Zoe knew the whole family had been wanting to speak up for Eunice these past few days. But none of them had. Probably because they were too ashamed to bring it up.
Clara loved Eunice too much—otherwise she wouldn't have had the nerve to stop Zoe now.
"Zoe, can we talk?" Clara looked at her, a bit of pleading in her eyes.
Zoe didn't say anything, but she also didn't walk away. That counted as a silent yes.
Seeing a chance, Clara jumped right in. "Zoe, I'm sorry. We're all sorry. I want to apologize to you for everything."
Zoe stayed quiet. She felt like Clara's intro was dragging on too long.
Clara started to feel nervous. She wasn't sure if Zoe accepted her kindness or not.
After a while, when Zoe still didn't leave, Clara gathered her courage and got to the point.
"I know what happened hurt you deeply, but Eunice really regrets it," she said. "She's your twin sister. Can't you forgive her?"
Zoe didn't respond, but her face turned colder.
Clara bit her lip. She knew her apology wasn't enough. So she lowered her head in front of Zoe. "I'm apologizing for Eunice. I'll do anything—just please forgive her, okay?
"You weren't really hurt in the end. Yes, she made a mistake, but nothing happened that can't be fixed. Can't you just let it go? You're family."
"You're so capable—if you speak up, I'm sure you can get Eunice out of prison."
Zoe felt a wave of sadness. Clara only talked about Eunice. She never once thought that if Zoe hadn't been so strong, she might've been killed by now.
There was no way Zoe could forgive someone like Eunice.
Clara was about to say more, but Zoe cut her off. "That's enough. I'll never forgive her."
Seeing that Zoe didn't even try to save her pride, Clara got mad. She liked Zoe even less now. But for her precious Eunice, she had to keep pretending to be pitiful.
Clara suddenly grabbed Zoe's leg and begged through tears, "Zoe, I'm begging you. Please have mercy on your sister.
"I promise, if she gets out, I'll send her far away—so far you'll never have to see her again."
Zoe was speechless. The way Clara said it made it sound like Eunice was the victim, like Zoe was the one being unreasonable. That made her even less willing to forgive.
"Let go of me. I still have to clean up the mess Eunice left behind." Zoe pulled Clara off and moved her aside.
Clara wasn't as strong as Zoe, but she was quick.
Before Zoe could leave, she ran to block the door and yelled, "I knew it! You're heartless and ungrateful. We should've never brought you home. Then at least our family wouldn't be so messed up now."
Zoe's face darkened.
But Clara wasn't done. "You think you're all that? Just because you have powerful friends?
"Let me tell you—someone like you who turns her back on family, who won't even help her own sister, will be hated and left behind. I can't wait to see you crash and burn."
Zoe didn't expect Clara to say so much.
"Is that so? Then just wait and see." She pushed Clara aside, opened the door, and walked out.
Emmett was already waiting outside the house.
Clara couldn't hold back her anger. She ran out and shouted, "What are you so proud of? You only got this far because you're Shawn's girlfriend.
"If he ever finds out how cold and heartless you really are, I bet he'll dump you. Someone like you will never find true love. You'll die alone. No one will ever love you."
Zoe didn't even look back. She got in the car and let Clara yell all she wanted.
Emmett was shaken. If he hadn't known Clara was Zoe's mother, he would've thought they were mortal enemies. He had never seen a mom curse her daughter like that.
"Ms. Evans, are you okay?" Emmett asked gently.
"You talk too much," Zoe said. "Are they all at the company?"
"Yes," Emmett answered. "They're already there—just waiting for you to show up."
Zoe closed her eyes, as if she were just resting for a moment.
Trying to cheer her up, Emmett said, "The executives did exactly what you ordered. They've already recovered about eighty percent of the company's losses. They all admire you now—like, seriously."
Zoe frowned. "Shouldn't it be a hundred percent?"
"Some people still didn't fully listen... they pretended to go along, but..." Emmett's voice trailed off.
Zoe let out a cold laugh. She knew those people couldn't stay.
"Don't worry. I know what to do," Emmett said.
The car pulled up in front of Marlowe Group. Before Emmett could escort Zoe inside, the executives were already lined up at the entrance, waiting to greet her.
"Good morning, Ms. Evans!" they called out, voices full of energy and admiration.
Zoe's skills had completely changed how they saw her—and showed them they had seriously underestimated her.
But Zoe didn't care about fake shows of respect. She walked straight into the meeting room.
The executives stood in place, not daring to sit. Even after Zoe sat down, they stayed standing.
Emmett's face was full of pride. He always knew these people would end up being humbled by Zoe, whom he admired.
Zoe got straight to the point. "Emmett is still in charge of the company's daily affairs. I only have one thing to say."
Everyone leaned in, listening carefully.
"Those who didn't follow my orders, go to HR and resign," she said flatly.
"Ms. Evans, please give me another chance."
"Ms. Evans, we are so sorry."
"Ms. Evans, don't do this."
Those few executives had tried to show off, but instead made things worse for the company. The losses they caused were huge—and they were fully responsible. It could ruin them financially.
Now that things had come to this, of course they panicked and begged Zoe for mercy.
But Zoe simply said, "You had one chance. You missed it. Don't blame anyone else."
"You heard her, didn't you? Get out! Or should I call security to drag you out?" Emmett snapped coldly.
If he wasn't worried about keeping a professional image, he would've punched those guys himself.
After getting rid of the disloyal executives, Zoe turned to the rest. "Anyone else have a problem with me?"
"No, not at all." Everyone quickly shook their heads.
Since no one objected, the meeting was over. Zoe got up and headed for the door.
Emmett gave the executives a look, signaling them to leave.
Once Zoe was the only one left in the room, Emmett spoke. "Ms. Evans, now that the company's fully back on track, could you maybe give us some direction on our next steps?"
"Finish your current projects first," Zoe replied. "We'll talk about the rest when I come back."
"You're leaving?" Emmett was surprised.
Zoe didn't answer. Just then, her phone rang.
Emmett glanced at the screen. It was a call from Shawn.
Zoe picked up. Shawn's deep voice came through the phone. "I'm downstairs at your company."
