A group of people hurried into the White family villa.
Joseph walked straight to the center of the hall, blocking Zoe's way.
Normally, whenever Marvin saw his old friend Joseph, he'd always greet him with respect.
But today, he was fuming and waving his hand as he snapped, "Well, Joseph! Not only did you openly break off the marriage agreement between our families, but just look at Zoe.
"She actually barges into my house and makes a scene today!" Marvin said.
"This time, you owe us an explanation. The White family won't be bullied anymore!" the White family said.
As soon as Marvin spoke, the rest of the White family chimed in, determined to make the Ludwig family give them an answer.
Otherwise, people would think the White family is easy to push around. Any girl from a lower family could just show up and try to kill someone in their own home.
Moreover, they couldn't even stop her. The White family thought, 'How can we possibly hold our heads up in Jelonsburg after this?'
Before coming, Joseph had already heard the whole story from his eldest son.
If Zoe really killed someone in the White residence today, the relationship between the two families would be completely destroyed.
It would only end in both sides losing out.
Besides, in Clusia, if Zoe killed someone, her life would end in prison.
For all these reasons and for the sake of the family, Joseph rushed over just to stop Zoe.
Joseph said, "Look, I admit the Ludwig family was in the wrong for breaking off Shawn's engagement. This time, I'll make sure Zoe backs off and lets Miss Sophia go.
"But after this, the marriage contract is settled. Don't use it as an excuse to make things difficult for us again."
Marvin shot back, "Oh, so now it's all our fault? Don't act like the White family was desperate to marry off our granddaughter to your grandson. We're not that cheap, you know!"
While the two old men argued in booming voices, Zoe couldn't care less. She wasn't interested in their bickering and was ready to make her move again.
"Stop!" the White family members shouted in unison.
Joseph finally realized how dire things were. He walked up to Zoe and said, "Zoe, my child, can you do me a favor today and just let this go for my sake?"
Zoe's voice was icy. "No way." Her tone left no room for argument.
Joseph's smile froze on his face. "You don't understand, child. Not everything in this world is black and white. Sometimes you have to be flexible."
Zoe let out a cold, mocking laugh, her eyes sweeping over the photos scattered across the White residence's hall with utter disdain.
"Flexible? Will being flexible bring those kids back? Even if they died on the battlefield, at least that would've been honorable. But to die because of some ridiculous feud between rich families? That's just pathetic," Zoe said.
Hearing this, Joseph followed her gaze to the photos on the floor. His pupils shrank sharply.
One of the photos, not far from him, showed a little girl, maybe two or three years old, her hands, feet, and head all brutally severed.
Anyone with a shred of conscience would be sickened by such a sight. Joseph immediately turned his face away.
But after a deep breath, for the sake of both families, he still said, "Even so, killing her won't bring those children back. And under Clusia's law, if you kill her today, you won't survive either.
"Why not let her live? She'll pay for what she's done sooner or later."
He was right. If Zoe killed Sophia here, her only option would be to flee Clusia.
The mission to assassinate Shawn would be blown—no way to finish it.
