Gerald's reaction silenced everyone. Only Zoe, after he took the invitation from her, raised an eyebrow and smiled teasingly. Her beautiful smile captivated everyone present, causing a momentary lapse in attention, as if they were all momentarily lost in admiration.
With everything settled, Zoe saw no reason to stick around and be stared at. She slipped away so quickly that even Joyce, Robert, and the other Jelonsburg big shots didn't have a chance to catch up.
When Zoe and Gerald got back to the Evans residence, the vibe in the house was just off. Not only were all five brothers, Clara, and Eunice at home, but even Bruce who was usually always away on business was there too.
So for once, the whole Evans family was gathered in the living room. Zoe just shot Clara and Eunice a cold look, brushed past everyone, and headed straight upstairs.
"Stop! Everyone has gone home, and you didn't even think about calling them? Where are your manners? Are you even a part of the Evans family anymore? Do you have no sense of propriety? How long are you going to act like a country bumpkin?"
Clara suddenly called out from behind, her tone flat and full of disdain. Then she added, "Even a stray dog from the small town would learn to behave after being brought home."
The meaning was obvious. She was saying Zoe wasn't even as good as a dog from small town. At that moment, Clara was hugging Eunice, who'd clearly been crying, and glaring daggers at Zoe.
Though both were her daughters, only Eunice mattered to Clara. It wasn't just because of Eunice's talents; more importantly, Clara had nursed Eunice from infancy, forming a deep bond. The emotional connection between them was incomparable.
Her cold, heartless words made Zoe stop in her tracks. She turned slightly; her voice icy as she shot back. "Your daughter? Isn't your daughter right there in your arms?"
She was clearly mocking Clara for only ever seeing Eunice as her daughter, calling out her blatant favoritism. As soon as the words left her mouth, Clara's face darkened instantly, her anger written all over her face.
"Fine! You ungrateful brat. If I'd known you'd hurt Eunice like this, I never would've had you brought back. Now all you do is go against your family. Who knows what kind of trouble you'll cause for the Evans family in the future?"
Clara was fuming, but Eunice tried to comfort her. "Mom, don't be mad. I'm sure Zoe didn't mean it."
"Didn't mean it? She comes home and doesn't even greet her parents. She's really picked up all those wild habits from the small town—no manners at all," Clara snapped, glaring at Zoe.
The atmosphere grew awkward. Hearing his mother criticize Zoe, Gerald finally couldn't hold back and spoke up for her. "Mom, please stop. Zoe is very talented and brought honor to our family today. How has she harmed the Evans family's interests?"
Gerald rarely spoke up, so when he saw her usually cold and silent fifth brother actually standing up for Zoe, Eunice was instantly filled with jealousy.
Suddenly, she said, "Gerald's right. Zoe was incredible today. Compared to her, I'm nothing. She's the daughter you should be proud of, not me."
As she spoke, Eunice burst into tears. The moment she started crying Clara's heart just about broke. "No, my precious girl, don't cry, Eunice. In my heart, you'll always be my perfect little princess—no one could ever compare to you."
You could say Clara took favoritism to the extreme. Trying to lighten the mood, Gerald pulled out an invitation from the Eminence Nexus. "Do you guys know what this is?"
The Evans brothers glanced over, and it was Sean who spoke up. "It's an invitation." He didn't think much of it, assuming it was just something ordinary. Gerald nodded.
It was indeed an invitation. But when Gerald slowly opened it in front of everyone, revealing the unmistakable gold-embossed words "Eminence Nexus," the brothers' eyes widened in shock. The sight hit them like a blow to the head, leaving them stunned.
"This is an invitation from the Eminence Nexus! Gerald, how did you get this?" Herbert, the third brother, was so excited he snatched the invitation for a closer look.
