The loud voice on the other end of the line cut through the room, making everyone stop and freeze. Betty was totally stunned.
She had actually been fired by Marlowe Group, just like Zoe had said.
"This can't be happening!" Betty shouted right away, her body trembling as she held her phone tightly.
She had worked so hard to get into Marlowe Group, and now all of it was about to be lost. She couldn't accept this.
"Why would you fire me?" Betty yelled into the phone, desperate to get an answer.
All she heard back was the cold beep when the call was hung up. Betty's face froze, and she just stood there stiff.
She thought, 'Could Zoe really know someone important at Marlowe Group and get me fired? No—I don't think so.'
Most people there didn't believe it either. After all, Zoe was just some country girl. She couldn't possibly have the power to get Betty fired from Marlowe Group. Still, everyone was so shocked they forgot to breathe.
Out of everyone, Eunice was hit the hardest. She remembered all the times she saw Zoe's skills—her strength was both impressive and a little scary. Maybe Zoe really had been asked to be the chairwoman of Marlowe Group.
Just thinking that gave Eunice chills, and her heart twisted with worry.
But soon, Betty's reaction made Eunice relax. Betty suddenly rushed over, covered her face, and broke down crying loudly.
She said, "The company must have found out I lied about my degree. That's why they fired me. Zoe, you're such a bad luck charm! You made me lose my job."
Betty thought she was fired just because her fake degree was exposed. She truly believed it had nothing to do with Zoe's phone call.
Hearing this, everyone—including Eunice—let out a sigh of relief. It had nothing to do with Zoe; it was all Betty's own fault.
Still crying, Betty grabbed Eunice's arm. "Eunice, you're always so capable. Please, help me talk to the company. I can't lose this job! Please help me get it back."
Now that she was fired, Betty didn't want to deal with Zoe anymore. All her desperation now went to Eunice.
Eunice sighed. "If I could help, I would. But I just started working there myself."
"If my family finds out I got fired, they'll kick me out for sure! Eunice, please, you have to help me." Betty sobbed.
Eunice gave her a sympathetic look but inside she was rolling her eyes.
Eunice said, "It's not like I own the company. There's nothing I can do. Maybe you should try to find someone else to help."
While they were still talking, Zoe had already slipped past them and gone upstairs alone—she had zero interest in hanging out with these spoiled rich girls.
Back in her room, Zoe called Walther again. The moment he answered, he started bragging, "My Queen, how did I do? Are you happy now?"
"Yep," Zoe answered, her tone flat.
Walther was super excited.
Then Zoe said, "I'll take the chairperson job at Marlowe Group."
At first, Walther thought he must have heard wrong. He was stunned for a moment before finally saying, "What did you just say?
"You really agreed to be our chairwoman? That's amazing! From now on, I'll follow your lead in everything. Please, my Queen, help us reach the top and make lots of money."
Walther kept talking, but Zoe just frowned and hung up, not wanting to listen to him go on.
Zoe didn't decide to be Marlowe Group's chairwoman lightly. After thinking about it, she realized that with this new title, things would get a lot easier to handle.
Early the next morning, Eunice drove out of the Evans residence with Clara watching hopefully, heading to work at Marlowe Group. At the same time, Zoe also left the house, but no one paid any attention to her.
A fancy Rolls-Royce was quietly parked outside the Evans residence, waiting. As soon as Zoe stepped out, she got in, and the car drove her straight to Marlowe Group's main office in Jelonsburg.
Just a little later, Eunice had already checked in at the company, while Zoe was being taken upstairs by people sent by Walther.
The difference was clear—Eunice took the normal elevator with everyone else, but Zoe, surrounded by bodyguards, was led straight into the boss's private elevator.
As Zoe got into the elevator, Eunice only got a quick look at a familiar figure, but she couldn't see her face or build well.
Right then, she overheard people whispering.
"That person with bodyguards looks like our company's chairwoman."
"We're not supposed to talk about her. Keep it down."
Hearing that, Eunice felt more jealous. She thought, 'The chairwoman of Marlowe Group? What a powerful person. If I could be her friend, my future would be so bright.'
After Zoe was taken upstairs, the bodyguards stopped following her. By then, Walther was already waiting at the elevator with the top managers.
When he saw her, Walther got so excited he hurried over, wanting to shake Zoe's hand and give her a formal kiss on the hand. For him, this was a huge honor, and Zoe didn't refuse.
After he finished the hand-kiss, Zoe asked, "You called me so early. What's going on?"
Walther smiled, "We're officially announcing your role as chairwoman. This is the most important event today. We want to make it special."
At Walther's signal, everyone bowed deeply to Zoe. "Please lead us, Zoe!"
Zoe didn't care much about all the fancy ceremony—she just went through the motions and was ready to leave.
But Walther took it seriously. He said, "My Queen, don't leave just yet. Since it's a board meeting, you should say a few words in the conference room. Everyone's waiting to hear."
Honestly, besides Walther, the other managers didn't really know much about Zoe.
They couldn't understand why Walther, the strongest businessman in Goldewood, would do so much for a young woman like Zoe, even make her the chairwoman.
Still, no matter how surprised they were, none dared to say a word. They just watched Zoe follow Walther into the meeting room.
Inside, a handsome young man was already waiting, probably in his early twenties. He looked very neat, and his bright eyes sparkled with sharp, almost fierce energy.
He was like a wolfdog—he had the fierce spirit of a wolf but also the loyalty and earnestness of a dog. Guys like him definitely caught the eye of strong, independent women. He looked energetic and devoted.
Zoe looked at Walther, who immediately smiled and said, "My Queen, I know you're busy, and I wouldn't want to bother you with small things. That's why I got you the best assistant.
"Don't let his age fool you—he's very capable. Honestly, there's nothing he can't handle.
Walther turned to the guy and said, "Emmett, introduce yourself. From now on, you'll serve Zoe with all your heart."
