At this point, Joseph seemed to feel he owed Zoe an explanation. After all, she was the one who brought the miracle doctor here. She really did keep her promise and managed to invite him, all the way to Jelonsburg in Clusia.
Thinking this, Joseph ignored Sophia and told Zoe, "I may be a stubborn old man, but you can trust that I keep my word. If Mr. Lewind can cure my wife, I'll stop meddling in your marriage with my grandson. What I promised, I'll do."
As soon as he said this, Sophia's expression changed. Anyone could tell that Joseph's attitude toward Zoe was starting to shift, and that made her feel seriously uneasy.
But things got even worse for her. Yancy stood there with his hands behind his back, looking calm as he said, "You people are really something. Since you all know my master, why come to me with your problems? Why not go straight to her?
"Anything I can do, my master can do. And what I can't do, she still can. Honestly, I doubt there's a single illness in this world she can't cure.
"You're just making things complicated for no reason. Totally unnecessary, really."
It was like a thunderclap went off in everyone's mind—total shock.
They thought, 'So what Yancy meant was that Zoe's medical skills were even better than his? And that there wasn't a single illness she couldn't cure? That sounded way too wild. What if it was something truly incurable?'
Almost as if he could read everyone's thoughts, Yancy added, "As long as someone's still breathing, my master can save them—no matter how tough the case is."
That statement was even more jaw-dropping than before. Bringing someone back as long as they had a single breath left was straight out of a martial arts novel.
If even a fraction of that was true, people would be lining up for a chance, even if it was just a sliver of hope.
At this point, even the maids and housekeepers couldn't sit still—they all crowded around Zoe.
"Ms. Evans, can we exchange contact info?"
"Ms. Evans, my daughter's about your age. Maybe she could learn medicine from you?"
"Ms. Evans..."
Even the Ludwig family's most stubborn elders, the ones who'd always been against her, were now looking at Zoe with completely different eyes.
Sophia knew exactly what that meant—it was a sign they were starting to accept Zoe. Being totally ignored by the Ludwig family at that moment left Sophia completely stunned.
Her anger shot straight to the boiling point, just waiting for one last spark to set it off.
"Alright, Mr. Lewind, let's get back to the main thing. Please, come take a look at my wife," Joseph said, pulling everyone's attention back to what really mattered.
Yancy was just about to agree, but Sophia spoke up coolly from the side, "Grandpa Joseph, we still haven't figured out if this doctor is the real deal. What if he's just a fake?
"If someone just brought him in to put on a show, and we let some phony treat Shawn's grandma, wouldn't that be way too reckless?"
As soon as she said that, everyone turned to look at Yancy. She actually had a point.
After all, Yancy had never shown his real face to anyone. The more mysterious someone is, the easier it is for people to pretend to be them. Now that Sophia brought it up, it made sense, and many people started to get suspicious.
They thought, 'Seriously, is it really that easy to invite someone like Mr. Lewind? What if Zoe just paid an actor to play the part?'
Joseph's face instantly darkened. He looked straight at Zoe. "What do you have to say?"
Zoe didn't say a word. She never bothered to explain herself—there was always someone else who would do it for her.
Sure enough, the next second, Yancy was absolutely furious. He snapped, "This is the first time anyone's ever called me a fake. Fine, let's see who's real and who's not." With that, he strode right up to Joseph.
Under Joseph's shocked gaze, Yancy closed his eyes, thought for a couple of seconds, and then went straight to the point. "Your heart's not in great shape. You had bypass surgery about a year ago.
"But those so-called doctors didn't really fix the problem—your blood vessels are still a mess. Let me give you a needle and see if I can sort out your blood vessels right now."
