The announcement repeated three times, and its chilling message shocked all the researchers present.
Just a moment ago, they'd thought Zoe was simply trying to show off her abilities. Now, they were completely silenced.
"There... there really are bombs. But who could've planted them?" Frank muttered, still in disbelief.
At that moment, a group of staff members came running from the distance. Without hesitation, they grabbed Frank and the other researchers, urging them to evacuate immediately.
This was no time to be thinking—survival came first.
"I'm not leaving! My design schematics are still in there!" Frank said stubbornly.
"Me neither," said another researcher. "My life's work is stored in that lab. If we leave now, all of it will be gone. I can't even imagine how many more years it would take to rebuild all of it and help Clusia move forward."
"I'm not going either!"
"None of us are!"
More and more researchers stood their ground, declaring their intent to stay. They would rather perish with their research than abandon everything they had dedicated their lives to—everything they believed would one day make Clusia stronger.
The staff in charge of the evacuation were deeply moved, but also filled with worry. They pleaded with them:
"Please don't be stubborn—just go! Your research and data might be important, but your lives are even more valuable!"
"Clusia needs you alive!"
"They're right! As long as you're safe, the research can always be done again. You are Clusia's greatest asset!"
As they spoke, tears welled up in their eyes.
They wanted so badly to convince the researchers to give up the fruits of their work and flee to safety, but at the same time, they couldn't help but feel a growing fury at whoever had planted the bombs.
No one could understand what kind of motive would drive someone to destroy years—decades—of people's hard work and dreams.
However, these researchers had spent their whole lives immersed in their work. They had long developed a spirit of sacrificing everything for their research, even their own lives.
They flatly refused to obey the evacuation orders and insisted on staying behind to live—or die—with the research base.
"What do we do now?" The staff assigned to the evacuation were in a complete panic. If both the personnel and their research were lost, the consequences would be unthinkable—and they'd be the ones held responsible.
The staff were frantic, running in circles, while the researchers stood firm, fuming with frustration and unwilling to leave. The evacuation operation was completely stalled.
It was then that Zoe suddenly spoke up. "You all go first. I'll stay behind and defuse the bombs. I'll bring out all your research data and materials with me."
Her tone was detached and calm, carrying a quiet authority that somehow inspired trust.
The moment those words left her mouth, everyone froze. Then, slowly, they came back to their senses. All eyes turned toward Zoe in shock. Many couldn't bring themselves to believe her—after all, she was just a teenage girl.
"Little girl," someone said incredulously, "this isn't something you can joke about. Those are real bombs. Even a single mistake during defusal could kill you instantly."
This really wasn't a task that a teenager could—or should—handle, and so the crowd tried to dissuade her.
"Yeah, Zoe! You're much more talented the rest of us, sure—but those bombs are extremely dangerous. We don't even know how many there are, where they've been planted, or how much time we have left on the countdown. There are too many unknowns."
"Not to mention... you don't have any obligation to die with this place."
