Joseph swallowed hard, anxiety written all over his face.
Just then, Shawn spoke up from the side, "Since things have settled down, I'll take her and head out first."
There were still soldiers standing inside and outside the house, all armed to the teeth. It looked more like a warzone than a home. Anyone passing by would think Shawn was leading troops into battle.
"Go ahead, just leave," Joseph said, distracted by his thoughts and agreeing without hesitation.
With that, the soldiers moved out in perfect formation, disciplined and efficient, clearing the Ludwig residence. Soon, the place was empty.
Zoe got into Shawn's car, and they drove off together.
Back inside, Joseph stood by the floor-to-ceiling window. He watched as Zoe got into Shawn's car and the car disappeared from view. He instructed, "Someone, come here."
One of his subordinates asked, "Yes, sir? What are your orders?"
Joseph said, "I told you to look into Zoe before. Did you do a thorough job?"
The subordinate quickly shook his head and said, "We did, sir. Zoe's background is crystal clear. She's the Evans family's long-lost daughter, just recently found. All her records are checked out.
"We even sent people to the small town where she used to live, and everything matched up perfectly. There's no way we got it wrong."
Joseph suddenly turned, his presence overwhelming as he glared at his subordinate. He snapped, "You did? Does she look like a small-town girl?"
The subordinate broke out in a cold sweat on the spot. He felt that what Joseph said made sense and was irrefutable.
Ever since Zoe came back from that small town, she had been stirring up one big event after another. The subordinate thought, 'If she is just some girl from the sticks, how could she possibly be this capable?
'Picking up all these skills on her own? That just doesn't add up. This isn't some sci-fi movie where an ordinary person suddenly unlocks superpowers and shoots for the stars.'
With that thought, the subordinate hurriedly said, "It's my fault, sir. But we did dig up everything we could before. I'll go reinvestigate right away."
Joseph said, "Hold on. This girl is no ordinary person. If even Shawn can't figure out who she is, then whoever's backing her must be a force to be reckoned with."
The subordinate looked surprised. He said, "If your guess is right, does Mr. Shawn Ludwig not know her true background?"
Joseph was caught off guard by the question. He thought, 'Shawn is always proud and stubborn. He is never one to go out of his way for any woman. Yet he keeps going out on a limb to protect Zoe.
'If he doesn't know who Zoe really is, will he go so far as to defy the family? Maybe the whole Ludwig family has been played by these two kids all along.'
Joseph said, "Go on. Don't dig into Zoe herself. Check out the people she's close to. That should give us a clue about who she is. Even if we can't get the full picture, we'll at least be able to make some educated guesses."
The subordinate replied, "Yes, I'll get right on it."
Joseph stayed by the window, deep in thought. He thought, 'If Zoe's background is as extraordinary as it seems, maybe even on par with the White family, then handing the Ludwig family over to Shawn would be nothing to worry about.
'With such a capable partner by his side, the two of them could easily protect our family's legacy. Maybe they could even take us to new heights.
'I'll wait a little longer. Once I have solid proof, I can hand over the family head position with peace of mind.'
Joseph could never have imagined that Zoe's true identity was something he wouldn't even dare believe. He'd never guessed that Zoe didn't come to the Ludwig family to marry Shawn but to kill him.
