"Congratulations," Shawn said, watching as Lara and Gavin returned with their boat full of fish.
Lara glanced over and quickly called out to Zoe, "Oh, what are you doing out here? Zoe, hurry up and take your man back to rest. If something happens again, how will his wound ever heal?"
Zoe shot Shawn a glance.
"No need. I heal fast," Shawn replied, clearly not wanting to go back.
Honestly, as long as Zoe was here, he just wanted to be wherever she was, doing whatever she was doing.
Just then, Nolan suddenly burst out of the house, running so fast that he crashed right into Shawn.
Shawn was still badly injured. Even standing was a struggle for him. If he fell now, his wound might split open again.
At the crucial moment, Zoe caught him just in time.
Shawn's tall frame ended up leaning against Zoe, which looked pretty awkward.
Nolan saw the whole thing, clapping his hands and circling around them, chanting, "So embarrassing. The girl's holding the boy. It's so embarrassing..."
Shawn didn't care at all.
But Zoe actually felt her face heat up. It was a feeling she'd never had before.
"Stand up on your own. If you fall again, I'm not helping you," Zoe said, pushing Shawn away before heading off to help Lara and Gavin with their chores.
Over the next few days, Lara and Gavin kept busy with farm work and turning the weaker fish into salted fish for easier selling and storage.
As their guest, Zoe naturally pitched in wherever she could.
Shawn's recovery was amazing. At first, he could only walk slowly, but soon he was able to help out with the work too.
Of course, Nolan was always around, finding new ways to pester them, but the two of them just kept getting more and more in sync.
It was almost like Zoe had become the strict mom and Shawn the protective dad. Honestly, they made the perfect couple.
Time flew by, and before they knew it, more than ten days had passed. During that time, Zoe and Shawn got closer.
They had gone from just putting on a show for others and keeping things polite behind closed doors, to sharing meals and even sleeping side by side. It was starting to look like they couldn't live without each other.
But even as she lived through it, Zoe hadn't realized how much her heart had changed.
"Zoe, Shawn. Come over here. There are so many beautiful shells," Nolan called out, running along the shore, scooping up shells with a grin.
Zoe and Shawn walked along the beach. The heavy burdens they once carried felt far away. In this little paradise, the outside chaos didn't matter. For once, they could just relax, as if they'd left everything behind.
"The sunset is gorgeous tonight," Shawn said, lifting his gaze to the horizon.
In the distance, the sun was slowly sinking, turning the whole sea a deep, blood-red.
Zoe followed his gaze, instantly captivated by the view. "Yeah, it really is," she murmured. It was so beautiful that it almost took her breath away.
"If we could just stay here forever, that wouldn't be so bad," Zoe said suddenly. As she spoke, memories of her years as a mercenary flashed through her mind.
"We could," Shawn replied without hesitation.
Zoe looked at him in surprise. "You'd really give up being the legendary warrior? And your place as the Ludwig family heir?"
"What about you?" Shawn shot back.
He didn't push her to reveal her secrets. He just hoped that one day, Zoe would tell him who she really was.
Zoe met his eyes. After a long pause, she said, "I have my own reasons I can't walk away from."
She couldn't let go for now. It wasn't just her own pride at stake. Behind her stood the Eminence Nexus, the entire mercenary corps, and the comrades who'd followed her for years. She couldn't abandon them.
This place was wonderful, but running away had never been Zoe's style. Facing things head-on was how she survived.
A flicker of regret flashed in Shawn's eyes. It seemed the little fox carried the whole world in her heart. She wasn't someone who could be tamed so easily.
Still, he was willing to give Zoe his whole heart, to support her, and let her shine in her own world, to become the true queen she was meant to be. "Come on. Let's catch up with Nolan. He's run off again."
"Alright," Zoe said.
Zoe and Shawn were living a quiet, hidden life for the time being, completely unaware that the world outside had been turned upside down.
