Eunice couldn't hide her surprise either.
'How could the Evans family, a legitimate business empire, suddenly become the target of such vicious attacks?' he thought in shock. 'And to think it was this life-threatening.'
Charlie said, his voice trembling, "Sean took a knife to the gut, and that wound still hasn't healed. And me? I was ready to risk it all and fight those bastards to the death.
"Right then, Zoe showed up. Fearless of death, she charged straight into the enemy ranks and just slashed."
With every detail from Charlie, Clara flinched slightly in her seat. Outwardly composed, she was inwardly terrified by the bloody scenes Charlie painted in her mind. Eunice wasn't faring much better either.
Eunice always thought Zoe was just another ordinary genius like her—maybe a bit bolder, a bit more cunning.
But when Charlie described how Zoe had fearlessly slaughtered enemies on the battlefield, a cold terror gripped her heart. Eunice's mind reeled. 'Zoe has killed before. And not just one—she's killed so many.'
Charlie said with a shudder, "None of you saw it. There was a pool of blood on the ground, blinding crimson everywhere."
Eunice went completely pale. 'I always thought Zoe and I were equals,' she thought, 'but now I see how wrong I was. She's so much more ruthless than I am. She actually killed before.'
'Could I ever do what she did if I were in her shoes?' Eunice wondered. 'I'd probably be cowering in a corner, scared out of my wits. But if I had to face someone as ruthless as Zoe, would I even stand a chance?'
'No, absolutely not. I can't confront her head-on,' Eunice thought, her fingers trembling. 'Looks like I'll have to find another way to deal with Zoe from now on.'
Clara, visibly shaken, slammed her hand on the table. "Enough. Having a bloodthirsty monster in the family is nothing to be proud of. From now on, no one is to mention this ever again."
Clara stood up, glaring at Zoe with open contempt. "All the children in the Evans family are innocent and pure. We don't harbor cold-blooded killers like you under our roof. Pack your things and leave immediately."
Eunice couldn't help feeling pleased seeing how much Clara despised Zoe. 'Will I finally get to kick Zoe out?' she thought gleefully.
"That's enough. We're family. Why did you say that?" Bruce said sternly.
Clara glared at him. "After all the children I've borne for you, you dare snap at me? Is Zoe the only one who matters in your eyes?" Clara, in a fit of anger, burst into tears and swept upstairs.
"Dad, I'll go check on Mom," Eunice said. She didn't want to stick around and watch her brothers side with Zoe, so she used this as an excuse to slip away. The family dinner ended on a sour note after Clara stormed off in anger.
Zoe had no appetite to begin with, and now, she had even less desire to eat. Without a word, she pushed back her chair and walked out.
Bruce and his five sons exchanged uneasy glances. None of them had any appetite left to continue the meal.
Just then, Bruce's phone rang—an urgent call was coming through. Upon hearing this, Bruce immediately shot to his feet, his voice tight with disbelief. "Are you serious?"
"Dad, what's wrong?" Sean asked urgently, a note of concern in his voice.
Bruce cast a sharp glance at his sons and commanded into the phone, "Have the documents delivered to the Evans residence right away. I'll be waiting."
Ten minutes later, Bruce's aide arrived with a confidential dossier. Bruce took the file and immediately dismissed his aide. Then he immediately summoned all five of his sons to his study.
Bruce ordered, "Gerald, shut the door and stand guard outside. Make sure no one's listening in."
Gerald nodded and did as he was told.
"Dad, what's got you looking so serious?" Sean had never seen his father like this before and felt a bit worried.
The others had questions too, but none seemed as anxious or preoccupied as Sean.
Bruce looked at his sons, his expression serious, and asked solemnly, "Do you know what this is?"
"Dad, it's just a file folder. What big secret could it be?" Charlie said impatiently. "Just open it and show us. Stop keeping us in suspense."
"Yeah," Herbert and Jacob chimed in.
Bruce's expression turned grave. "I'm sure you've all noticed Zoe's extraordinary nature. According to our previous investigation, she was supposed to be just a girl raised in some small town.
"But look at everything she's done—does any of it seem possible for a girl from such a background, without proper upbringing, to achieve?"
A tense silence fell over Sean and his brothers as the weight of their father's words sank in.
