Hearing this, the brothers finally let out a sigh of relief, their tense shoulders relaxing at last. "Dad, you looked so serious just now. We thought you were about to—"
"What did you think? That I was going to settle the score with Zoe? Do I really seem that heartless to you?" said Bruce.
"Yeah," the brothers shot back, not giving Bruce an inch. Bruce was momentarily speechless, but ultimately chose not to respond.
Bruce called for a family meeting, so the brothers reluctantly went upstairs to inform Clara, Eunice, and Zoe.
Clara and Eunice were whispering maliciously about Zoe in hushed tones when they heard Bruce was calling a family meeting.
Clara immediately grasped Eunice's hand and reassured her in a low voice. "Don't worry. I'll make sure to tell your father all about Zoe's disgraceful deeds. Someone like her has no place in the Evans residence."
Eunice nodded, already scheming in her mind about how to drive Zoe out of the Evans residence.
When Clara and Eunice came downstairs, they were met with a solemn assembly. Bruce took his seat on the sofa, his five sons standing on either side.
With a stony expression, Clara pulled Eunice along and found them seats.
She started right away, "Bruce, I'm not here to discuss this with you. Ever since Zoe came back, we have had nothing but trouble. She's clearly the one stirring it all up. We can't keep her in our family anymore; she has to go."
"She has to go? And just where exactly do you think I should send her?" Bruce shot back.
"I don't care where you send her. Anyway, she's already ruining our family's future. There's absolutely no way she can stay." Clara was dead set on kicking Zoe out, completely oblivious to their grim expressions.
But Eunice, ever the observant onlooker, had picked up on their reactions.
'Why are Dad and brothers so against this decision?' she wondered. 'Did Zoe do something again?'
Eunice stepped forward with feigned concern and addressed her mother. "Mom, let's stop here and hear how Dad plans to handle this. I'm sure he knows what's best for us."
"Hmph," Clara scoffed, "If he had any sense at all, he never should have taken Zoe in." From her stance, it was crystal clear that Clara was dead set on kicking Zoe out.
"Shut up," Bruce roared. "She's your girl. How can you be so cold to Zoe? Can't you even tolerate her?"
Clara persisted stubbornly. "Eunice is the only child I acknowledge. As for Zoe? Who knows what wicked schemes she's brought back with her after growing up away from home all these years."
At her words, the brothers' faces darkened instantly.
Just then, Zoe finally descended the stairs with measured grace. "I'd love to know what wicked schemes I'm supposedly harboring, too."
Seeing Zoe, Clara scoffed coldly, "What? You think I'm wrong? After all these years out there, don't tell me you've never felt even a shred of resentment or hatred toward us? Don't even try to deny it. No one would believe you anyway."
Clara's words were met with Zoe's stony silence. The truth was that she didn't hate them. The reason was simple. Ever since she could stand on her own feet, she had had friends closer than family.
She had never felt lonely, nor lacked love. So, there was no need to hate them. Wallowing in self-pity and blaming others—that was the coward's way. However, as Firefox, the Queen of Mercenaries, she had never been cowardly. Hence, there was no hatred.
She settled all scores that very day. Nothing ever waited until tomorrow.
