With all eyes on her, Eunice felt flustered. She could only cast a pleading glance at Sophia.
Sophia couldn't believe how easily Eunice caved under pressure—just a little intimidation and she let things slip. Trying to smooth things over, Sophia said, "Rick, don't scare a young lady like this. She must have just been frightened into talking nonsense."
Eunice nodded, her voice trembling. "Y-Yeah, I was so scared I misspoke. The truth is, Zoe was so desperate to marry Shawn and gain wealth and status that she used the company to commit these illegal acts."
Sophia nodded. "Exactly—that's how it was."
Rick frowned, "She did all this just to make herself worthy of becoming a Ludwig?"
"What else?" Eunice scoffed. "She only got close to Mr. Ludwig by playing dirty tricks. Otherwise, how could someone like her ever win his favor?"
The crowd nodded in agreement. Zoe didn't deserve Shawn.
As no one pressed her slip-up, Eunice exhaled a breath of relief.
Sophia turned to the crowd and announced, "Eunice and her family truly played a key role in helping Shawn get rid of Zoe the wretch. So, I promised Eunice that I'd look out for her family."
"Rightfully so," a voice said. "Zoe is nothing but trouble for Shawn. With her gone, he's got nothing but clear skies ahead."
Another chimed in, "Yeah, the White and Ludwig families really should hurry up with the marriage alliance, before some other gold digger shows up."
Noticing everyone was on the same page, Rick turned to Sophia and said, "You've heard everyone's wishes. We all hope you and Shawn can get married soon. What do you say?"
Sophia was dying to marry Shawn, but outwardly she had to maintain a proper lady's demeanor. "I'll follow whatever you decide," she said demurely.
'Good to see Sophia knows what matters,' Rick thought, highly satisfied. He turned to the crowd and declared, "As leaders, we must care about subordinates' marriages. I'll speak to Shawn myself to set a date early."
Sophia was overjoyed. Just as she was about to shower the elders with more flattering words, the door was violently kicked open. After a stunned moment, she shrieked, "Who are you?"
Sophia didn't recognize these intruders, but the business tycoons in the corner were instantly stunned.
"They are..." and tycoon murmured.
Another echoed, "Yeah, they're."
The newcomers were all heavyweight figures in the investment banking world—the kind who routinely handled multi-billion-dollar deals. But what truly set them apart was their other identity: members of Eminence Nexus.
Sophia noticed several elders whispering among themselves. Though their voices were low, she still caught a few words. Figuring these new people had bad vibes and weren't the harmless type, she decided to stay out of it.
But Eunice had zero chills. Eager to impress the Whites, she blocked the newcomers and snapped, "Who the hell are you? Know where you are? Know who's standing behind me? Leave now, or I'll call security."
Sophia lowered her head and quietly retreated a few steps, putting distance between herself and Eunice.
The newcomers' faces darkened instantly. One of them said coldly, "Your White family is really something else. To dare disregard even us—who could possibly command your respect?"
Eric quickly stepped forward to clarify, "Gentlemen, please don't misunderstand. This young lady isn't a White. Whatever she's done has nothing to do with us."
'Are these guys really that important?' Eunice panicked. But the words were already out; no matter how dangerous things got, she had to hold her ground.
She raised her voice defiantly, "Even if you're somebody, show some manners. This is the Whites' party—act like guests."
Sophia thought Eunice was nothing but an idiot. But there was nothing she could do to fix the situation. She just had to wait and see how things would play out.
"You Whites sure puts on airs. Even an outsider dared to speak for you," one of the newcomers sneered.
"What a suck-up," someone scoffed.
Eunice's temper flared instantly. "Who's cursing from the shadows? If you've got the guts, come out and say it to my face!"
The newcomers at the door stepped aside, making way as the speaker strode confidently into the room.
Instantly, the room erupted into chaos—glasses shattered, chairs toppled over. Everyone wore identical expressions of utter shock, as if they'd seen a ghost.
Eunice's voice quivered, her eyes wide with unconcealable terror. "Why are you here? Weren't you supposed to be locked up?"
Sophia's face turned deathly pale. She had thought that even Firefox would finally face justice under Clusia's laws this time. But reality proved far harsher than she had hoped.
Rick stepped forward. "How dare you show your face here? Did you break out using illegal means?"
Another chimed in, "Absolutely! Arrest her immediately!"
'Isn't all the evidence already ironclad?' Sophia thought, baffled. She scoffed, "You're too arrogant. You think you can flout the law as if you're still overseas?"
Zoe stood there, remaining silent.
Rick stepped forward with an icy expression. Convinced that Zoe's silence meant she was guilty, he snapped, "Zoe, since you've confessed, you should face justice. Turn yourself in now, or we won't go easy on you."
Zoe sneered, "And just how exactly do you plan to 'not go easy' on me?"
Rick leaned in and whispered something to his aide, who discreetly signaled several security chiefs. They quickly formed a tight circle around Zoe.
One of them snapped, "Will you go to the authorities on your own, or do we have to escort you there by force?"
"Arrest her. She must have escaped," Eunice declared with sudden conviction, as if she'd just uncovered irrefutable proof.
The men behind Zoe seemed eager to speak up for her, but she raised her hand to stop them—their clout clearly wasn't enough.
As Zoe remained silent, the others grew even more convinced she had illegally escaped, and it would only bring her a harsher punishment.
Noticing that everyone was against Zoe, Eunice deliberately stepped forward, feigning concern. "Zoe, you've already done something wrong. You should hurry back and accept your punishment. Stop dragging the family down with you. Do you know how hard it is for us to clean up your mess?"
Instantly, the crowd burst into whispers.
"How come the Evans sisters are so different?"
"I heard they're twins. Eunice really knows her place, but Zoe is nothing but trouble, always causing headaches for the family."
"Yeah, they say people who are born but never raised right turn out savage—couldn't be more true."
"This is going to get interesting."
