"Rick," she pleaded, "that's not even all of it. I came to you because I really need you to stand up for me." Rick immediately ordered his men to bring Sophia to him.
As Sophia walked through the gate, she deliberately sneered at the two guards and said, "Next time, watch who you're messing with. I may be easygoing, but don't expect others to be so lenient."
Rick wasn't alone in his office; several of his old comrades were also present.
They were all senior officers from Shawn's military unit—essentially, his former commanding officers.
All of them were old comrades-in-arms with Rick, so they naturally shared a close bond.
When Sophia tearfully recounted her grievances in front of everyone, accusing Zoe of using underhanded tricks to steal Shawn, the old veterans bristled with indignation, their faces reddening, mustaches practically quivering in fury.
One of the elders shook his head and muttered, "Shawn never seemed like a fool to me. How did he end up falling for a honey trap like that?"
"He's still too young—no self-control at all. The moment a temptress shows up, he's completely bewitched. How can we let this slide?"
"We must never allow them to be together. If that temptress leads Shawn astray, she'll corrupt the entire unit's discipline and morale!"
Rick slapped the table and asked Sophia, "Are you sure Shawn broke off the engagement because Zoe seduced him?"
"Rick, you know our families have always had this marriage arrangement. If Shawn really had any objections, he would have spoken up long ago. So why is he only backing out now that Zoe has shown up?" Sophia accused.
"Since that's the case, I cannot simply stand by and watch," said Rick, his tone resolute.
Rick addressed his old comrades, "You've all heard it. Sophia is the jewel of our White family, beloved by all. Now that she's been wronged, I expect you to stand with me and teach that boy Shawn a proper lesson."
"Yeah. We'll always be with you, Rick."
"Exactly! We must discipline Shawn properly. If he's already fallen for one temptress, what's to stop a second or third from coming along? Before long, he might even betray his oath and country."
"This must be stopped at all costs!"
The elders unanimously agreed that Shawn had acted unjustly and were determined to confront him and demand that he make things right. They wanted to rein him in before it was too late.
Sophia stood to the side, watching and listening with smug satisfaction.
Sophia thought, 'Zoe, so what if you've won Shawn's heart? You two are completely mismatched. With everyone against you, there's no way you'll last. In the end, Shawn will be mine—no matter what.'
With this thought, a smug smile crept onto Sophia's face.
'I can already picture myself snuggled blissfully in Shawn's arms,' Sophia thought to herself, her heart swelling with satisfaction.
Zoe sat in the cab, reflecting on everything that had happened lately.
It was clear too many people were targeting her. If she didn't identify who these enemies were, it could complicate her future missions.
'I need to have Medusa find out exactly who's after my life,' Zoe thought.
Suddenly, with a screech of brakes, a military jeep cut in front of the taxi and came to a halt.
The taxi driver couldn't help blurting out, "Oh my god, that's one hell of a license plate. Miss, they're clearly here for you, aren't they? You should get out here. I can't risk driving you any further."
Zoe knew only military vehicles in Clusia bore such distinctive license plates.
'Looks like someone from the military is looking for me. Did Shawn send them?' Zoe thought.
Zoe paid the driver and stepped out of the cab.
A sharp-eyed officer swiftly alighted from the jeep. He approached Zoe and said, "Ms. Evans, I'm here on orders from the unit commanders to invite you to the base to discuss official business. Please come with us."
