place every Jelonsburg socialite dreams of getting into.
'Just landing a job there as a regular employee would boost the family's status. Not to mention being the chairwoman.
'That's a position reserved for elders. How could it possibly be Zoe's turn? Who does she think she is?'
As soon as she finished, all the heiresses in the room burst out laughing. "Where did this clown come from? Marlowe Group wants her as chairwoman? Why not just say she owns the place? Who would ever buy that?"
Betty was laughing the hardest, clutching her stomach. When she finally caught her breath, she glared at Zoe and snapped, "You liar. You're not even worthy of breathing the same air as us.
"I'm already an official employee at Marlowe Group. Pretty soon, I'll be working with Eunice. Isn't that right, Eunice?"
Betty said this with so much pride, like she'd just plucked the moon from the sky. She was absolutely full of herself.
That was only natural.
After all, at their age, only a handful of people in the entire circle could get into Marlowe Group. Of course it was something to brag about.
"That's right. Betty and I have both joined Marlowe Group. We'll be colleagues from now on," Eunice said.
The two of them stood together, looking like besties, both beaming with pride. The other heiresses around them couldn't help but feel a wave of envy.
Betty added, "Zoe, if you know what's good for you, you'll just admit you're a compulsive liar right now.
"Once we officially start at the company, your big talk won't hold up. You'll be the laughingstock of all Jelonsburg."
Everyone followed Betty's lead, laughing and mocking Zoe.
"This country girl is hilarious."
"Once Eunice and Betty start at the company, her lies will be exposed. She'll be the joke of our whole circle."
"I can't wait to see her get put in her place."
Egged on by everyone, Betty got even more arrogant. She said, "As soon as I start at Marlowe Group, I'll message all of you right away to prove she's a fraud."
"We should totally expose her online too. Let everyone see what she's really like, or she'll never know her place," another heiress chimed in.
Zoe's face was icy cold, her expression darker than ever. "So, you're officially an employee at Marlowe Group now?"
Hearing Zoe actually take the initiative to ask, Betty was momentarily stunned, but quickly snapped back to her senses.
Betty thought, 'Zoe found out I'm an employee at Marlowe Group and now she's jealous?'
The thought made Betty's heart soar with pride.
She was just a regular hire at Marlowe Group—not like Eunice, who started as a team leader in the marketing department—but at least she was in. That was more than most people could say.
She immediately lifted her chin and answered smugly, "That's right."
She thought, 'Now that you know I'm officially in, are you scared? Shocked? Jealous?'
But just as Betty was waiting for Zoe to show some envy, Zoe's cold voice cut through the air. "Good. In that case, I'm officially announcing—you're fired."
The sheer confidence and arrogance in Zoe's words made everyone freeze for a second, then turn to look at her. When Betty realized it was Zoe who had spoken, she was completely dumbfounded.
Then fury surged up inside her. She glared at Zoe and snapped, "Zoe, are you addicted to acting or something? How dare you say you're firing me? You actually believe you're the chairwoman of Marlowe Group?"
"Zoe's really got a talent for drama."
"Eunice and Betty both got official offer texts from Marlowe Group. It's a done deal. Does Zoe really think she can get Betty fired just by running her mouth? Is she magic or something?"
"Zoe's just jealous. She couldn't get into Marlowe Group herself, so now she's making up stories."
All the rich girls glared at Zoe with open hostility, chiming in.
Betty shot Zoe a provocative look. "You heard everyone, right? You said you'd fire me—go ahead, try it."
Everyone burst out laughing. To them, Zoe really was just a clown.
Off to the side, Eunice watched the whole scene unfold, eyes wide as Zoe calmly pulled out her phone and dialed a number right in front of everyone.
The call connected. Before Walther could even say a word, Zoe's icy voice came through. "I need you to fire Betty Durant from Marlowe Group. I want her erased from your system in three minutes."
With that, Zoe hung up, not giving Walther a chance to say a single word.
Zoe was always quick and sure—everyone who knew her knew she never wasted time on long calls. But even so, as soon as her orders came through, her team would move fast without hesitation.
The room went totally silent after the call ended. Then everyone burst out laughing.
"You really went all out for this act—where'd you even find someone to play along with your little show?"
"Who hangs up that fast, anyway? Zoe, are you scared we'll realize you never even made the call?" Betty's words set off another round of laughter.
But Zoe, who had just hung up, stayed quiet. She was waiting to see how fast Walther could get things done.
A minute passed. Then two. Soon, the promised three minutes were up. Just as everyone was waiting to see Zoe embarrass herself, Betty's phone suddenly started ringing in her pocket.
Seeing the caller ID, Betty grinned at everyone. "It's Marlowe Group! HR was thinking about giving me a position and told me to wait for news at home."
She added, "They must've realized how great I am—bet they're calling to promote me!"
At that, everyone in the room looked at her with envy. Getting into a big company like Marlowe Group was already impressive, and now she was getting a promotion too. What crazy luck.
Betty lifted her chin, looking even more proud.
Clearly, no one here took Zoe seriously. From the start, they'd just seen her as a joke.
To show off, Betty put the call on speaker. But as soon as the voice on the other end came through, everyone in the room was stunned.
"Betty, we regret to tell you that you've been fired from Marlowe Group."
