Just as Bruce was about to back down and have Zoe hand over the treasure to smooth things over, Hawk and his gang across from them burst into mocking laughter.
Hawk sneered, "Hear that, boys? This bitch has lost her damn mind, threatening to take me out? Where'd she get the balls?"
One of Hawk's men sneered, "Probably Shawn. Too bad he's out of reach and can't help her now."
Hawk and his men took turns mocking and taunting, every word laced with contempt.
Bruce finally stepped out of the car. "Zoe, you should know when to yield. Your life comes first. Since you're going to be Shawn's woman, you should at least understand this basic principle, right?"
Eunice thought gleefully to herself, 'Perfect! As long as Dad, the head of the family, is willing to throw Zoe under the bus, there's still a slim chance the rest of us might survive.'
"Apologize, and hand the treasure over to them," Bruce commanded.
Zoe didn't turn around or say a word. Her silence said it all.
Charlie Evans shouted defiantly, "No way! We can't surrender the treasure or back down! If we do, we won't just be shaming the Evans family—we'd be disgracing all of Clusia!"
Though Sean and the others stayed silent, they all shared the same conviction.
They thought, 'Our own pride doesn't matter—what matters today is the honor of Clusia.
'If we back down now, we'll be condemned by our countrymen for the rest of our lives.'
Bruce said coldly to Zoe, "Things can be replaced, but if you lose your life, you have nothing."
"All of you, leave. I'll handle this alone," Zoe said coldly.
But Zoe's arrogance and refusal to back down infuriated Bruce. Still, remembering she was his daughter, he sighed inwardly and stepped forward, ready to swallow his pride and apologize on her behalf.
At that moment, he would do anything to keep his family alive.
Bruce said, "Gentlemen, my child is young and didn't know any better. Name your terms and we'll do everything we can. I beg you, please, just let my family go."
Bruce's groveling only provoked raucous laughter from Hawk and his gang. Their scorn for Zoe and the Evans family deepened instantly.
"Aren't all Clusians supposed to be tough and fearless? Looks to me like that's just talk," Hawk sneered.
The others chimed in with sneers.
"Shawn's the only exception in Clusia, but the rest are just bugs we'll crush on dust."
"Without Shawn, they're nothing! Just a bunch of sickly cowards from Clusia!"
Those insults were so vile that even Bruce clenched his fists in rage.
But as the head of the family, duty-bound to protect his loved ones, he had no choice but to swallow his pride and endure the humiliation.
"Zoe, hand over the treasure. That's an order," Bruce commanded.
"Zoe, just hand it over already. Are you really going to disobey Dad? We don't want to die because of your selfish stubbornness," Eunice said as she got out of the car, making it clear she thought Zoe's recklessness was dragging the whole family down.
Hearing this, Hawk and his gang burst into even more savage laughter. One of them jeered, "Look at that. They're turning on each other. How hilarious!"
Another sneered, "Why not let them tear each other apart? Now that would be a show worth watching."
Hearing his companions' words, Hawk jabbed a finger at Bruce and snarled, "Kill her yourself, and we'll spare your whole family."
Bruce frowned. He was indeed dissatisfied with the way Zoe was handling this, but she was still his daughter after all. 'How could I possibly do something as unthinkable as killing my own flesh and blood?' he thought.
But Clara said sharply, "Zoe, if you truly consider yourself part of the Evans family, you should do the right thing—sacrifice yourself to save the rest of us."
"Zoe, I know this is asking too much," Eunice pleaded, her voice dripping with false concern. "But I really don't want to die. At a time like this, shouldn't you be the one to step up and sacrifice yourself for Dad and the brothers?"
