The moment she opened the door, she saw Sean and Charlie sitting on the couch, both of them sobbing their eyes out. The whole place felt suffocating. She'd never seen anything like that before.
She didn't care if Charlie was crying, but even Sean, who was always so steady, was in tears. Eunice thought, 'Does that mean the news about Zoe is true? And if so, does that mean Shawn is really gone too?'
Right then, Charlie slapped himself across the face. "It's all my fault. If I hadn't been so useless, Zoe wouldn't have had to stay behind. Now she's never coming back..."
"If anyone deserves to die, it's me. I'm her brother, and I failed to protect her. This is all on me," Sean said, his voice thick with guilt.
Both Sean and Charlie were overwhelmed with grief over Zoe's death, but even more so, they hated themselves for being so powerless.
Eunice rushed in and asked, "Sean, Charlie, I heard that Zoe... she's really gone? Is it true?"
Hearing that, Charlie completely lost it.
Sean just let his tears fall and said quietly, "It's true. Charlie and I were ambushed at the factory. Thankfully, Shawn and Zoe showed up in time. But to save us, they..."
Sean clenched his fists in frustration, trying to vent his helplessness.
"Sean, Charlie, don't beat yourselves up. This isn't your fault," Herbert tried to comfort them.
Jacob chimed in, "Yeah, who could've guessed Zoe would get mixed up with such a dangerous organization?"
Gerald gritted his teeth. "If only I'd been there, at least I could've helped them take out a few more of those bastards."
Bruce's face darkened. After all the trouble they'd gone through to bring Zoe back, she'd finally brought honor to the Evans family and even helped them get in with the Ludwig family.
But now he couldn't help but wonder if the Evans family was just cursed with bad luck.
Still, the fact that Zoe gave her own life to save his two sons really hit Bruce hard.
Bringing Zoe home hadn't been for nothing. When it mattered most, she still put her family first. It was just a shame her life was so short.
Clara stood aside, arms crossed, sneering, "Why so miserable? She got what she deserved. She showed off and stole Shawn from Eunice. Now she's paying the price.
"I think the whole mess with Sean and Charlie getting attacked was her fault in the first place. It's not clear who's dragging whom down yet."
"Mom, that's enough." Charlie shot to his feet, unable to hold back anymore.
Sean said, "Zoe has already gone. Can't you just let it go? She was your daughter too. Don't you feel even a little sad that she's dead?"
The brothers all turned to look at Clara.
Clara's lips twitched. "Of course, I'm sad. Who says I'm not?" she stammered, her eyes darting away, clearly not wanting to be confronted by her own family.
In Clara's eyes, no matter how impressive Zoe seemed, it was all just smoke and mirrors. It hadn't been proven at all. Zoe could never measure up to Eunice.
Eunice noticed every look and word from her brothers and parents, and honestly, she couldn't help feeling a little uneasy inside.
But Eunice couldn't even figure out her own feelings. She was happy Zoe was gone, but Shawn's death left her feeling strangely upset. If only Zoe had died and Shawn was still alive, that would've been perfect.
Sophia felt exactly the same way. She'd been waiting for that mysterious person to kill Zoe.
She'd even helped out a bit with the whole scheme against the big shots in Jelonsburg.
But what she never expected was that, while Zoe was dead, they'd end up killing Shawn too.
When Sophia got the news, she completely lost it, smashing everything in her room. Only after she'd vented did she finally pull out her phone and call that mysterious contact.
The phone rang several times before the other party finally picked up.
The second the call connected, Sophia couldn't hold back and yelled, "You liar. You broke your promise."
"Ms. White, what's that supposed to mean?" asked the other party.
Seeing he still wouldn't admit it, Sophia cut straight to the point. "We agreed that Zoe was the only one we'd go after. So why did you kill Shawn too?"
