Hearing this, Eunice was ecstatic. She thought, 'With Clara backing me up, getting this weapon will be a breeze.'
Just as Clara reached for the box, Zoe swiftly snatched it away before Clara could touch it.
Zoe's action instantly set Clara off. She glared at Zoe and snapped, "Zoe, what's that supposed to mean? You're part of this family, too. What's wrong with giving Eunice a gift?
"Don't you realize Eunice is the pride of our family? Once she becomes Kestrel's apprentice, that 160 million will be paid back to you in no time.
"Eunice is going to be the next international weapons master. When she sells even a single weapon, it'll fetch a fortune. Does she care about that little bit of money?
"What a short-sighted creature! No wonder you're not fit for a decent occasion."
Clara's public belittling of Zoe while praising Eunice made Eunice feel even more smug. But the five Evans brothers couldn't stand it any longer.
Charlie was the first to speak up for Zoe. He said, "Mom, that's not fair. Zoe's just as outstanding. She's accomplished a lot and she's a great person too."
Sean stepped in with a fair judgment. He said, "Both of my sisters are outstanding, but we need to draw the line. Zoe bought this weapon, it's her call on how to handle it.
"Even as a family, we can't decide for her. Unless you paid for it, you don't get a say."
Clara was shocked that all her sons would defy her for Zoe. This fueled her resentment and made her dislike Zoe even more. She snapped, "What is this, a mutiny? If it weren't for me, Zoe wouldn't even exist in this world.
"Now I'm just asking for one measly weapon. Zoe, are you giving it to Eunice or not?"
Zoe remained silent, her face icy.
Taking Zoe's silence as consent, Clara lunged for the box again.
Not to be outdone, Eunice also made a grab at it.
The five Evans brothers couldn't take it anymore and immediately stepped forward to block Clara and Eunice.
"Zoe, must you stand in Eunice's way to success? How can you be so vicious?" Clara shrieked.
Eunice's eyes burned with hidden malice. She thought, 'Zoe just can't stand to see me excel. That's why she keeps obstructing me at every turn.'
Feigning understanding, Eunice said, "Mom, let it go. Even without the weapon, I believe my abilities are enough to impress Kestrel and convince him to take me as his apprentice."
Although Eunice tried to make herself sound resolute, now that this whole scene had played out, she couldn't escape becoming the subject of judgmental glances. However, more people's criticisms were directed at Zoe.
Among the hushed whispers, Zoe finally spoke up, "Kestrel won't take you. "After all, Kestrel was none other than Zoe herself. And there was no way Zoe would ever accept someone like Eunice as her apprentice.
Eunice's expression instantly darkened at Zoe's words. She turned to Clara and whined, "Mom, look how Zoe's talking to me! How could she say that?"
Clara trembled with rage. She snapped, "Zoe, you abomination! How could I have given birth to something like you? Can't stand to see Eunice succeed, or the Evans family thrive, is that it?"
Eunice immediately burst into tears, putting on her most pitiful act. She said, "Zoe, even if you're jealous of my talent, how could you say such things? You're being such a bully to me."
The five Evans brothers exchanged uneasy glances, at a loss as to whom to support.
Zoe didn't fall for Eunice's act for a moment. She stood her ground, refusing to give an inch.
Clara grabbed Eunice's hand and huffed, "Eunice, don't pay Zoe any mind. Just because she says it won't happen doesn't make it true. She's not Kestrel. Since when does she have the final say in his decisions?"
Zoe had no intention of dragging this out any longer. Clutching the box, she turned to leave.
Clara, mistaking Zoe's leaving for fear, stubbornly blocked her path, determined to see her humiliated. At that moment, she had completely forgotten that Zoe was her flesh and blood.
Eunice felt a surge of vindication. She thought, 'As long as Clara can keep Zoe from leaving, I'll make a complete fool of her soon enough.'
Then she challenged, "Zoe, what if I get Kestrel to take me as his apprentice? Care to make a bet?"
Clara immediately caught Eunice's drift and backed her up. She chimed in, "Exactly! You claimed Kestrel wouldn't show up, but didn't he? If you're wrong again this time, what then?"
"How about handing over that weapon you bought?" Eunice cut in, her eyes gleaming with greed for the weapon.
Zoe smirked coldly, pulled out her phone, and sent off a text with decisive taps.
Clara sneered, "Putting on an act, are you? I bet you're just too scared to take the bet. Admit defeat now and hand the weapon over to Eunice. Maybe then I'll still consider you my daughter."
As she spoke, she lifted her chin as if bestowing a favor.
But Zoe couldn't have cared less.
At that very moment, the auction manager, still on-site, received a text notification.
Some people at the scene couldn't help but start murmuring, "It's like Zoe has a direct line to the auction manager. The moment she texts, he gets it instantly. This is hilarious.
"Everyone knows the manager mainly deals with Kestrel. At this rate, it's starting to look like Zoe is Kestrel herself."
Clara immediately sneered and shot back, "As if I don't know what my daughter is made of? Zoe, Kestrel? What a joke! I gave birth to her, and I know her best.
"She's just putting on a show with that fake text, trying to make excuses for herself."
The manager's brow furrowed as he finished reading. He said, "Kestrel just messaged me."
Clara had paid a hefty sum to bribe the manager, insisting he find a way to introduce Kestrel. So when she heard what the manager said, she immediately assumed Kestrel had finally agreed to take Eunice as his apprentice.
Barely able to contain her excitement, Clara rushed forward. She shot Zoe a side glance dripping with utter disdain and asked, "Well? Is Kestrel going to meet Eunice?"
Eunice was excited, too. After all, this was a pivotal moment that could change everything for her.
Bruce and the Evans brothers felt the same way. They all hoped Eunice would become Kestrel's apprentice. If she succeeded, the Evans family's status would soar to new heights.
But the next second, the manager's words froze everyone in place.
He announced, "Mrs. Evans, my deepest apologies. I've just received word from Kestrel. He has already left, and he specifically named Eunice as someone he refuses to take as his apprentice."
The words dropped with a sharp impact. Every pair of eyes in the room, wide with shock and disbelief, couldn't help but swivel toward Zoe, who had just sent a text message.
