"Boss, I actually think you and Shawn make a great pair," Medusa went on. "He's a legendary warrior, and he treats you really well. Wouldn't it be nice to just be with him?"
"Nice?" Zoe scoffed. "Don't forget why I got close to him in the first place."
"That doesn't matter. You're the only one who still takes that assassination mission seriously," Medusa replied carelessly. "If you've really fallen for him, then just be with him already."
Zoe shot Medusa a fierce glare. She was Firefox, the unyielding queen of mercenaries. She'd made a public declaration to assassinate Shawn—giving it all up for love wasn't her style.
If word got out that she had abandoned the mission because of feelings, she'd become a global joke. That kind of humiliation was something Zoe couldn't afford.
Medusa knew Zoe too well. Zoe never listened to anyone's advice. Unless she could face her own heart honestly, no amount of persuasion would work.
"So, are you going to the reception?" Medusa asked.
"Do I even have a choice?" Zoe replied bitterly. She knew she had to go—even if she wouldn't admit to being Firefox.
Because Shawn was her man. And she wasn't going to let anyone else make a fool out of him.
The Marlowe Group's crisis had temporarily eased after the White family called off their offensive. Other companies that had previously followed the White family's lead in targeting the Marlowe Group also backed off—some even sought the White family's protection, fearing retaliation from Marlowe.
But Zoe had no intention of going after those companies. After all, they formed the backbone of Clusia's economy. If she brought them down recklessly, the economic damage to Clusia would be severe—and that was the last thing she wanted.
What Zoe didn't even realize herself was that, despite once believing she belonged to no country, her stance had quietly changed because of Shawn. Now, anything that might harm Clusia made her hesitate and weigh her options.
Every subtle shift in Zoe's thinking had been carefully observed by Medusa, who had always kept a close eye on her. And at this point, Medusa could only marvel at the power of love—it was enough to change Firefox, the most stubborn mercenary queen.
Zoe entered the office with Medusa and found Emmett already waiting for her.
"Call a senior staff meeting. I want a complete list of all the companies that targeted Marlowe Group," Zoe instructed.
Upon hearing this, Emmett hesitated for a moment. "Are you planning to retaliate against those companies?"
Zoe gave him a cold, cutting look. Emmett instantly shut up, realizing he'd spoken out of turn.
Soon, the company's upper management had all gathered in the conference room, waiting for the chairwoman to arrive. Emmett had already compiled the list Zoe had asked for and placed it at the head of the table.
As soon as Zoe stepped into the room, the murmuring executives fell silent. All eyes turned to her, and not a single one dared speak.
Zoe picked up the list and skimmed it. Twelve companies in total, with the White family's enterprise listed at the top.
"I called you here because I want all the negative impacts from this recent crisis fully dealt with," she said. "Our goal is to ensure the company's operations return to normal—without exception."
The executives exchanged uneasy glances. They were already aware that internal family tensions between Zoe and Eunice had dragged the company into chaos.
By most logic, Zoe should've been fired on the spot. But not only had she kept her position as chairwoman, she was clearly still in full control. It left everyone wondering just how powerful the force backing her truly was.
"Ms. Evans," one of them finally said, "while it's true that most projects are now back on track, the financial losses caused by the previous asset freezes were substantial."
"Exactly. Look, we're just employees—technically we shouldn't complain. But expecting us to get the company fully back on its feet in such a short time? That's a tall order."
