Clara and Eunice's eyes widened in shock, horror filling their gaze. Disbelief completely overwhelmed them as the so-called truth they had just heard left them utterly dumbfounded, especially Clara.
Eunice was the first to regain her composure. After taking several sharp breaths, she fixed Zoe with a piercing stare and demanded, "Zoe, you're so amazing because you know some big shot? He or she taught you to be so incredible, right?
"But why would a big shot bother with you? People like that never help for free—they always want something in return, right? What exactly did you have to trade for your current success?"
On the surface, Eunice's words sounded perfectly reasonable.
After all, in a place like that, there were only two kinds of people, those who reached the top and those stuck at the bottom. And Zoe was just a young girl.
They didn't believe that she could possibly have made it to the top.
If Zoe managed to survive, she must have cozied up to some big shot.
Eunice never said anything outright nasty, but every question she asked was loaded, implying Zoe had only gotten stronger and survived by using shameless means.
Everyone who heard her couldn't help but picture sordid scenes in their minds.
A girl with no background, suddenly powerful and well-connected? There was only one explanation. She must have slept her way to the top.
"Disgusting." At that, Clara spat out, her face twisted in revulsion as if she might vomit at any moment.
Noticing the increasingly complicated expressions on her father's and brothers' faces, Eunice knew her scheme had worked.
She immediately put on a look of fake sympathy and cast a pitying glance at Zoe. "Zoe, let's just let bygones be bygones, shall we? From now on, why don't we try to get along as a real family?"
"No way," Clara snapped, her face cold and stern. "We can't keep her in our home. She's a disgrace. Trading favors to get ahead? Absolutely shameful.
"She must be kicked out. The Evans family has plenty of children; we won't miss this one. Bruce, say something. She has such ulterior motives. Are you really going to stand by and watch her tarnish our name?"
Bruce didn't believe Clara's suspicions for a moment. Zoe might seem aloof, but these past days have shown she was warm-hearted beneath that cool exterior.
Besides, if someone as exceptional as Shawn was interested in her, she must be truly remarkable. A girl like that would never engage in promiscuous behavior.
Bruce declared, "Enough. As the head, I hereby announce that from this day forward, Zoe is the rightful heiress of the Evans family. Should anyone dare to use her past to humiliate or disrespect her again, they will face immediate expulsion from the house."
Bruce took an uncharacteristically firm stance this time. Even Clara was visibly shaken by his show of authority.
Eunice had initially planned to make trouble for Zoe, but seeing that most of the family now sided with her, she realized that if she pushed any further, she might be the one getting kicked out of the house.
'Fine,' she thought. 'Revenge is a dish best served cold.' She would bide her time. Sooner or later, the perfect opportunity would present itself.
"Enough. We're done here," Bruce said, choosing not to press Zoe any further.
After all, having the Evans family's long-lost daughter turn out to be a small-town girl was far better than her being some slum-bred runaway. That settled it.
Once the rest of the Evans family had dispersed, only Clara and Eunice remained in the living room.
"Mom, don't be upset. It's not worth getting sick over," Eunice said with feigned concern.
"How can I not be angry?" Clara retorted. "Having a murderer who's so morally tainted living under our roof? I can't even sleep at night.
"If this ever gets out, we'll be the laughingstock of Jelonsburg. And as for you, Eunice, with Zoe's disgrace hanging over you, how will you ever marry well?"
