'And every one of them has sent money to this young woman. Just her connections alone are enough to scare the hell out of me. Could she be some kind of hidden big shot?'
Not wanting to risk offending Zoe, the manager immediately vouched for her. He said, "Let me make this clear: Ms. Evans obtained these funds through entirely legitimate means. There is no evidence of theft or any illegal activity.
"If anyone continues to make baseless accusations against her, I will have to file a police report and press defamation charges."
Eunice had been waiting for everyone to condemn Zoe, but to her shock, Zoe cleared her name effortlessly and even earned a fanboy.
Seeing the auction manager going to great lengths to help Zoe, his attitude nothing short of fawning, Eunice was confused. She wondered if Zoe had some powerful backers they didn't know about.
At the manager's words, the crowd fell silent, wary of legal trouble. Though doubts nagged at them, no one dared speak up.
The manager said, "Ms. Zoe Evans, we'll swipe your card now to complete the transaction." Not wanting the commotion to continue, the manager quickly swiped the card and respectfully handed it back to Zoe with both hands.
Zoe took the card and said, "Hand over the items."
The manager immediately had the two items brought over and placed before Zoe.
Without another word, Zoe turned to leave.
Just then, Eunice grabbed Zoe's arm and said, "Zoe, don't leave yet. We haven't even met Kestrel!"
Zoe said, "I'm not interested." She thought, 'If I want to see Kestrel, I will just look in the mirror.'
"Zoe, now that you bought this weapon for me, our family finally has the chance to meet Kestrel! Won't you come with us?" Eunice said sweetly, though her real intention was to get Zoe to hand over the weapon to her.
Zoe completely ignored the bait. She turned to leave without another word.
Eunice grew anxious and quickly turned to Clara.
Clara immediately stepped in front of Zoe, blocking her way. She snapped, "Stop right there! Didn't you hear what Eunice just said? That weapon is wasted on you. You wouldn't even know what to do with it.
"Just hand it over to Eunice, so she can meet Kestrel and bring honor to our family."
Zoe turned her head with a cold, mocking sneer and said, "You want it? Fine. Give me 160 million."
Clara and Eunice were utterly dumbfounded on the spot. They thought, 'If we had that much money, would we have just let Zoe take the weapon?'
Eunice said, "Zoe, we're family! How could you say that to Mom?"
Clara snapped, "I'm your mother, so I decide. This weapon goes to Eunice. She'll apprentice under Kestrel and become the greatest master weaponsmith, famous and successful. One day, you'll be crawling to Eunice for favors. Consider this your advance investment."
Zoe thought, 'She managed to put such a refined spin on stealing. Impressive.'
Eunice quickly piped up after Clara. She said, "Zoe, of course I'd never leave you out in the cold. Once I become Kestrel's apprentice, I'll prioritize making weapons for Shawn's army."
Putting on a show of feigned reluctance, she added, "Well, if you insist, I could even craft a custom-made masterpiece just for you.
"But honestly, as Shawn's future wife, you'll be far too refined for such crude battlefield matters, won't you?"
Everyone nodded in agreement. They thought, 'Once Zoe married into the Ludwig family, she'd surely be living a high life as a wealthy socialite. Why would she even need a weapon?'
Zoe fixed Eunice with an icy stare.
Eunice said with feigned admiration, "You're the truly remarkable one, Zoe. You've already secured your future so quickly.
"I don't have your talent for attracting distinguished men like Shawn, which is why I have to focus on becoming strong and independent myself. You'll support my aspirations, won't you?"
Clara strode straight to the weapon case and declared, "Don't feel bad, Eunice! I'm putting my foot down. This weapon is yours. You're going to be Kestrel's apprentice!"
