"Nonsense, how could they not love you? We're family," Clara said gently, patting Eunice's hand.
But Eunice was determined to make Clara despise Zoe and keep targeting her. Otherwise, she would truly have no standing left in this family at all.
"Mom, you just don't get it," Eunice said, her tone dripping with admiration and jealousy. "Zoe and Shawn are now publicly recognized as a couple, and he even vowed to marry no one but her.
"I never thought she was so impressive. She can make Shawn fall for her just like that. Her manipulative skills are truly something else, Mom. I've always let you down. I really can't compare to her at all."
Clara couldn't help but wonder, 'Exactly. Shawn has seen every kind of woman, so why is he so devoted to Zoe? Could it be that Zoe is secretly manipulating him behind the scenes?'
Clara cared deeply about the Evans family. Thinking about Zoe's shady past and her questionable relationship with Shawn, Clara worried that Zoe's ambition might one day drag the family down. The more Clara dwelt on it, the more displeased she became with Zoe.
That evening, the entire Evans family gathered around the table. The chef had prepared a lavish spread. The table was overflowing with delicious dishes. It was almost as grand as the feasts the Evans family would have for major celebrations.
Eunice thought bitterly, 'When I joined the Marlowe Group, my family didn't celebrate me at all. But now, after Zoe's brush with death, she gets the royal treatment. Why is it always her? What about me?' Jealousy and resentment consumed her.
Clara couldn't stand watching her husband and sons fawning over Zoe. She slammed the table and snapped, "Have you all lost your minds? So what if she survived?
"Is that really something to make such a fuss about? It's not like she's ever done anything great for the Evans family. What's there to get so worked up over?"
"Mom's right," Eunice said. "We're truly glad Zoe had a narrow escape, but she really did make us worry."
"If you really cared about us, why didn't you call the moment you were safe? Zoe, don't tell me you still don't consider us family?" Her words were clearly meant to sow discord.
Zoe remained silent, refusing to respond. Bruce and the five brothers paid no mind to Eunice's scheming, not dwelling on her words at all.
Instead, Sean asked with concern, "Yeah, Zoe, tell us. How did you and Shawn manage to escape? And once you got out, why didn't you contact us? We could've come to help you, you know."
"When we heard something had happened to you, Sean and I were devastated. We couldn't stop crying. Look, my eyes are still swollen from all the tears," Charlie added.
The other brothers quickly chimed in, "We cried too."
Eunice was fuming. She wanted her brothers to see Zoe for the scheming bitch she really was. But damn it, it was like they'd all lost their minds. They couldn't think straight at all.
Zoe always replied with a shrug, "No big deal. We just drifted to some remote fishing village with no cell service, and then the tide came in."
"Where exactly is that fishing village? We absolutely have to thank them properly. If it weren't for them, how could we even have you here with us, alive and well?" Charlie said, wiping away his tears.
Sean downed his wine in one gulp and said, "Charlie's right. The villagers are our saviors. We must repay them handsomely."
Sean stood up, poured wine for both Zoe and himself, and said solemnly, "Zoe, I propose a toast to you. If you hadn't risked your life to save us, Charlie and I would be dead now."
