Joyce gestured to the staff to escort Zoe away, while she and the other researchers resolved to stay behind and try to salvage as much data as they could.
To them, the top priority now was preserving as much of their work as possible. Their own lives... they had long stopped valuing that above the mission.
But of course, Zoe had no intention of leaving. She abruptly turned, abandoning the secure door in front of her and heading straight into another lab.
"Hey! That's my lab! Don't tell me there's a bomb in there too? Zoe, wait for the bomb squad! You can't go in there!" a researcher shouted desperately.
But Zoe stepped inside anyway. And then—right in front of everyone—she did something that shocked the entire room.
She paused, eyes moving thoughtfully, and raised her hand to gesture for silence. The crowd quickly quieted down. Zoe listened carefully, brows lifting as if she'd picked up something no one else could hear. Then, without hesitation, she walked toward a desk in the lab.
She pulled open one of the drawers—and there it was. A live, ticking time bomb, tucked away inside.
The sight sent a chill down everyone's spine. No one could believe what they were seeing: Zoe had located a bomb using nothing but her sense of hearing.
Everyone sucked in a sharp breath.
Robert muttered, "The foreign experts were just here... and now there are bombs in our base. This has to be part of their plan, doesn't it?"
But there was no evidence—only suspicion and quiet curses under their breath.
What they didn't see was that, up ahead, Zoe had already knelt down and was calmly preparing to defuse the bomb.
Just then, a group of people wearing specialized protective suits suddenly entered from outside. "Bomb detected! Everyone evacuate immediately! Do not interfere with the defusal operation!"
"The bomb squad's here already? That's great!" The researchers lit up with relief at the sight of the professionals. If the experts could safely disable the bomb, their life's work might be saved.
The bomb disposal team entered the lab and were immediately alarmed to see Zoe fiddling with the bomb's wiring. Their faces tensed up in panic.
"Who are you? Are you insane, messing with a live bomb without any protective gear?" the team leader barked. "Do you want to blow this place sky-high and take all of us with you?"
Zoe looked up and glanced at the man—who looked more like an astronaut than a technician—with complete calm. "It's just a simple timed bomb with a basic wire trigger. As long as you cut the correct wire, it'll be defused."
"Still, leave this to the professionals! Get out of here now!" another bomb tech added, trying to get Zoe to leave. "You're not only endangering yourself—you're risking everyone's lives!"
But Zoe just frowned slightly, visibly annoyed. Then she tilted her head, as if surprised by something. With a flick of her wrist, a small, gleaming blade appeared in her hand. Without hesitation, she sliced through the blue wire on the bomb.
The sharp snip of the severed wire rang out. The bomb disposal techs flinched, eyes wide in horror—but it was already too late to stop her.
This kind of wired bomb was notorious: if the wrong wire was cut, it would detonate instantly. And in most cases, bomb makers would intentionally choose the red wire as the real trigger wire—playing into the psychological tricks of bomb design.
But Zoe had gone straight for the blue wire. She didn't even seem to double-check it.
The bomb squad was certain it was about to explode. Internally, they cursed Zoe's recklessness.
"Everybody down!" the squad leader yelled, face pale. At once, everyone inside and outside the lab hit the floor.
But thirty seconds passed... and nothing happened.
Slowly, people began to lift their stunned faces. Then they heard Zoe's teasing voice. "Are you done hugging the floor yet?"
