Emmett, standing outside the car window, was completely stunned as he watched Shawn lean in and kiss Zoe. His mind went blank, and his eyes flickered with emotions he couldn't even name.
Right at that moment, Shawn shot him a sidelong glance—cool, arrogant, and full of unspoken challenge. Emmett, already frozen in place, suddenly felt a wave of danger closing in on him from all sides.
It was like a wild animal had locked onto him, ready to tear out his throat at any second. Emmett couldn't help but shiver.
By the time he snapped out of it, Shawn had already let go of Zoe, and the car in front of him roared off, tires screeching as it sped away.
Back in the car, Zoe was still in shock—Shawn had just pulled her in with a wild, stormy energy and kissed her hard, completely taking her by surprise.
Shawn never did things like that. The only several times anything close had happened before, they were her making the first move, just to mess with him and see him flustered.
Thinking about it, Zoe's expression darkened a little. Ever since they got back from Yaniston, Shawn had been acting off. Almost like he was even more passionate than before.
The thought sent a jolt through Zoe, but before she could think too much about it, the car came to a stop.
Shawn's deep voice followed. "Get out," he said. But Zoe didn't budge.
She shot him a look. "Mr. Ludwig, not only was that move just now pretty out of the blue, but don't you think you owe me an explanation for bringing me here?"
Zoe glanced out the window and saw a banquet hall ahead, packed with people inside and out.
She was totally confused, but Shawn didn't give her a chance to ask anything.
He didn't bother explaining. Instead, his lips moved and he said, "Just come with me." Then he got out, walked around to her side, and, looking every bit the gentleman, opened the door for her.
Shawn's attitude at that moment was totally different from his earlier cold "keep your distance." Zoe couldn't help but narrow her eyes.
But instead of getting out, she decided to stir things up. She stretched out her arms toward Shawn, putting on a sweet, dramatic act. "My legs are numb, Mr. Ludwig. How about you carry me out?"
Zoe only said this to embarrass Shawn. After all, with his personality, there's no way he'd actually do something like that in front of so many people. He'd definitely care about appearances.
But to her shock, Shawn didn't even hesitate. He bent down, his lean but strong frame moving easily, and scooped Zoe up from the car in a princess carry, right in front of everyone.
Zoe barely had time to react before Shawn scooped her up and strode straight toward the banquet hall.
As they stepped through the grand doors, Zoe realized the place was packed with Jelonsburg's most powerful and influential figures—faces she'd only ever seen on the news or heard about in passing.
Their dramatic entrance instantly drew a wave of shocked and incredulous stares from the crowd.
Even the Jelonsburg big shots who knew Shawn well were stunned. He was never the type to make a scene like this.
Cameras flashed wildly as reporters and influencers scrambled to capture every second, desperate to immortalize this picture-perfect moment between the striking couple, Shawn and Zoe.
This press conference was originally meant to announce the engagement between the Ludwig and White families.
Shawn had always refused the arranged marriage, and his relationship with Zoe from an ordinary background infuriated Joseph. In the end, he decided to use the family's power to force Shawn into accepting the match with the White family.
But Shawn was never one to play by the rules. Before either family even arrived, he carried Zoe right into the press hall, making his intentions crystal clear.
The reporters, who thought they were about to witness a historic engagement between two powerful families, were completely blindsided.
