"Home," Shawn said simply.
'Home—what a loaded word,' Zoe thought. 'But where is my home, really? The Evans residence? No, that place was never truly home to me. Sooner or later, I'll have to leave anyway.'
Shawn said as he drove, "This is my responsibility. I'll handle it."
She shot him a skeptical look. "How do you plan to handle this? The White family has deep roots, and their business is tightly intertwined with the Ludwig family's. Pulling out now would mean huge losses for your side."
She gave a wry smile. "And those Elders in the military, all of them see me as some femme fatale out to ruin you, clamoring to have me banished. Do you really have what it takes to defy your old commanders?"
Shawn said firmly, "Leave this to me. I have my own plan."
Shawn didn't take Zoe to the military base or the Evans residence. Instead, he drove her to his own apartment in the city center.
"Did the Ludwig family get this place for you? It's kinda tiny, isn't it?" Zoe said while she checked the place.
Shawn replied, "It's assigned by the military."
Zoe arched an eyebrow playfully and teased, "So, have you ever kept a secret lover here?" With no one else around, she grew bolder, tracing slow circles on Shawn's chest with her finger.
Shawn's breath grew ragged as he seized Zoe's hand. "I'll go cook," he muttered.
Zoe flopped onto the couch with a grin. "What, you actually expected me to cook?"
A faint smile tugged at Shawn's lips as he willingly headed to the kitchen to prepare their meal.
Zoe sat on the sofa, lost in thought as she watched Shawn bustling around. When she heard that he had nearly broken her out of prison, she admitted being deeply moved.
She knew if she was in danger, her companions would risk their lives to save her. But Shawn was different.
Shawn was a disciplined man—not exactly by the book, but always principled. That he would put her above his military honors was nothing short of extraordinary.
It showed that Shawn truly trusted her. Being genuinely cared for was not bad at all.
A faint smile played on Zoe's lips. Perhaps she was just too tired, and she ended up dozing off right there on the couch.
When Shawn came over with a plate of pasta, he found Zoe fast asleep, looking absolutely adorable. Unable to bring himself to wake her, he simply settled quietly beside her.
Perhaps feeling cold, Zoe shivered and curled into herself. As Shawn was about to get up to grab her a blanket, she instinctively shifted closer. Sensing the warmth radiating from him, she unconsciously burrowed into his arms, seeking comfort.
Shawn froze, his hands awkwardly suspended in the air, unsure how to react. Only when Zoe settled into a comfortable position did she drift back into a deep slumber.
Shawn finally relaxed, wrapping Zoe tightly in his arms. "Just sleep," he murmured, holding her close. "When you wake up, everything will be alright."
When Zoe woke up in the bedroom, she stepped out to find Shawn was already gone. Breakfast was waiting on the table, along with a note from him: [Something came up at the base. Had to leave.]
Zoe slipped the note into her pocket and sat down for breakfast. Just then, her phone buzzed. Seeing the caller ID, she immediately stepped out onto the balcony to take the call.
"Boss, all the online backlash vanished overnight," Medusa reported.
Zoe narrowed her eyes and asked, "Who was behind this?"
"Our investigation suggests it was Shawn," Medusa replied.
"It was him," Zoe murmured, a faint smile playing on her lips. "Besides quashing the rumors, what else did he do?"
"See for yourself, Boss. There's a clarification video clearing up all the rumors," Medusa said, then couldn't help but tease, "Boss, you're not actually falling for Shawn, are you? Don't forget why you came to Clusia."
