Sean's words hit the mark, and everyone paused.
They'd never doubted Zoe's past was real. But now, they realized it very well might be fake.
At that moment, Herbert snapped his fingers as if he'd remembered something. "Oh, right—I just recalled that Zoe showed us her arm once. It was covered in scars."
"All kinds—new and old—and none looked like normal scrapes," he added. "I handle guns a lot, so I could tell some were knife cuts, some were bullet wounds, and a few even looked like burns from an explosion."
That was huge. It could point straight to Zoe's true background. Yet nobody knew why Zoe would hide her real life story and claim she came from a tiny village.
One thing was clear: Zoe wasn't just an ordinary girl.
But the Evans men didn't realize her real identity was far more frightening than they could imagine.
Bruce slapped the table and told Sean, "Sean, I'm putting this on you. You have to find out everything Zoe has been through—and where she really grew up. I want to know her true history."
"Got it, Dad," Sean said.
Although Bruce had tasked Sean with digging into Zoe's past, it didn't change the high regard his sons had for her.
Sean, Charlie, and Gerald already admired Zoe greatly. Even Herbert and Jacob—who'd been wary of her at first—were utterly won over after she gave them some expert tips.
Now they not only saw Zoe as their sister but also as their idol and mentor.
With her five brothers fawning over her, Zoe enjoyed a warmer life than ever. But things at the White residence weren't nearly as harmonious.
After Samuel, Alex, and Simon were soundly beaten by Zoe's skill, they rushed home, eager to get the full story from Sophia.
Sophia, under house arrest and unable to follow the match updates on her phone, was on pins and needles waiting for news. When her brothers burst in, she ran up to them.
"Samuel, Alex, Simon—did you do it? What happened to Zoe? Is she... dead?" she blurted out.
Her brothers' faces turned stone-cold when they saw her eyes shining with joy.
"Sophia, we need to ask you some questions," Samuel said.
Sophia's heart sank. "Samuel, come on, why so serious? Just tell me the result first—did Zoe—"
"She's not dead," Alex cut in.
Simon shook his head and sighed. "Sophia, you'd better tell us the truth. Don't make us regret trusting you."
Their sudden harshness made Sophia panic. If Zoe lived, the revenge plan had failed—and she knew all too well what Zoe was capable of. She feared the White family wouldn't protect her if Zoe came after her.
Overwhelmed, Sophia couldn't focus on their words.
"You said you were so amazing! That nothing could stop you!" she yelled. "Why couldn't you beat a teenage girl? Now if she comes for me, I'm as good as dead!"
Upon hearing Sophia's words, Samuel, Alex, and Simon finally realized that, just as Zoe had warned, Sophia—whom they'd pampered for years—had been using them.
Samuel's expression grew cold. Even though he hated the truth, he spread out on the table all the evidence he'd gathered of Sophia's wrongdoings.
"We've checked everything," he said. "Zoe has been funding that orphanage all these years. That massacre happened because of you, didn't it?"
Sophia's eyes darted around as she tried to lie, "No... it wasn't me. I stayed here the whole time. It was that arms dealer who called me. I was forced to share some info."
"And these documents... they're fake. Zoe forged them," she went on, believing that all the evidence was provided by Zoe.
At this point, Samuel, Alex, and Simon had already been completely disappointed with Sophia.
"Fake?" Samuel said icily, "You think there's nothing to prove your crime because the arms magnate from Yaniston was wiped out by Eminence Nexus? But we still found some clues. And Sophia, these documents aren't provided by Zoe—they're from our own investigation."
He leaned forward. "I was already suspicious when you suddenly asked about Firefox's weaknesses. You knew there was some link between Zoe and Firefox—and tried to use that to get back at Zoe, didn't you?"
Samuel had guessed it all. Sophia nearly broke down but still managed to shout back, "No! Zoe actually is—"
She'd meant to say that Zoe was Firefox, the most formidable mercenary. But she stopped herself. She couldn't reveal that.
If the White family learned Zoe was Firefox, they'd lock Sophia away forever—and never let her near Shawn again. In everyone's mind, Firefox was an utterly terrifying force.
Samuel snorted. "And now you're still making excuses. Sophia, you've really let us down.
"In any case, the killing is real, and we can't just let you off. You'll stay home and think about what you've done. One day we'll take you to Zoe and make you apologize in person."
Even though Samuel, Alex, and Simon cared about their sister, they knew right from wrong. Now that Sophia had committed such a horrific crime, they felt they had to help her make amends in their own way.
"No! Samuel, I'm not going. I'm innocent. I absolutely won't go!" Sophia yelled, her eyes wide. She feared that if her brothers faced Zoe, things would only get worse.
But by then, her brothers didn't believe a word she said. They just slammed the door and left.
Sophia sank to the floor as the door clicked shut behind them. She had no idea what to do next.
She felt doomed. If Zoe—Firefox—found out Sophia had tried to use her brothers to kill her, she would come for Sophia next. Sophia wasn't sure she'd survive this time.
Her whole body went limp. She cared about Shawn but was terrified of dying. She couldn't just wait to be killed, so she forced herself to calm down and pulled herself up by the bed.
"I have to get away. I refuse to believe there's nowhere safe from Firefox. But I won't give up. Zoe, I'll come back. I'm only running away for now," she muttered to herself and began packing a suitcase.
Just then, her phone rang.
Sophia grabbed it and saw it was a private number—she had no idea who was calling. The ringing made her even more annoyed. She pressed "answer."
"Who are you? Are you here to kill me too?" she blurted out, her mind scrambled by fear of Zoe.
An icy, mysterious voice spoke on the other end. "You must be Ms. Sophia White. I imagine you're terrified right now. I can understand—you crossed Firefox. She'll be coming for you soon."
"Stop it! Who are you? Cut the spooky act—what do you want?" Sophia's voice cracked with panic.
A strange laugh drifted through the line before the caller said coolly, "I know you're scared, and I know you don't want to die. I even know you're planning to run away.
"But don't worry. As long as we're involved, you have nothing to fear from Firefox—or from Shawn. If you help us, we'll get rid of Firefox for you—and make sure Shawn belongs only to you."
