If everything went smoothly, she would finally take down Shawn and leave the Evans family behind for good. The thought sent a cold, determined glint flashing through her eyes.
Two hours before the party, Clara emerged with her LV handbag, the sparkle of her diamond ring and Piaget necklace announcing her presence.
With Eunice holding her arm and her two distinguished sons in tow, the impeccably dressed family entered the waiting car and left the Evans residence.
When they arrived at the Evergreen Hotel, the party was already lively. The room was full of elegantly dressed women proudly showing off their accomplished children, chatting effortlessly in the luxurious setting.
Clara let out a quiet sigh of relief. 'Glad that I didn't bring Zoe. That troublemaker will only humiliate the Evans family,' she thought to herself.
She entered the party hall with Eunice, feeling triumphant—until her eyes landed on someone she never expected to see.
"Zoe?" Eunice gasped, covering her mouth. "How did you get in? You weren't invited... Wait, don't tell me you stole an invitation."
Zoe leaned against the dessert table in her plain black tracksuit, casually sipping an expensive cocktail.
For a moment, her confidence almost made her fit in with the wealthy crowd. But her sportswear stood out sharply against all the formal evening wear, making it clear she didn't belong.
Joyce's party invitations were exclusive—even the whole Evans family had only gotten one.
Eunice's outburst turned heads. Now, all the elegantly dressed socialites were staring at the scene.
Clara's expression darkened. She usually enjoyed others' embarrassment, but now the tables had turned—and Zoe was to blame. "What are you doing here? You don't belong at this level. Leave immediately," she snapped.
She couldn't understand how her two daughters could be so different. Eunice was her pride and joy, while Zoe, her actual firstborn, had only ever been a disappointment.
Clara's face contorted in disgust. She wanted Zoe gone before the situation worsened, but it was too late. Zoe's classmates had already noticed her.
"Wait, isn't that Zoe? The Evans family's long-lost daughter?" a student sneered. "She's got no talent, just nerve. First, she cheated off Eunice's work, and now she sneaks in with a stolen invitation?"
"Pathetic. How is this thief even part of the Evans family?" another jeered.
"Look at her—dressed like a peasant. Probably can't even recognize designer labels. How pathetic to show up like this," someone else added.
Laughter and cruel remarks filled the hall.
Clara felt like she'd been slapped. At every previous party, she'd brought Eunice to laugh at other families' shortcomings. But now, Zoe was making her lose face.
She whirled around, glaring at Zoe. "You rascal, always sneaking around and causing trouble, huh? Give back that invitation you stole."
As Clara's unfair scolding rang out, Zoe lifted her gaze, her eyes glinting like steel. She fixed them on Clara—the woman who had given birth to her but had never been a mother.
Clara had hurt her again and again. But now, with no family ties left, Zoe felt nothing. Clara's words meant nothing to her.
"The invitation is mine," Zoe said flatly. "I'm not leaving."
"How dare you talk back to me!" Clara's voice was shaking with rage. She raised her hand, the diamond bracelet glinting, and pointed at Zoe.
"You're still pretending this invitation is yours?" Clara hissed. "Do you have any idea how impossible it is to get into one of Ms. Yoder's events? Our whole family only got one invitation, so stop this nonsense.
"Tell us who gave it to you. If you can't prove it's yours, you must have stolen it."
Under their stares, Zoe's eyes turned cold for a heartbeat before her lips curled into a smirk. The bitter truth was clear—her own mother trusted anyone but her.
Then she delivered the knockout blow. "Ms. Yoder personally gave this to me."
