"What?" Gerald's expression changed abruptly. "No way, Zoe. I'm staying to have your back."
But Zoe replied with calm certainty, "You're no match for them. Go."
Hearing their conversation, Charlie immediately jumped out of the car. "Them? Who are they? Zoe, if you're in danger, our whole family will stand by you. You're not alone anymore. You've got us now."
His voice was so loud that everyone in the other car heard him too.
None of them would leave, all choosing to stay out of concern for Zoe.
Suddenly, Eunice blurted out in panic, "Zoe, who the hell did you piss off? Are you trying to get us all killed?"
Clara still harbored resentment toward Zoe for public humiliation and for angering her husband. At that moment, seeing Zoe get into trouble, she finally had the perfect outlet for her pent-up resentment.
"Zoe," Clara demanded, "tell me the truth. Did you come back because you caused some major trouble out there and needed a safe haven? What kind of disaster have you dragged the Evans family into this time?
Let me make this clear. The Evans family was perfectly fine without you. It's only since you came back that disaster after disaster has struck!
"Think about it. Sean and Charlie only got into trouble last time because of you, didn't they?" Clara jabbed a finger at Zoe, her anger rising. "You always bring bad luck to this family. Get out! I don't have a daughter like you."
Before Zoe could even explain, Clara bombarded everyone with a barrage of curses, leaving them all stunned.
"Just go. I'll handle this myself," Zoe said to Charlie and the others, deliberately ignoring Clara.
"No way! Last time, you risked your life for us. This time, we're standing with you thick and thin," Charlie declared.
Sean stepped out of the car. "Me too."
Herbert and Jacob exchanged a glance, neither could bear to leave Zoe behind. Without hesitation, they both stepped out of the car, one after another.
Herbert and Jacob exchanged a glance and declared firmly, "We're staying too."
All five brothers insisted on staying for Zoe, sending Eunice into a fit of jealous rage.
'My brothers used to always put my safety first,' Eunice thought bitterly. 'But now, all they see is Zoe, as if I don't even exist anymore.
'Damn that Zoe!' Eunice seethed inwardly. 'Someone, anyone—just kill her!' In her mind, Eunice seethed with rage, silently cursing. It seemed that only by cursing Zoe like this could Eunice feel a little better inside.
"Get back, all of you! If that damned brat wants to die, let her rot! Why are you still hanging around? Are you all trying to get yourselves killed along with her?" Clara screeched.
Clara thought, 'These disobedient brats! That wild girl has corrupted every last one of them.'
One of the brothers said firmly, "Mom, we're staying. Zoe's suffered enough out there all these years. Now that she's home, we can't let her down again. The brothers all chimed in loudly, insisting they must make amends to Zoe."
A mocking voice cut through the tension. "Stop arguing," the villain sneered. "None of you are leaving today!"
Armed men suddenly swarmed out, encircling Zoe and her companions, leaving them no way out. The leader has finally revealed his true colors.
The Evans family had all been following recent news reports and knew that a group of foreign operatives had been stirring up trouble in Clusia.
Among them were even a few so-called "legendary warriors" from foreign lands. And this is the guy called Hawk who's been making the most trouble around here.
Just then, Hawk glared coldly at Zoe. "You're a legendary warrior, Shawn's woman, aren't you?" Hawk sneered.
Zoe remained silent. Zoe recognized him instantly. He was a high-ranking officer from that notorious rogue state. He was notorious for pillaging and committing every crime imaginable. His bounty was still listed on the assassination board to that day.
'The bounty's so low, not even my mercenaries would bother with it—let alone me,' Zoe thought disdainfully.
