Shawn personally went to the Marlowe Group to pick Zoe up from work. Seeing him waiting outside, Zoe raised an eyebrow in surprise and teased, "Mr. Ludwig, since when do you have so much free time?"
Shawn opened the car door for Zoe, shielding her head with his hand in a gentlemanly and tender manner.
This only made Zoe even more suspicious. As Shawn got in and reached over to fasten her seatbelt, she quickly grabbed his hand and asked, "It's weird. What do you need my help with this time?"
Realizing he'd been seen through, Shawn admitted frankly, "In a couple of days, top superiors will be coming down to review the troops' training performance."
Zoe raised an eyebrow. "I'm just a lowly grunt. This is way above my pay grade, no?"
"I want you to come with me," Shawn said. After this crisis, his superiors began to question the woman he had chosen as his wife. While Clusia advocated free love, military regulations were a different matter altogether.
Zoe frowned, "You're not saying this inspection is actually targeting me, are you?"
Shawn didn't want to hide anything from Zoe. He looked her in the eye and said honestly, "That's part of it, but mainly, I want to show them I was right to choose you."
Zoe looked at Shawn, his eyes unwavering. She knew that he clearly wasn't joking. "How well do you really know me? What makes you so sure you're not making a mistake?" she challenged, her voice edged with skepticism.
She hadn't forgotten her original intentions, and their backgrounds were so incompatible. She doubted that they could really make it in the end.
"Let me think about it," Shawn sighed. Noticing Zoe's reluctance, he didn't press further and personally drove her back to the Evans residence.
Zoe stared at the Evans residence, making no move to get out of the car. She turned to Shawn. "So you're just dropping me off here without even asking if I want to go in?"
Shawn said gently, "If you didn't want to come, you would have said so on the way. They're your family. You'll have to face them eventually."
Zoe had been avoiding all contact with the Evans family lately, convinced they'd come begging her to show mercy to Eunice but this time, she wasn't about to relent.
"I'll go in with you," Shawn insisted. Since the incident, he hadn't shown his face to the Evans family; they likely assumed he and Zoe had broken up. This visit was his way of making it clear: their relationship was rock-solid.
Zoe opened the car door and got out. "You don't need to go in. The house is probably a complete mess right now. It'll just get on your nerves."
Shawn ignored Zoe's advice and insisted on accompanying her inside. Seeing his determination, Zoe didn't argue further, and the two entered the Evans residence together.
The Evans residence was just as Zoe had expected—somber and lifeless. Clara sat blankly on the sofa, barely reacting when Zoe and Shawn walked in. Bruce and the others were nowhere to be seen; the living room felt strangely empty.
"Looks like we came at a bad time. The place is deserted," Zoe said, glancing around. She turned to Shawn and added, "You might as well head back. This is a family business. I can handle it myself."
Shawn gently took Zoe's hand. "I'm here now. At least let me stay for dinner." He led her to Clara. He greeted. "Mrs. Evans."
Clara glanced mechanically at Shawn but showed no sign of recognition.
Zoe arched an eyebrow. 'Looks like she's lost it from the shock,' she thought.
"Zoe! When did you get back?" Charlie exclaimed as he rushed down the stairs and spotted Zoe with Shawn. "Guys, come quick. Zoe's home."
