Their eyes locked, and the tension was palpable.
Just as Zoe was about to make another move, the elevator chimed and the doors slid open.
Zoe looked a little downcast. She tossed her hair, let her hand trail lightly across Shawn's chest like a feather, shot him a teasing wink, and strolled out of the elevator as if nothing had happened.
Shawn stayed behind, still standing in the elevator. He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth with his fingertip, pressed his lips together, and slowly ran his tongue over the lingering taste of blood.
For a long moment, his sharp, hawk-like eyes followed Zoe's retreating figure. Shawn thought, 'My little fox, those teeth of yours are sharper than I thought.'
As Zoe walked out, her face was visibly tense.
She looked a little annoyed—she hadn't expected to lose control of the situation to Shawn, of all people. Clearly, she needed to rethink her approach.
Still, things happened today had sent her a clear message. Her fingers had been just inches from his throat, so close to making her move, but his guard was just too high.
Whether Shawn actually cared about her or not, as long as he kept his defenses up, she didn't stand a chance.
Things were getting more complicated like something was slipping out of her grasp. Zoe's eyes darkened.
Just as Zoe was about to flag down a cab, Shawn's hand caught hers, his deep voice coming slowly. "Let me take you."
Zoe let out a soft laugh and pulled her hand back. "No need. The Ludwig family's a mess right now. You should go clean it up. Just don't let your problems spill over onto me."
After all, she had no intention of actually joining the Ludwig family. If they tried to drag her into their mess, she wouldn't hesitate to deal with them herself.
Shawn could even hear the hint of gloating in her voice. Even as Zoe got into the cab and left, the playful spark in her eyes never faded.
Shawn thought, 'This mischievous little fox—one day, I'd make sure she stayed by my side, willingly.'
When Zoe got home, she didn't bother worrying about how the rest of the Evans family might react. She headed straight to her room, pulled out her phone, and shot off a message to Yancy: [Come see me. Now.]
The message was short and to the point. If anyone else had sent something like this to Yancy, he probably would've just ignored it.
But Zoe was different. She was the real deal—the one person he'd never dare brush off. The moment he saw her message, Yancy replied almost instantly: [At your command.]
After texting Yancy, Zoe tossed her phone onto the bed and went to take a shower, not the least bit worried that he might not show up.
After all, it was always Yancy chasing after her, and she was the one ignoring him.
Sure enough, just as Zoe expected, things played out exactly as she'd predicted.
On the other side of the world, Yancy's hands were shaking with excitement when he saw Zoe's message.
She'd finally reached out to him. He'd been waiting for this moment for what felt like forever.
Yancy barked, "Someone! Cancel all my appointments—I'm heading to Clusia."
His apprentice Lucas Muller was caught off guard. "Mr. Lewind, aren't there still several high-ranking nobles waiting for your consultation? If we leave now..."
"Enough with the chatter. Go book the flight right now. If you mess this up, you're out of the sect." Yancy roared, sounding more like an overexcited kid than his usual calm and polite self, his excitement practically written all over his face.
Lucas had never seen him like this before. Startled, he rushed off to arrange the flight to Clusia, all the while wondering, 'Just who could possibly make Mr. Lewind this desperate to meet us?'
