"Don't worry. As long as the Evans family doesn't stir up trouble, I won't just stand by and watch," Zoe said. No matter what, they were family. She wasn't truly heartless.
Bruce said, "What if the White family targets us because of this? You should talk to the Ludwigs. Our business has already suffered because of Eunice. How about you have Marlowe Group hand over a project to us?"
Zoe looked at Bruce. "Aren't you afraid Marlowe Group might have another incident and drag the Evans family down with it?"
Bruce scoffed, "Lightning never strikes the same place twice. What are the odds of that happening again?"
"The White family has been targeting Marlowe Group lately. If you really want to take the Evans family business to the next level, why don't you follow Eunice's example and suck up to the Whites? You might just hit the jackpot."
Bruce's face darkened instantly.
Zoe headed upstairs, grabbed only the gift she had bought for Shawn, purposefully left everything else behind, and just as she was about to leave, her five brothers stepped in and barred her path.
Charlie's eyes were welling with tears as he pleaded, "Zoe, please don't go." He truly couldn't bear the thought of her leaving.
Zoe glanced at Charlie and the others. "I'm not dead, so stop looking like you're at a funeral."
Sean asked with concern, "Where are you planning to stay? I have an extra apartment. Why don't you stay there?"
Zoe replied, "No need. I've got a place to stay." Marlowe Group had been facing a lot of trouble lately. Now that she was on the board, she couldn't just stand by.
She planned to stay at Marlowe Group for a while to handle things and teach the short-sighted White family a lesson they wouldn't soon forget.
Zoe returned to the residence Marlowe Group had prepared for her. As soon as she stepped inside, she saw Emmett already waiting. Emmett said, "Ms. Evans, you're finally here. As you requested, the executive video conference will start shortly. Is there anything else you need me to handle?"
"No need. It's just the White family; no point making a big fuss," Zoe said decisively. She'd already decided that teaching them a lesson would suffice.
After all, it was mainly Sophia stirring up trouble. The three White brothers seem decent enough. 'I'll let the White family off this time out of respect for them, but if it happens again, I won't show any mercy,' Zoe thought.
After Emmett left, Zoe's phone rang. Joyce called her. Zoe knew that Joyce wouldn't call her unless it was something serious. She stepped out onto the balcony and answered the call.
Joyce said, "Zoe, I hope I'm not bothering you again. I've heard about what happened. We old-timers were all holed up working on a crucial project at the time; otherwise, we would've stood up for you right away."
"It's okay," Zoe said calmly. "Truth always comes out. I've done nothing wrong, so I've got nothing to fear."
Joyce chuckled heartily. "Exactly. A clear conscience fears no accusation. That's why I admire your straightforward nature. But actually, I called because there's something important we need to discuss."
"Go ahead," Zoe said after a brief pause.
Joyce went on, "We've heard about the opposition to your relationship with Shawn. We do have some influence, but we don't want to meddle too much in youngsters' affairs. Still, we're prepared to give you a chance to prove yourself."
Zoe paused.
"Hey, listen up. Shawn's unit's got an inspection tour coming up soon," Joyce said. "This is a huge chance. If you can knock the top brass' socks off, you'll pretty much be in the clear with Shawn.
