Zoe left her glass untouched, while Sean still drained his in one gulp.
Charlie also stood up, raising his glass. "Me too, Zoe. I also want to thank you. Back then, Sean and I had completely lost hope. If you hadn't given us that ray of hope, we wouldn't be standing here alive and well today."
"Sean, Charlie, you keep saying Zoe saved you, but you've never explained what actually happened that day," Herbert asked. "Isn't it time you finally shared the story with us?"
Jacob and Gerald nodded vigorously, their eyes alight with anticipation, clearly eager to hear every detail.
Sean glanced at Charlie. "Let Charlie tell you about it."
Eunice couldn't stand hearing them keep praising Zoe and couldn't help but cut in impatiently, "What's the big deal? Even without Zoe, you two would've escaped just fine."
But Charlie scolded, "Eunice, don't shoot your mouth off when you don't know the whole truth. Apologize to Zoe right now."
"Why should I apologize? Was I wrong?" Eunice said, feeling aggrieved.
Eunice wondered bitterly, 'I've worked so hard for this family's honor. Why can't I get any recognition? Meanwhile, Zoe, who hasn't brought any glory or benefit to the family, has everyone except Mom fawning over her.
'Is it just because she snagged Shawn? If I had the chance, I could win him over, too. I outshine her in every way. Shawn will choose me.
'Besides, she stole him from right under my nose. She's taken everything that should have belonged to me.'
Clara had truly heard enough. She slammed her fork down on the table with a loud clatter. "Enough. All you ever do is go on about Zoe. What has she ever actually contributed to this family?
"It's Eunice who's been working tirelessly for all of us.
"And need I remind you all of the trouble and embarrassing scandals Zoe has brought upon the Evans family?"
Clara's words instantly struck a chord with Eunice, who even managed to squeeze out a few crocodile tears. "Mom, it's only natural that everyone's paying more attention to Zoe now that she's back safe and sound. I- I'll try my best not to feel hurt."
Clara's heart ached even more at the sight. She reached out to gently wipe away Eunice's tears and said softly, "My dear, don't cry.
"The others may be under Zoe's spell, but not me. I know how hard you've worked. Remember, in this family, I'll always love you the most."
"Mom, Eunice, you think we're favoring Zoe? That's just because you have no idea how incredible she is," Charlie said firmly. "She's a powerhouse who can match Shawn, completely different from ordinary people like us."
Clara sneered, "Different? How so? She's got one head, two arms, and two legs just like the rest of us. Or does she have some special extras we don't know about?"
Charlie couldn't take it anymore. "Mom, if you don't know what really happened, please stop spouting nonsense. You have no idea what Sean and I went through.
"We didn't tell you because we didn't want to scare you. Now that Zoe's back and you're still making these snide remarks and misunderstanding her, I have no choice but to tell you how she fought through hell itself to save both me and Sean."
Charlie recounted how he and Sean had been hunted down and driven to the brink of despair. He went on to describe how Zoe and Shawn showed up against all odds to save everyone, only to vanish without a trace in the end.
"Everyone was armed with military-grade weapons. It was like a real battlefield. Has anyone here ever seen something like that in real life? I bet you've only ever seen it in movies." Charlie exclaimed.
Clara's eyes widened in shock, completely stunned by the vivid intensity of the scene Charlie described.
